American Victory Posters

War posters or Victory Posters were used by the US government during WWI and WWII to rally the community together in a united front for the war effort.  These posters could be empowering, startling, funny, or scary.  They encouraged the public to hold their tongues, plant victory gardens, buy war bonds, and conserve resources, as well as puching women to get jobs.  They encouraged people to enlist in the armed forces, and even tried to persuade soilders to stear clear of venerial diseases.

Victory Gardens

Your Victory GardenVictory gardens, also called war gardens or food gardens for defense, were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted at private residences to reduce the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort. In addition to indirectly aiding the war effort these gardens were also considered a civil "morale booster". Many posters were made to encourage citizens to plant victory gardens.

Rosie the Riveter

We Can Do It! (Rosie the Riveter)
Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the six million women who entered the workforce for the first time during World War II, many of whom worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and material. These women took the places of the male workers who were absent fighting in the Pacific and European theaters. The character is now considered a feminist icon in the US, and a herald of women's economic power to come. Rosie and her slogan "We Can Do It!" were featured on posters, magazines, and more.

That's some nice information on war posters. I've been an avid collector of posters since my teen years. Lately I've become quite interested in rare movie posters. Maybe because I'm getting a little older, I enjoy the nostalgic feeling I get from seeing posters of movies I enjoyed from years past. I just started a blog about rare movie posters, you may find interesting.
