How to Become a Virtual Assistant
Ranked #27,494 in Business & Work, #430,774 overall
What is a Virtual Assistant?
A virtual assistant works independently, providing administrative, technical or even marketing assistance to clients. Many times virtual assistants work from their own home-based offices.
Before you start a virtual assistant business, you want to have several years of administrative office experience under your belt. You can work as an independent contractor and take on long-term jobs for clients to bring in more stable, consistent income. In fact, you may never even meet your clients, since most virtual assistants communicate via phone, fax or internet services.
Consider setting up your own website where potential clients can get information about your company. A well-done website can demonstrate your professionalism and skills, and therefore land you more jobs.
When you meet clients for the first time (in person, over the phone or via email) you want to act professional, complete tasks in a timely manner and follow through on agreements as expected. Sell yourself as the person you would want working for you.
To eliminate lots of unnecessary questions, put together a clear outline of the services you provide, how you work with clients and what your expectations are from the client. Listen to your clients and demonstrate that you are trustworthy and that you will handle their business tasks in a professional manner. Having professional business forms on hand can be an asset to your business and at the same time impress your customers.
As you complete jobs, get customer testimonials. You can use this customer feedback in your company literature and your website to convey to new customers what it is like to do business with you. It's an effective selling tactic.
Virtual Assistant Equipment
What do I Need and Where Do I Get It?
The basics include a computer, fax machine (or online fax capability), printer/scanner/copier, a back up hard drive, phone and high speed internet connection. RingCentral is a low-cost online service where you can get phone and fax services through your computer without having purchase equipment. You'll want software to create word documents, an email program too and software for other services that you decide to provide for your clients.
For my office equipment, computers, tech gadgets and software programs, I shop at CircuitCity.com and TigerDirect.com. I have found that both of these resources consistently have the best prices. In addition to lower prices, I can count on them sending me quality products and giving me fast service - every time.
Tiger Direct also has refurbished products you can get - which can save you a lot of money. I have never had any problems with the refurbished products I have purchased at Tiger Direct.

Virtual Assistant Jobs
Whether you provide your services to large companies, small businesses or individuals - or work on a full-time, part-time or short contract job basis - there are a variety of work options for virtual assistants.According to the Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce, virtual assistants charge between $35 and $70 per hour for their services. If you are unsure of what to charge, check what competitors in your area are charging. If you are just starting out and have limited administrative experience, you may want to price your rates lower. That said, you want to set rates that will allow your business to be profitable.
