Walking Trails and Paths around the World

A page which focuses on Walking Trails and Paths, Specifically, it aims to offer a quick guide to walks near you, together with useful information about longer treks and hikes in distant lands.

As more trails and paths are added, the lens will grow and be re-shaped, you should also find it becoming a more interesting and useful resource but it does depend on input from you guys. Australian Trails

Or as the Australians call them, Tracks

Australian, John Chapman. professional writer and trekking guru, has compiled the definitive guide to Long Walking Paths across Australia and Tasmania. He has listed them in a table (link below), with each trail linked to a really detailed and informative page. Some of these walks are really long and would keep you in the outback for many weeks but most walkers obviously dip in and out on short sections.

New Zealand Trails

Walkers in New Zealand use the term tramping tracks

The Department of Conservation in New Zealand, has details about hundreds of walking opportunities for people of differing ability, on conservation land throughout the country.

The premier walking tracks are called the Great Walks and are through some of the best landscape scenery in New Zealand. There are huts available for overnight stays and both huts and tracks on the Great Walks are of a higher standard than many of the other walking trails in the country. Visitor pressure is so high for the Great Walks that a lot of them have booking systems in place.

The European Greenways

European Greenways are stand alone routes for non-motorised traffic, developed to integrate facilities, increase environmental value and quality of life. In other words maintained trails, of good width, slope and surface, and usually offering facilities along the route. Facilities on route can include general accommodation, hostels, museums, bicycle rentals and accommodation for equestrians (stables).

Greenways are often based on old railways, towpaths, Roman roads or old pilgrimage ways.

The Association Européenne des Voies Vertes provides a database of all possible greenways in 25 European countries, searchable by country and region.

I do a 10km walk every day along the banks of a lake in the centre of my city. The scenery is nothing much to talk about, but compared to the din and smog in the rest of the city, the stretch of walkway is indeed paradise. This lens is an interesting guide to waling trails around the world.
