Ranked #1,841 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #19,923 overall

To Collect, Gift or Use

Yesteryear's recipes are easy to find, and they are just as delicious today as they were 40 or 80 years ago. You can find vintage cookbooks dating as far back as the roaring twenties on this lens to add to your cookbook collection or for a gift. Also included here are children's vintage cookbooks, old cookbook holders/easels and vintage recipe boxes. More cookbooks will be added here soon, dating back to the 1800's.

A cookbook published the same year as a loved one's birth year, anniversary or other memorable year would make a very thoughtful and nostalgic Christmas or birthday gift. A vintage apron would complement a vintage cookbook very nicely as a gift, and you can find dozens of beautiful old and new aprons on my Vintage Aprons lens.

If you are looking for new cookbooks with old-fashioned recipes, you might want to visit my Retro Cookbooks lens, or if you are interested in kitchen gadgets, dishes or anything else vintage, visit my Retro Loco lens or my Retro Loco!™ online store.

I hope you will enjoy looking at all the wonderful old cookbooks here. Please sign the guest book at the bottom of this page if you have any questions, requests or comments.

Old-Fashioned Recipe for Cream of Tomato Soup

FREE RECIPE!

Eating steamy, hot soup on a cool, autumn evening is one of the coziest things I can think of....don't forget the fire in the fireplace, fuzzy socks on your feet, a good movie, a furry cat curled up next to you on the sofa, a warm blanket and a soft pillow to pass out on afterward!

Ingredients:
1 quart tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon soda
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
1 quart milk
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions:
Stew tomatoes slowly one-half hour then puree the tomatoes. Heat the tomatoes and add the soda. Make a sauce of the butter, flour, and milk. Add seasoning. Mix the sauce with the tomatoes. Serve.

Great idea for a lens. I remember my mother having a box stuffed with recipe cards. They were well read, as they lived on the breakfast bar... but I don't think she ever made a dish using any of them.

My mom used the Searchlight cookbook with the black cover. I finally found one like hers at a yard sale. Ah, nostalgia.
  • CanadaREVIEW Oct 24, 2011 @ 11:04 pm | delete
Fantastic lens! I have recipes from my great-great grandmother that are 120 years old and I have cooked a couple of them! I am so glad you have written this, you have inspired me to post another couple of recipes! I posted one on how to cook bear meat, not like that is common, but it is an old recipe! Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

The Keepsake Cookbook: Gathering Delicious Memories One Recipe at a Time

The Keepsake Cookbook: Gathering Delicious Memories One Recipe at a Time

Amazon Price: $9.62 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

Book Description: A recipe is a snapshot, capturing place, people, and time. In the case of a family's or group's recipes, the written instructions evoke images of celebrations, of family members and friends, of menus and kitchen conversations. And they can come together as an heirloom to be treasured. In The Keepsake Cookbook, cookbook author and storyteller Belinda Hulin provides easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions for collecting both oral and written recipes, as well as photographs and memorabilia-and then for organizing a cookbook and putting it into a format to be used and shared.

In addition, Hulin gives advice on capturing family or group history, gently interviewing relatives and friends, and tapping your own memories in order to enrich the end product. She even includes basic recipe times, tips, and measures to help writers turn casual instructions into fully realized recipes.
