Voyageurs National Park is The Largest Water Park in Minnesota

Are you looking for a great vacation place this summer? Voyageurs National Park (VNP) is located in Northern Minnesota, St Louis County in the United States of America. I remember it very well when the national park was signed into law on January 8, 1971. I grew up at Kabetogama Lake which is the gateway to VNP and is one of three largest lakes that make up the water park. The Kabetogama Peninsula is the central part, with hundreds of islands thhat make up the wilderness northwoods water park.

This sunset picture is at Kabetogama Lake at Woodenfrog Campground.

Voyageurs National Park is 218,055 acres in size and 38% is fresh water lakes. VNP has some of the oldest exposed pink and gray granite rocks in the world, and towering trees.

On April 8, 1975, Voyageurs National Park was authorized as the nation's 36th national park. The park and its partners are remembering those years and celebrating the future with 35 special activities for the public and are for all ages to experience Voyageurs National Park.

The DNR has sold over 565,000 fishing licenses this season already (June 6th) in Minnesota. The fishing reports have been good and the weather has been unusually warmer, which might account for the soaring sales. That's a 13% increase over the past 10 years.

Voyageurs National Park

Twin Cities Public Television show (see video) Minnesota's National Park Legacy aired in October 2009. The legacies of Minnesota's National Park sites takes a look at Voyageurs National Park and Grand Portage National Monument. The film's producer is Steve Spencer. The landscape is rugged and varied with rolling hills and bogs, swamps, beaver ponds, a variety of lakes, and islands. Voyageurs National Park has some of the oldest pink and gray rock formations in the world that were carved and shaped by at least four glaciers leaving four large interconnected lakes. It is called the Border Waters, God's Country, and "home" to fortunate souls.

Ferns in the wilderness forest Pictures, Images and Photos

Over one third of Voyageurs is water, so the park really does need to be accessed by water to see and enjoy. Access to the Kabetogama Peninsula, islands and the park's shorelines is by water. On the northern and eastern edge of the Minnesota's border there are 55 miles of park along the Ontario border of Canada.

Canoeing and Kayaking - The lakes of VNP are large enough to provide some solitude. Canoe and kayak trips are available through outfitters. There are day-trips to journeys that last over a week. The Kabetogama Peninsula can be navigated in about one week.

Boats on Interior Lakes - VNP provides canoes and or rowboats for $10 a day on these following interior lakes of the Kabetogama Peninsula: Shoepack, Little Shoepack, Locator, Quill, Ek, Cruiser, Peary and Brown. Boats are available by reservations made one week ahead by phone or by at the Visitor Centers. The trails leading to the interior lakes are accessible by water. Privately owned outfitters and resorts can provide for water taxi services.

Camping - Water accessible campsites are distributed throughout the park for tent camping or for houseboats. Tent sites have a fire ring, outhouse, a bear proof storage locker, a mooring aid, picnic table, and a tent pad or level area. The Houseboat sites have two mooring aids and a fire ring. No Fees or Reservations but self-reservation permits are required for overnight stays. The sites are available on a first come basis. - The park charges $35 a night for group campsites for up to 30 people.

Fishing and Boating - Boating and fishing ate the most popular recreational use of the park. VNP park is famous for some of the best Walleye and Bass water in the nation. Sport anglers have been attracted here long before in became a park. A Minnesota fishing license is required and boating regulations apply.

Boat Tour Schedule - Available on the park's website.

Lodging Facilities - Often called the "Jewel in the Wilderness" is the historic 1910 Kettle Falls Hotel and Dam. The hotel offers lodging within the park, dinning and bar, trading post, rooms and modern housekeeping villas. Kettle Falls is accessible by float-plane and boat. Portage at the dam allows for access between Namakan and Rainy lakes in the warm season. It was once a transient community of over 200 people including fish buyers, lumberjacks, prospectors, bootleggers, and tourists.

Hiking, Skiing and Snowshoeing - The park has a variety of hiking trails that are accessible by car or boat. There are two long distance trail systems and near each visitor center there is a hiking trail. The park keeps trails groomed, two for skiing and three for snowshoeing.

Snowmobiling - Ice Fishing - VNP has 110 miles of groomed snowmobile trails over the frozen lake surfaces. The Chain of Lakes Trail is 11 miles long and goes through the beautiful interior of the park, it is not groomed.

Winter Spring Summer Fall

Just thought I would alert all those planning their dream vacation trip to Kabetogama/Voyaguers National Park--BRING MOSQUITO REPELLENT! The northland can have ideal conditions for mosquito breeding--they like standing water, so dump any containers outside after it rains to prevent hatching. I've found that repellent with DEET is the most effective but it's use is a bit contorversial--use it sparingly , preferably on clothing rather than the skin. Be sure to bring long sleeved shirts, long pants, light jackets, etc. Pray for a good breeze to keep the pests away. Enjoy the camp fire, mosquitos don't care for smoke. During the day, most of the problems with mosquitos is in the shade. Why am I sharing this? Well last evening I went for a walk in the northland wearing shorts and a tank top and almost turned back before I got out of the yard. I was essentially mosquito bait, and thought it would be better once I got on the back road--nope! I spent a half hour swatting, trying not to breathe as I've heard mosquitos are attracted to our exhaled carbon dioxide--well that didn't work so well. Yup, that will be me walking again tonight--the pleasures of being in this natural beauty far out weigh the little inconveniences

The park is named for the French Canadian Voyageurs who traveled these waters in birchbark canoes from the Great Lakes into the interior of the western United States and Canada. Voyageurs has its national significance because of the water and beautiful scenery, geology, its natural resources and rich culture. I feel assured that Voyageurs will always be protected for future generations to enjoy.

Very pretty place. I do question the sanity of the people who jump off those cliffs into the water, though... that water has to be way to cold for comfortable swimming! (I wouldn't like jumping into icy water.)

I had one of those "what a small little world" experiences yesterday when I was having my hair done, a lady who also worked at the Census Bureau can to have hers done b the same stylist. Now you are wondering, "Now what does thei have to do with Voyaguers National Park?" I could read your thought bubble. Well, I'll tell you--she and her husband are right at this moment on there way to Voyaguers National Park for a house boat vacation. She was really looking forward to the adventure based on their research and reports from friends. I told her to be sure to bring mosquito repellent and mosquito netting if she has any. As it turns out she does have one of those hats that nets the whole head.

Sounds like one of those appointments that's just supposed to happen when it did. Its a good thing you told her about the mosquitoes being bad. I'm not too sure they would be a problem out on a house-boat, but I'm sure they will adventure on islands and land too. Hope you both like the new hair-doos.

So, Voyaguers National Park has been in existence for 35 years now. I have been remembering some of controversy of that time. Many people were affected in loosing their cabins on islands and there was a lot of hard feelings that went with it. One guy with property on Rainy Lake even decided to fight back by cutting the trees on the island in protest of the condemnation formalizing emminent domain. Change was going to happen and over the years, most folks have come to peace with it. Many locals work for the park and get to be a part of preserving "God's country". It surly is the land of the beautiful!
I just read that the 35th year is being celebrated with a new tour boat, the "Voyaguer" which will operate on Rainy Lake. Usage will be a bit pricey with a trip to Kettle Falls being slated to cost $50 for adults and $25 for children. This is a water park and one needs a boat to get around and the tour boat experience is a piece that has been missing.
