The Wheel Of Fortune

Ranked #46,047 in Culture & Society, #1,051,060 overall

Changing Fortunes

There are three common associations with this card: fortune, referring to the goddess Fortuna, and whether or not she looks kindly on us; destiny, in the sense that our fate is largely pre-destined; and change which refers to the changes that come with repeating cycles such as the seasons in nature or the planetary cycles in the solar system. Most people like the name of the card "Fortune" because it is associated with the idea that something good or desired is coming, but this was not the way it was regarded in medieval times.

The Wheel of Fortune turns
I go down, demeaned;
another is raised up;
far too proud
sits the king at the summit --
let him fear ruin!
for under the axis we read
about Queen Hecuba

These lines from the 13th-century Carmina Burana capture an irony and fatalism that was no doubt strong in the medieval view of the world. Fortuna, the fickle and capricious goddess of luck, was no benign benefactress, but rather a reminder of the powerlessness of human beings at the hands of fate. The Wheel is almost a medieval torture instrument, to which we are strapped, forced to endure the humbling roller-coaster ride of life.

The Hermitage

In the modern view this card is regarded as signaling change, usually a change for the better. The planet associated with it is Jupiter, planet of expansion, abundance and good fortune. It can also represent sychronicity and events that move in "sync" with each other to produce a desired result.

The Cosmic Tarot

Changing Cycles

type=textIn the Cosmic Tarot the various interwoven cycles operating in life are highlighted, and the idea that acceptance of change and knowledge of these cycles is the most positive way of dealing with issues of fate and destiny. The card displays a wheel which is turned by "the machinery of the universe," and has the symbols of the zodiacal signs around the rim, superimposed on a diagram which shows the planetary symbols displayed as they are arranged on the Kabbalistic Tree Of Life.

"The wheels within wheels pictured on the Wheel of Fortune relate to interwoven astrological influences and kabbalistic symbols as they reflect the changing cycles in our lives. The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that fate, destiny, and luck are factors that affect us all and that our inner cycles are moving us constantly toward growth. Astrology, numerology, and biorhythms put us in touch with the shifting experiences and lessons our Soul is seeking. Recognizing and accepting the inevitability of the "ups and downs" of life in one of the key ideas symbolized by the Wheel of Fortune. Chance often has a greater impact on us that causality when we encounter synchronistic events that put us in touch with the "hand of the universe" in our lives." The Robin Wood Tarot

Roller Coaster Ride

type=textRobin Wood illustrates the inner changes of mood and the changes of fortune that we all experience at various times in our lives, ranging from ecstasy to despair and all the states in between.

"This card shows a roulette wheel. It's divided into eight sections, and on each section is the face of a young woman. At the top of the wheel, she is ecstatic. At the bottom, despairing. Between, the colors change according to the spectrum, and her moods change, too. The wheel has a golden rim, with a silver ball in motion around it.

Key - Roller Coaster Ride

This card means change, and the inevitability of change. It's the card of destiny, fortune, luck, perhaps the end of troubles in sight. Moving on, for better or worse. Emotional upheaval. The Robin Wood Tarot: The Book Robin Wood

The Gilded Tarot

type=textHere the larger planetary cycles are also represented. Change, which is not personal but does affect us personally, is depicted by a wheel which is turned mechanically. The signs of the zodiac are displayed, and the Sun, symbol of the heart rests at the center of the wheel. This guides us to recognize that the center of the wheel is still and unchanging and that "events in life are often good or bad simply because you choose to view them as such. Keep your center and your focus and don't be rattled by events you cannot control."

"Sometimes viewed as Fate, this wheel frightens most of us because its turning is beyond our control. Here we have a fully mechanized wheel that is, as indicated by the astrological symbols on it, controlled by the stars, the rhythms of nature and life. Sometimes things happen in our lives that seem inexplicable, but life is full of cycles and we would do well to remember that. The sun at the center of the wheel can represent our mind. If we are centered and secure, then no matter how the wheel turns, we are not at its mercy. We can view something however we like - as a blessing or curse, a tragedy or an opportunity." The Hanson Roberts Tarot

Change

type=textIn the Hanson-Roberts card the emphasis is on change and the positive way to handle it. As is pointed out, even a low cycle can be turned into a prosperous result, if one recognizes it and works in harmony with the cycle.

"The wheel is spinning forward, building our fortunes steadily up to a peak, then sending us humbly back down. The only certainty is change. The opportunity is present to prosper, in bad cycles as well as good, if one can ride the Wheel of Fortune with grace, in harmony with the workings of fate. Topping the Wheel is the head of the Sphinx, the Egyptian icon that gave riddles which, when solved, would answer complex questions simply. A Divine Plan is referred to within the wheel by the Hebrew letters of the Tetragrammaton and the letters T, A, R, O. There is freedom for the individual to make choices in life, but they are within the confines of one's fate and destiny. Clockwise in the four corners of the card are an angel, a bird, a lion, and a bull. They have been associated with the four mystical creatures in the bible (Ezekiel 1:10, Revelation 4:7), the four elements, the four Christian gospels, and the four letters of the divine name. The wheel illustrates the continual movement of the seasons, ups and downs of life, reproduction, karma, and cyclical motion. The Egyptian jackal, who represents the evolution of lower forms to higher, and the snake, who continually sheds the skins it outgrows, adorn the sides.
