Your Voice

...your fortune in educational marketing.

I'm making this page about voice broadcasting because there's a segment of the population that still picks up the telephone...email can get to be too much! My younger daughter typically has 300 unread emails. She tells me that none of her friends use the telephone. It's become a last resort. However, baby boomers and traditionalists use the telephone. Seems to me we are digital immigrants. That being said, not everyone is a teacher; certainly not my daughter...she takes a "sink or swim" attitude towards my efforts. Why then does she not know a larger digital picture I am piecing together? Let's just say boomers can be relentless. But without the older generation and the youth, I'd say the rich connectivity is just not there. So I'm all for inter-generational alliances.

She may not care about the telephone, after all, she has her cell phone to text with...but teenagers are on overload, too. They, too, go along the same rails day after day. It's just that when there's the excitement of discovery the enticement from friends is just too intense to ignore. And isn't that what we're all doing? Cutting out this distraction to concentrate on that one? So take heart...the younger generation doesn't have the two things I feel are necessary for education marketing:

experience / story telling
patience to educate

And you do :)

So find your voice and align with a movement, local or international, you can find your core group.

The 7 Great Lies of Networkmarketing

Educational marketing, to those who can relate to the help needed...just means, narrow down your audience. The truth is: you know too much, and there's way too many buyers. Does that sound counter intuitive? It is when you realize the kind of people that would befriend you are those you have something in common with. Gone are the days that I made friends because we chewed the same kind of gum!

I've just realized that knowledge of personality colours, training my volunteers in reception, as well as training multi-barrier-to-employment clients in life skills will help me out in being my own boss. Even my constant exposure to multiple cultures (especially Chinese) will stand me in good stead. Just being in a training institute made me realize it's all about life-long learning, and putting it into practice with guidance.

Isn't it true that when you have a core group of friends, more opens up to you? And the more interests, the more friends...but what is the success principle: mastering a skill or diversification in many areas? My teacher, Ann Sieg, tells us to concentrate on core ideas...this report doesn't cost anything click here for Ann's voice.

The reason I work from home is to be there for my daughter when she gets home from school. A sign of the times: commuting. Fine, if you like distances and rush hour traffic, and the necessary expense of driving a car. Potentially, you could listen to tapes...but how safe is driving when you're on automatic pilot? Anyways, I've taken the bus to work, and if you've ever done that you know that it's a love/hate relationship...I'm early and it took off, I'm late and it picked me up! and the endless combinations.

My daily routine

These tasks vary: get myself in order, eat breakfast, read paper, do a neck traction exercise. Wake up my computer. (Permit me, without calling me a hack, to mix what I have been doing with what I am doing with what I will be doing shortly...)

The reason I've been doing traction with a wedge: it has come to my attention that lots of people lose the "C" in their neck. Now I'm thinking I do a lot of computer work, but maybe the real reason is my pillow. That and most people are chronically dehydrated, and why should I think I'm any different? I read in this book called The Water Cure that this older lady regained 30% of her bone mass from deciding to rehydrate and keep hydrated. Don't you think that's amazing!! So, I was looking at my daughter, the way she sleeps on her back and the traditional pillow...and it didn't look right. Maybe it is correct to have a tube pillow. I mention it for your sakes, because to have your own business is going to be stressful (I call it a good kind of stress) for the first years according to my Business 101 book. If your neck has a natural "C" then your top half is talking to your bottom half and all is well.

Job search, dive into email. Look at the top newsfeed. Figure out what absolutely must be done today, besides taking a weekly trip to the chiropractor or sometimes out for a coffee. Look at some Tweets. Review or look at some new marketing skill in my spare time, be available to work at all times. Blog if I'm excited.

I use some method of detox, too, most days. I learned this stuff from my friend, Ellen. That's because of an even earlier interest in health.

What I hope to be doing is attending some classes on business skills of all kinds, taxation, file management, networking with established business people in my area.

My tips for keeping a good work-life balance from home

The Introvert vs The Extrovert

Big embarrassed grin :)) I haven't found the balance! I was more balanced when I was a stay-at-home Mum: at least I walked the kids to school and back. Oh, I remember those 18-hour days . If I'm any different after 16 years of that, plus 11 years of working in an office I cannot tell. I sleep better now, though.

Walking as much as possible instead of getting a ride, and "fleeing" from the intensity of what I am learning is my way of keeping sane. Even washing the dishes or, very rarely, taking a nap. I very much like to change my routine as much as possible.

All my life I've been varying my routine to see what works, gathering information, testing and then keeping what is best, and although painful, tossing out what isn't. It's harder for me to throw things out, whether objects or habits, but it simply must be done to make room for the new.

Is there a network that can keep you moving? I have a friend that trades off some of my baking and cooking with doing my laundry and driving me places...actually she does it for free, I just like to get her to try the stuff I make to hone my cooking skills. This same friend loves the idea of circulating things and takes my old good junk for others, or for storage. Another friend takes me to church and I give her a sympathetic ear for her overactive life, and she gets me out to parties. My other friend takes me to her church if I missed my first ride, and to hear motivational speakers, and I help her out with random acts of kindness. Still another friend reminds me of the marginalized in our society and I let her blow off steam a bit, sometimes her turn of phrase is hysterical :))

When I can I go hiking with my waterfall group...I'm meeting local people and celebrities. City of Waterfalls and here's me (as well as others) in an interview about our pastime Hamilton Waterfall Group Walk January 31 2009

I recommend going out to eat on occasion whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner. Because working at home means living and working in the same space. Alternate between quick eating and cooking from scratch when eating at home.

One thing I need is a walking buddy. That's definitely next :)

You know what else I do? I actually go into work and volunteer once a week. It reminds me why I want out, keeps me current, builds bridges, and I may need them in the near future. That is, I believe it will take me awhile to create content on the internet. I'm thinking I may need to go back to work one more time as I'm transferring to full-time at-home work. Actually, just as frantically as they're trying to get me back into work, I am working quietly behind the scenes to finally be free of it. The office dance: I can still do it, but do the math! It's a good place to start, but did you know that the entire school system pushes it as "the right thing to do", when only 5% of people who retire actually have enough to live on?

And if you're embarrassed, you're in good company. Fear you'll be lead down the garden path? Umm...I'm afraid that already happened for a good many of us. I really want to run around screaming "Five per cent! Five per cent! That's not right!!" but I'm an introvert...I consider, research, plan, do.

Actually, I'll be writing a report on the bridge between extroverts and introverts because I believe whole heartedly that it is needed. It might be the odd couple, and introverts only comprise 30 per cent of the population but we must find our voice, and we need extroverts to help promote us for the sake of an integrated society. Thank goodness that the internet lends itself quite well to the introvert, but don't hide all the time! Got to work smarter, you know ;)

My Blog

Business Journal

I started this blog late last year...writing my own blog makes me want to read others'. It's a peek into another life, a world view. I would characterize my own blog as a chick pecking its way out of its shell...gosh, you just have to watch it emerge! I have failed at marketing. My first impression of marketing is that my teacher in grade 12 had a heart attack and landed in the hospital! Not good :( As the years went by sales just seemed to find me: my Avon rep gave up her route when she moved, gave it to me. Let's see, Tupperware, Mary Kay, Quixtar...but I did not have a car...yet there was something I learned in each one. Now that I look back I must have been bitten by the bug.

Working four months in a call center selling lottery tickets to Brits, Kiwis, Australians, United Arab Empirates in the middle of the night was an eye-opener...in-house training was good. Actually, the way I got in...well, I had some inside information and showed up at orienteering (was not on the list) but they added me! I sat by one of the star performers and one day I made her leave work and go straight to the doctor. The next day she said if she hadn't gone in she would have died from blood poisoning! I was at that job for 4 months sitting next to a young Australian from Melborne on a 'walk about'. He said I had a nice accent ;) Next, I used my voice in another call center for two days, but landed a permanent job in reception (Program Assistant / Volunteer Co-ordinator) in a training institution.

Years and years later I moved, then my temporary contract was over, my household was set up, my new computer was up and running...it was then that I found myself clicking that fateful ad word. That one click led me to this blog (one click at a time).

Be on top with 2 or 3 MLM businesses

Self management, is interwoven into everyone's life. I could go back to work and line the pockets of...well, I worked in non-profit so really it goes back into your pocket. Comes out of different levels of government. I cared about matching job seekers with employers, but "The Corporation" (anybody seen that video?) kept haunting me. Start your wealth this way, by all means, but be stuck there forever? No way! Maybe the sense of urgency was good to get me going, but I remember doing work that could have been streamlined. Were the employees really using critical thinking abilities? After so many years of working under direction am I able to decide absolutely everything in my home biz?

It would seem during this transition period that I am realizing that nothing compares to raising children. If you've raised children, you've been in charge, you've rallied the troops, you've made the decisions. Not only have you garnered support, but they love you! I would say you've been pretty much a Commander-in-Chief, especially if you're divorced and a single Mom. By God, what enemy have you not faced, what set back have you not seen turned to your advantage? Protecting them, teaching them, bringing them along, seeing them make their own friends (read: joint ventures)...you see what I mean? You've already been doing it, and you know it. Now, those skills are what we call in the employment industry: transferable skills. And I don't know about you, but by and large it's been fun :)

My agency, boss, paycheque could get me going in the morning, and to sleep at a reasonable time. It even made me friends. But I want to get myself going. What is it about time management is elusive to me? I'm talking about just getting up from the computer and getting out...we've had some awesome days and I'm still inside! Or just getting back to the computer (after all it's beautiful out). It all depends on if I get to bed on time. The turning point...is it the "more than I made at my job" milestone? Or is it taking back what was stolen from me? I think it's called autonomy.

"Relentless" is a wild thing that must be tamed. My answer is that writing it down gets it out for a good look see. It actually is the first step to it happening.
