How to identify a VoIP fraud company? Hints & Tips

VoIP transit is a high risk business, you often deal with companies, who are established for international activity, provided from the countries with strong government regulation, so, they are all situated in well-known offshore countries like Cyprus, Panama, Belize etc.

The residence of such companies give them possibility not to pay for services, because you will never find the real shareholders and company owners.

The company behavior of such a company is like this:
you ask another company a VoIP terminator or VoIP transit provider to give you the possibility to route the traffic with postpay conditions;
you route 100000 minutes with the price 0.05 when you sell it and with the price 0.048, when you buy it, which totals to 5000 USD of income;
then you don't pay any bill and just close the company.

Your profit is 5000-700 = 4300 USD, because 700 USD is the price for another offshore company, which you open immediately to continue the same activity. In case you pay for the traffic the profit will be less: 100000*(0.05-0.048)=200 USD.

OK. You cannot fight these companies, when they have stolen your traffic or money, but you can protect yourself and I will help you.

The waterproof defend in VoIP is prepaid. If your partner wants to prepay the services, then there will less chances that you will be fooled. But be patient. You should give away that exact amount of services, which was prepaid, not more, otherwise your partner will use more services than they prepaid and just will not pay the difference.

If you cannot sell your services on prepaid basis (and it is really difficult in VoIP), then you need to check somehow a company, which wants to be your partner.

Here comes a short check-list, which was compiled by us at UcallWeconn, How to identify a VoIP fraud company:

Google for a Company Name

1. Try to google a company name, the name of the manager, which has connected with you, his contact details like IM number, mail address, the address of the company. Try to look first 2-3 pages in search engines results pages to see if the company or manager were mentioned somewhere. If never mentioned, then it is a bad sign.

Check VoIP Fraud List

2. Quickly jump to a VoIP forums and fraud-list, try to look for the name of the manger or the company, which have contacted you, there, may be Google doesn't have any info, because they are new, but already fooled somebody.

Send the Tech Form

3. Send the tech form to a partner and ask to fill in. Use the IP-address of the softswitch to know who is a colocation provider. Then you can make 2 things here: either call to a provider and kindly ask for references for their client, who they are, if they pay well, if they are a long-term client etc, or check if your client has his own Autonomous System. In fist case there is less reliability, in the second more, because own AS means, that company has serious business in the Internet.

Check the Website

4. Check a website of the company. It should be not one page sales letter. The more services announced on the website and really provided by the company, the more reliable your future partner, because they have diverse income sources and will not make any fraud to risk their name.

No Public e-mails Policy

5. Be suspicious to those people, who write from yahoo or gmail e-mail address. Often it can mean, that a company even didn't dare to arrange own mail service, so, they don't treat well their presence in the Internet and may be don't plan to stay there for a long time.

The Wish for Bilateral Business

6. Talk with your future partner about routes, they have. Give them some 2-3 routes with price which is higher than market price. If that company still wants to buy it, it should make you attentive and suspicious. The company, which has contacted you should also desire not only to buy from you, but also sell. Looking for new clients and being suspicious to you is a good sign.

NDA

7. Ask for references. Sometimes companies have NDA between each other, so, they don't give references, but NDA itself is a good sign also. Be aware references should be given by well-known long term players, not by offshores.

A Telecom License in the Country of Residence

8. A company, who has a telecom license in their country of residence is a very good sign.

Check the Membership in Organizations, Excahnges, Conferences

9. If you can meet the company representatives on telecom shows or conferences, then it is a good sign. Check the company name in the list of participants of Ancotel's CNX or GTM events.

Premium Traffic Desired

10. The new company is interested in non-refiled traffic, which is called "directs". Directs are often expensive, but always better quality, than black or gray termination.

Physicall Office Available

11. If the company has a physical office, which you can visit and talk with their employees, then it is a good sign. But check 10 times, that the office belongs to this company, that it cannot move in one day, that the company has a good developed infrastructure there, for example their main POP with equipment, channels, VPNs to that location etc.
