Voyageurs National Park is My Favorite Place
Twin Cities Public Television show video "Minnesota's National Park Legacy" is airing in October 2009. The legacies of Minnesota's National Park sites takes a look at Voyageurs National Park and Grand Portage National Monument. The film's producer is Steve Spencer. The landscape is rugged and varied with rolling hills and bogs, swamps, beaver ponds, a variety of lakes, and islands. Voyageurs National Park has some of the oldest pink and gray rock formations in the world that were carved and shaped by at least four glaciers leaving four large interconnected lakes. It is called the Borderwaters.
Voyageurs National Park (VNP) is in Northern Minnesota, St Louis County in the United States of America. I remember it very well when the national park was signed into law on January 8, 1971. I grew up at Kabetogama Lake which is the gateway to VNP and is one of three major lakes that make up the water park. The Kabetogama Peninsula and hundreds of islands make up the wilderness northwoods in the park. Things To Do in Voyageurs
Over one third of Voyageurs is water, so the park really does need to be accessed by water to see and enjoy. Access to the Kabetogama Peninsula, islands and the park's shorelines is by water. On the northern and eastern edge of the Minnesota's border there are 55 miles of park along the Ontario border of Canada.
Canoeing and Kayaking - The lakes of VNP are large enough to provide some solitude. Canoe and kayak trips are available through outfitters. There are day-trips to journeys that last over a week. The Kabetogama Peninsula can be navigated in about one week.
Boats on Interior Lakes - VNP provides canoes and or rowboats for $10 a day on these following interior lakes of the Kabetogama Peninsula: Shoepack, Little Shoepack, Locator, Quill, Ek, Cruiser, Peary and Brown. Boats are available by reservations made one week ahead by phone or by at the Visitor Centers. The trails leading to the interior lakes are accessible by water. Privately owned outfitters and resorts can provide for water taxi services.
Camping - Water accessible campsites are distributed throughout the park for tent camping or for houseboats. Tent sites have a fire ring, outhouse, a bear proof storage locker, a mooring aid, picnic table, and a tent pad or level area. The Houseboat sites have two mooring aids and a fire ring. No Fees or Reservations but self-reservation permits are required for overnight stays. The sites are available on a first come basis. - The park charges $35 a night for group campsites for up to 30 people.

Fishing and Boating - Boating and fishing ate the most popular recreational use of the park. VNP park is famous for some of the best Walleye and Bass water in the nation. Sport anglers have been attracted here long before in became a park. A Minnesota fishing license is required and boating regulations apply.
Boat Tour Schedule - Available on the park's website.
Lodging Facilities - Often called the "Jewel in the Wilderness" is the historic 1910 Kettle Falls Hotel and Dam. The hotel offers lodging within the park, dinning and bar, trading post, rooms and modern housekeeping villas. Kettle Falls is accessible by float-plane and boat. Portage at the dam allows for access between Namakan and Rainy lakes in the warm season. It was once a transient community of over 200 people including fish buyers, lumberjacks, prospectors, bootleggers, and tourists.
Hiking, Skiing and Snowshoeing - The park has a variety of hiking trails that are accessible by car or boat. There are two long distance trail systems and near each visitor center there is a hiking trail. The park keeps trails groomed, two for skiing and three for snowshoeing.
Snowmobiling - VNP has 110 miles of groomed snowmobile trails over the frozen lake surfaces. The Chain of Lakes Trail is 11 miles long and goes through the beautiful interior of the park, it is not groomed.- * Voyageurs National Park MAP

Product Description
When President Nixon signed the legislation authorizing the establishment of Voyageurs National Park on January 8, 1971, almost eighty years had passed since Minnesota's government initially petitioned to create a national park in the northern portion of the state.
Voyageurs National Park chronicles the complex legal and political campaign to found Minnesota's only national park. Witzig's thoroughly documented and referenced research allows him to offer a detailed view of the unanticipated disappointments and defining moments of achievement that accompanied this complicated legislative battle. Concentrating on the period from 1962 to 1975, Witzig identifies and explains the central issues surrounding the campaign including land acquisition policy, local concerns and opposition to the park, interagency conflict over inclusion of U.S. forest lands, antifederal attitudes in northeastern Minnesota, and the overstated case for the economic benefits a national park would bring. Witzig covers of the dispute over the inclusion of Crane Lake in the park and focuses on the many individuals and groups who were instrumental in the establishment of Voyageurs National Park, such as Governor Elmer L. Andersen, John A. Blatnik, Sigurd F. Olson, and Rita Shemesh.

The park is named for the French Canadian Voyageurs who traveled these waters in birchbark canoes from the Great Lakes into the interior of the western United States and Canada. Voyageurs has its national significance because of the water and beautiful scenery, geology, its natural resources and rich culture. I feel assured that Voyageurs will always be protected for future generations to enjoy.

- We had a great time in VNP. We weren't there very long (most of our time was spent canoe-camping in the Boundary Waters), but we enjoyed a night of camping at Woodenfrog State Campground, then two days of canoeing with a night spent on one of the many islands on Lake Kabetagoma and lunch at Ellsworth Rock Gardens, where a very bold deer was hanging around. Though bear can swim, none visited us on our little island getaway.
