Tea Party History

Tea is best enjoyed with others...

Victorian Tea LadyThe most famous tea party is the Boston Tea party, where tea leaves were brewed at the depths of cold ocean waters, rather than singing high while steaming in the tea kettle.

Before the 19th century, only an early morning breakfast and late dinner existing until Anna, the 7th Duchess of Britain asked for tea and light refreshments one afternoon in 1840. It started a whole new tradition of feasting on a variety of baked sweets while sipping on warm tea and chatting with your favorite guest. This soon developed in both England and the US, where formal tea dances were held as upscale parties to dress your best and showcase your finest china and linens. Some tea parties were held outdoors, with mini games and entertainment provided to make it an all day event.

Dress Elegantly for Tea...

To set an enchanted old-world theme, guests must be properly suited. Women should boast large Victorian hats, dresses, antique jewelry, broaches, and a parasol if possible. A set of lace or light fabric gloves are necessary so that they may be worn to protect hands from the elements while not eating or drinking. To shake hands, the glove is removed from the right hand and placed in the left hand when introductions are made.

Gentlemen wear a frock coat or tailcoat, waistcoat (vest), and either a Top Hat, Derbie, or Bowler. For accessories, men can wear cravats, pocket watch and fob, walking sticks, cuff links, and gloves.

The hostess should remain bareheaded as it is her home, but all lady guests should leave their hats on throughout the entire party to show respect. Men need to remove their top hats off while entering the home, but may keep them on outside.

Tea Sandwiches and Delicate Cookies

Cucumber tea sandwiches are a famous favorite delicacy served with afternoon tea:

Cucumber Tea Sandwich
1 loaf of white bread
2 cucumbers, pared & very thinly sliced
2 pkg. cream cheese, softened

Spread each slice of bread with cream cheese. Place sliced cucumbers on half of the loaf, and prepare into sandwiches. Trim all of the crusts and cut into thin rectangular pieces or triangle wedges.

Add thinly sliced tomatoes to the sandwiches if you like, or you can add smoked salmon strips and thin pieces of avocado to your sandwiches to make them more filling.

These tea party appetizers are delicate and light - perfect for serving with many varieties of tea. Keep your menu simple by providing fewer selections with larger quantities to easily refill the serving dishes without wasting valuable party time.

Bring out the China...

Victorian Teacups

Paper, plastic, and plain glass just won't do...you'll have to dig out the china and start stacking the tea cups in preparation for your lovely tea event. If you prefer a whimsical theme, you can mix and match teacups, however if not you will need to maintain a uniform dish style.

Easy Single Serve

If you don't want to be reheating the kettle all afternoon, or waiting to infuse multiple varieties of tea you can fill multiple beautiful teapots (or a drink dispenser) with just boiling water. Place individual tea bag selections in a large basket for your guests to easily sample multiple teas.

Victorian Garden Tea Party Table Setting

Victorian Tea PartyYou can set the Victorian garden tea party theme for both indoors and outside at the same time, if you prefer. If you have a smaller formal dining space, just extend your party through your deck (dress up the wood by using a large rug underneath tables) and/or backyard to ensure the perfect party setting regardless of weather conditions. If your guests get too hot or it starts to rain, it's easier to move to the already arranged indoor space.

Keep a side or buffet table handy with extra linens and dishes so that the hostess does not need to run back and forth from the kitchen, wasting valuable tea serving time. Extra cups should be placed on saucers and not stacked inside themselves, unless you are going for whimsical appeal. Provide sugar cubes in a dish with mini tongs to serve, or elegant sugar dishes with silver spoons for granulated. Use cloth napkins, don't cheat and use cheap paper disposables. It's worth one little extra load of laundry, really... :)

Teapots should be silver and/or bone china if possible. Keep a few already brewed choices full in the pots at all times, or instead fill them with just hot water, and carry around a basket full of tea bag varieties for a greater selection. If there are many guests on the list, choose 2 or 3 people to help "pour", which is quite an honor for them, traditionally.

Victorian Floral and Garden Design

Victorian Garden Theme

To add the garden appeal to your party, prepare a few fresh arrangements with flowers that were commonly found in Victorian gardens - such as Roses, Morning Glory, Forget-Me-Not, Begonia, Hydrangea, Everlasting Pea, etc.

Fill up a few side planters and pots with Day-Lilies, Petunias, and have a tall trellis of Clematis to fill in empty spaces around the common dining areas.

Use bird ages and garden bird feeders as centerpieces for your tables, by arranging some of your fresh flowers with long vines draping down the sides. For the enchanted evening hours, place tea lights as an accent in your centerpieces as well (battery-operated ones are much safer). Flowery linens, pillows, and drapes will help contain your space and make a full Victorian garden appearance.
