Best Vitamins: How do I choose from among the crowd? How do you know which company to trust?

Go into any drug store or mega store looking for vitamins and supplements and you get huge walls full of every kind of supplement you can imagine. From fish oils to snake oils, they have it all! And not just one Fish Oil but 100 different brands! How on earth are you supposed to make a decision? Which one is the best? Which one can you trust?

Making a Decision

With all the many brands of supplements and all the different types of supplements and vitamins out there, it's important to know how to judge a good one. There are several critical questions to ask if you want to make the best decision for your health and money. You should ask some specific questions about the company that makes the product. You should know and understand what ingredients should AND shouldn't be in the products.

5 Top Tips about the Best Vitamins

1. Are the vitamins synthetic or natural? There is a big difference here! Some will try to tell you there is no difference but I beg to differ. Basically, synthetic vitamins are not recognized in your body as food and cannot , therefore, be as easily absorbed. Another negative about synthetics is that since your cells don't recognize them as food they can store them up and become toxic.

Natural supplements, and particularly "whole food", are more easily recognized in your body as food and can be more fully absorbed and used. In other words, natural vitamins are more bioavailable.

2. Are the ingredients only from human food sources? Do they follow natures blueprint? It is important that the ingredients come from what is in the human food chain, not a FAD ingredient that's here today, gone tomorrow. We don't know what certain things will do in our body over a long period. There are many things that are natural but I certainly wouldn't want to eat them! For example, these things are natural but are not for human consumption:
Algae (pond scum)
Pine Bark
Ephedra
Fungus
Coal Tar
And yet, did you know these can be found in vitamins and supplements? Even oils like primrose and flaxseed aren't considered to be part of the human food chain according to the USDA.
I would much rather have things like:

Whole Grains
Fruits and Vegetables
Wild Salmon
Your body knows what to do with these ingredients.

3. Have the products been clinically tested by outside sources? Is the clinical data proving that they work and that they are what they say they are? Anyone can say their product is the best but can they prove it?

4. Are the supplements guaranteed toxin free? For example, coral calcium has lots of heavy metals and toxins. Fish Oils are a hot topic. But did you know that most of them have dangerous amounts of toxins in them? Many of these toxins cause serious side effects.

5. Are the supplements complete? Look for a vitamin or supplement that uses the whole family of nutrients and not just isolated parts. For example, make sure your Vitamin E has all 8 parts. Make sure your protein supplement has all 22 amino acids otherwise it will be difficult for your body to completely digest and absorb it.

Know the Company

Knowing the company behind the products we are putting into our body is important! When you realize that there aren't any labeling laws for herbal supplements and many vitamin supplements, then you realize how risky it is to just blindly trust the company.

Here are some important questions to ask when searching out a reputable supplement company:

1. Does the company have a pharmaceutical license granted by the FDA? This is very important. Having a pharmaceutical license is proof that the products are a very high quality.

2. Does the company have a proven track record with no lawsuit brought against them or been in trouble for any false claims? Believe or not it is hard to find one.

3. Does it have it's own state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities, and manufacturing plants?

4. Does it partner with any major science or medical universities, like Stanford University, training doctors in the area of nutrition and disease prevention?

5. Has the USDA tested their products and found that they will do more than what the company said they will do?

6. Is the company a member of a Global Network of scientists including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention?

7. Are the company's scientists keynote speakers at important scientific conventions like the New York Academy of Science?

The Final Test

Do they actually work for you? This is the final test. Even if you buy something that is touted as the new best thing, as the saying goes, "How's that workin' for ya?"
