History & Origin of Aurora Borealis Vintage Jewelry
The Aurora Borealis or "Northern Lights" phenomenon we see in the far northern skies at certain times of the year is noted for its shimmering rainbows of color radiating across the horizon. In the language of costume jewelry, Aurora Borealis refers to a special coating on the surface of glass rhinestones or molded faceted glass beads giving them a shimmering multi-color effect.
In the early 1950s the Daniel Swarovski Company advanced in the development of its crystal production. Through experimentation, stones were coated with wafer-thin particles of metal in a steam vacuum. In 1956, Manfred Swarovski, the founder's grandson perfected the "Aurora Borealis" process. To this day, the company demands its products must be of the highest quality. They are secretive about their processes in order to distinguish themselves from the rest of the market.
Aurora Borealis costume jewelry delighted the women of the 1950's just as it does today. The clear beads would pick up the color of the clothes and reflect rainbows of shimmering color from every facet. I well remember how excited my own mother was to receive her first necklace and earrings from my father. To my six-year-old eyes they were the most brilliant diamonds in the world.
Costume jewelry folk like to shorten the name Aurora Borealis using the letters AB. All vintage AB costume jewelry will have a manufacturing date of 1955 or later.
Guidelines for Buying: When searching for pieces to purchase, look at the seller's reputation and knowledge of vintage costume jewelry. When buying on the net, ask the seller questions about the quality and condition of the findings. Ask about scratching, wear, cracks, breaks, chips, nicks, dulling, darkening or discoloration on the stones. Better pieces will have prongs (prong set) around the stones to hold them securely. Better sellers will offer a return policy.
