Water Damage Mold

Water damage mold can be a serious problem if it's not taken care of immediately. Where there's a leak or any type of flooding, molds almost always make their presence known. Whether it's hidden or visible, these types of molds also known as fungi can cause serious health problems if they are not removed from your home.

One of the most toxic is known as black mold or Stachybotrys. Stachybotrys can cause allergic reactions, bleeding of the lungs, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, memory loss and in rare cases, death. These health problems can affect adults, elderly, children and even pets. Know one is safe around this toxic fungus.

Black Mold on Wikipedia

Stachybotrys is a genus of molds, or asexually-reproducing, filamentous fungi. Closely related to the genus Memnoniella, most Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose.

The most infamous species, S. chartarum (also known as S. atra) is known as "black mold" or "toxic black mold," and is frequently associated with poor indoor air quality that arises after fungal growth on water-damaged building materials. It is known to produce trichothecene mycotoxins including satratoxins.

The Hazards of Water Damage Mold

So if you see brownish or grayish colored spotting on your ceilings or walls, chances are you have a moldy problem. But before you grab a bottle of mold and mildew remover, stop. Not just any cleaner will work on Stachybotrys. You'll need to look for a cleaner that is made to permanently remove this type of hazardous fungus.

And if you think you can just spray the molds and be done with it, think again. Toxic molds require a little more attention in order for both you and your home to be safe. You'll need to wear rubber gloves and a paper mask (surgical) at the very least when you're working around this type of fungus. You'll also need to block off the infected area using a large sheet and tape. This will prevent the spores of the fungi from spreading to other parts of your home.
