Back in 47 BC, Vienne was the home of a celtic tribe of Gaul named the "Allobroges".
Under Julius Ceasar, Vienne became a Roman colony and a thriving urban center.

After the fall of the Roman empire, Vienne became part of the kingdom of Burgundy. It is during this time that christianity flourished and a great number of churches were built.

In the 9th century, Vienne became the capital of Provence before being overtaken by the roman empire in the 11th century.

The Romain influence in Vienne is very visible with the second biggest Roman theatre of the country, and the outstanding Roman temple of Augustus Livia from the 1rst century BC.
