A Disappointing Remake of an Original Classic

Let me be perfectly clear, this is the Annie re-made in 1999 with Alicia Morton and Kathy Bates, not the original Annie with Aileen Quinn and Carol Burnett (which was great). This watered down, poorly put together Annie is a sad display of Disney trying to take out the difficult and unfair parts of life for a new generation of children apparently not able to deal with reality.

Also, I am talking FILM adaptations of Annie, not live performances, which I don't think we can really compare.

My Review: Why I hate Annie?

Because it is lacking!!!

Annie

This movie lacks so much! It lacks the meanness, desperation, and alcoholism of Miss Hannigan. It lacks a sense of the harsh times. It lacks red hair and curls! It lacks an entertaining Rooster. It lacks a purpose for having Lily St. Regis there. It lacks a group of orphans that you care about. It lacks an ending that makes sense. It lacks Pun Jab!

What is the purpose of remaking a period drama? The original film was made in the eighties and took place thirties. Why would a film made in the nineties and taking place in the thirties be any better? It is not like there are special effects to be improved upon.

Why??????

What did you think of Annie (1999) ?

Is Annie (1999) horrible?

Loading

Yeah, It was TERRIBLE.

ShannenChan says:

I agree, the new version really sucks. What disappointed me most was the singing; it just wasn't up to par. The original was wonderful and it feels like someone sucked the life out of this one.

says:

The Burnett version was so much better, with real bite and joy. This latest version was bland.

sethgodin says:

Horrible, certainly. Just about all Annie-related media is horrible. The question on the table is if it's the worst ever. To do that takes real talent.

You're crazy, it's not that bad.

Beth says:

Actually, when i was little this is the first version i saw. when i saw the original i deffinately liked this version better! i thought this actor was a better singer and was cuter. whenever i thnk of annie i think of the re-made 1999 version. love it!

Bill Sloan says:

I Disagree I thought Alicia mortom Was A WAY better Actress and singer then Aileen Quinn

lizzy says:

you are stupid and ugly it was SPECTACULAR.iloveit i was going to be annie but then colby and alija got it. i hate dem freaks

lizzy says:

your stupid the new one is awsome.also im mrs hannigin at ces annie jr play. so shut up cause its a great and better
new one.

Lex says:

Heck no! The remake was much more well put together than the original. Sure, Miss Hannigan isn't drunk, but it's DISNEY!!!! And this movie is truer to the original stage-play. Disney tried to break some rules to make it more entertaining, which it did just great!

Who sucked the most life out of this film?

(or who just sucked the most?)

Annie quotes you love to hate.

This is just my point...who can remember any quotes from this movie? I can hear a hundred of quotes from the original, in my head, with the exact tone in their voice as they spoke them....but this film...I've got nothing. - If you can remember one, please add it.

Hard Knock Life

Annie 1999

Sure, they get the words and choreography right, but that's not enough. There needs to be real emotion, and the characters need to be memorable. The orphans don't seem to have personalities apart from each other except for about two of them.

Did Disney take too much of what made the original film adaptation of Annie so good out of this film?

Loading

Yes, too much good is gone.

No, this movie is great and it didn't need what was removed.

Desiree says:

Well i thought it was quite entertaining,Alicia could hit the high notes perfectly and of course since its a disney film what more could you expect?Movies have a budget and maybe some scenes couldn't make the cut but it was still good.

You're Never Fully Dressed

Danelle Wilson as Duffy is the only orphan who is actually entertaining. Disney, if you really wanted to make a movie more multi-cultural, you should have faced it head on and cast Danelle as Annie.

Case In Point....Easy Street

Just watch Easy Street performed in each movie. You'll surely see an immediate difference in the quality of the films. They just don't seem to care in the remake.

Kids in the eighties could deal with the harsh realities of life, why can kids now? Why do we present to them life with an orange backdrop assuming that they can't handle a graffiti wall?

I agree that the remakes tend to be worse than the originals (The Parent Trap!) and that "The Hard Knock Life" was much better choreographed in the first. I actually haven't seen the second, so I can't really compare the overall effect, but I do think Disney cast a child with quite a nice singing voice.

I haven't seen the remake and I pray that it is never afflicted upon me. I didn't mind the remake of The Parent Trap though, it didn't compare with the original but I didn't think it was horrid.
