Know your measurements!

You will see this over and over again, and it's worth re-iterating...Know your measurements. There are no standards from store to store in plus size clothing. A particular size that fits you at one store may be completely different at another store. It's so important to know this, when ordering on-line. Most stores are very good about adding a size chart to their e-commerce store. If they don't have one, ask them to add it. Making returns because something doesn't fit, is generally easy to do nowadays, but it's still a hassle. Knowing your measurements, will help give you the info you need to make online purchases a little easier. It's also a good idea to know your body shape. Certain styled clothing can look better on different body shapes. But with that said, you can also make an outfit you love, work for you, with the right accessories, right solid/print and tailoring. Dressing your body type is all about balancing out your silhouette.

So you want to be a model?

Tips for becoming a plus size model

So you want to be a model? We think that is wonderful! What we hear a lot is why are the pictures we use full of skinny people? Unless we took our own pictures, which may happen, we use images that are currently available. We're not really sure why some stores use smaller models, is there a lack of plus size models? Perhaps, so why not give it a shot. It is a relatively untapped market and plenty of room for new aspiring models. Companies hire models for many different reasons, not just clothing, you could be called for a job to be an extra in a movie or a model for a print job for your local theatre, for training videos it's darn near limitless...Here are a few tips to becoming a model:

1. For apparel modeling, you are relatively tall (this helps with mainstream clothing, but doesn't matter for petite modeling or non apparel modeling)
2. Balance out your silhouette - Having an hourglass figure may help in getting you apparel jobs, but doesn't really matter for jobs that aren't apparel related.
3. Get a good hair cut with style and the ability to wear your hair in different styles. Medium length to long hair allows for different looks.
4. Work on different make up techniques and looks: from a light fresh faced look to a more dramatic evening look
5. Spend a little money on a good commercial photographer to put together a nice comp card with different looks. A commercial photographer is in the biz of creating photos for ads. There are commerical photographers who only photograph products, so you will want to find one that photographs models for ads. You can find listings of commercial photographers in your local business to business yellow pages. They are generally not listed in the regular yellow pages.
6. For your comp cards, update your wardrobe. If you like sexy, it's wise to also have conservative looks too. The more looks you can give, the better. As it gives you more opportunity for different modeling jobs. If you just do "sexy" you may miss out on more modeling jobs, as it can be hard for an agent to look beyond the "sexy" look and may wonder if you can even look conservative. There are a lot more modeling jobs out there for conservative or upscale look, versus just sexy. Unless of course, you only want to model lingerie.
7. Work on expressions. Get in front of a mirror and work on different expressions. Work on that "Blue Steel", as well as a spontaneous surprised happy look. As a model, you will need to pose yourself in front of the camera. This is a sure sign of a novice if you cannot pose yourself. Some photographers may help some and give direction, but they want you to feel comfortable in front of a camera as it looks more natural.
8. For your comp card, you will want several "looks" a good conservative head shot, a "soccer mom" look if you're old enough, an elegant upscale evening look, a body shot in a bathing suit or lingerie, and one that is anything goes. If you're a funny person, create a shot that is hilarious. If you're a little more conservative, do a complete goth look. Make sure your facial expressions match the look you are going for. If you have good hands or beautiful eyes, have the photographer play up these assets. It's also nice if the photographer has propped sets. This helps to make your images look more like an ad. For example, create a morning shot of you, drinking your morning java, reading a newspaper and in a business suit at the kitchen table...
9. Once you have your comp cards professionally printed, send them to every agency possible, including out of state agencies. And also to companies that have their own in house photography studios. Companies out of state, who find the "perfect model" for them will fly you out and pay for expenses. Call the agencies a few days later to make sure they received the comp card. There are also online agencies where you can upload your photos, but it is wise to have an agent to handle monetary aspects of the modeling jobs and will work on your behalf. If you're good, an agency will put your picture in front of many companies as they make money when you get jobs.
10. Auditions and model calls - generally you won't get your job right out of the gate, but it can happen, you will most likely get a call to audition, get as much information you can about the audition, what the company is looking for, what you should wear, etc If you do not have the wardrobe, go out and buy it. Modeling can get a bit expensive but being prepared can be lucrative if you get the job. If the job is about women on safari, showing up in a dress and high heels, could limit your chances of landing the job.
11. After the audition, make sure to write a thank you card to the agency as well as the contact person at the company the ad(s) is for, if you can get that information. Always be genuine and kind, when starting out. Well, beyond also. Sometimes, photographers are allowed to choose the model, and if they remember someone is hard to work with, they will not hire them again. It's always good to be nice to the photographer.
12. Paying your dues - Agencies will hire models to be product demonstrators, hostesses at parties, etc, and sometimes these do not pay anything or pay very little, but they are still worth accepting a few of these jobs, to keep your name and pictures in the forefront of your agency.
13. Lastly, be patient and don't get discouraged. It can take time, but it's fun, you can make a little extra spending money and you will meet lots of interesting people.
