So many memorable moments in one movie is sure to make a classic. This movie has it...memorable quotes, images, characters, songs. Perfectly cast, perfectly executed. While not an exact interpretation of Roald Dahl's book, this movie light and happy. It brings childhood dreams into full view, and encourages imagination and creativity.

And, the wisdom in this entertaining musical can be used throughout your life. As the Godfather does for many, for me, everything comes back to Wonka.

Showdown!

How does this adaption of Roald Dahl's Book compare to the more recent Tim Burton adaptation?

I prefer this version.

MindGuru says:

both are great versions. I don't think the Burton addition of the father-son backstory worked well, and Depp's Wonka was so creepy that it was hard to relate. I loved the scene in the new movie of the toys outside the factory on fire.

Bill S. says:

The original is best, but the Tim Burton version has good qualities, especially using Johnny Depp as the lead, in which he does an excellent job. It's just hard to improve on such a perfect or near-perfect film as the original.

I prefer Tim Burton's version.

The Wondrous Boat Ride

Round the world and home again
That's the sailor's way
Faster faster, faster faster

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going

There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing
Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

Love this book! it was all so typical of Dahl's writing and after I read about how he based a lot of the characters on people from his own childhood, it made a lot more sense to me. You can read about that here: http://www.infloox.com/person?id=6a5f6877
