If you enjoy reading webcomics, and want to find out more, if you admire the artists and want to see more of their work, or if you simply want to find some beautiful artwork on DeviantART... read on.
I am an avid webcomic reader, and a passionate artist, and a compulsive collector of pretty art. As such, one of the first things I look for now, on finding a well drawn webcomic, is whether they have a DeviantART gallery for me to look through, and hopefully watch - far easier than keeping track of different sites.
All the webcomics on here are ones I read regularly and enjoy. Doesn't necessarily mean they're good - but I think they are! Basically, this is the page of webcomics I would recommend anyone look at. I will of course add to this page as I discover more webcomic artists on DeviantART.
And may I point out to readers the Required Reading About Webcomics for readers, fans, would-be writers and artists and... well everyone. I'm collecting informative rants from webcomic artists in this section about how-tos, not-tos, dos, don't whats, wheres, etiquette, plot, design...

It's still being written up - original descriptions for each comic, as well as banners, art from the DeviantART gallery (hopefully including an example comic page) and links to books to buy, if they exist. This means I have to hunt all these down, reupload banners, get my linkage correct and in some cases rereads the comic's beginning, so I now what I'm talking about.

No Rest For The Wicked is one of my favourites - rarely updated, I recommend you add yourself to the email list. It references a great many old and wonderful fairy tales in interesting ways. The cast is fascinating, full of character - the curious, pretty and brave Princess November, who is very delicate and allergic to peas, out to break her curse of sleeplessness; the very catlike (that is selfish, refined, and clever) Puss; the mysterious and terrifying Red, who keeps her own counsel;
Pierre, the Marquis de Carabas - Puss' master... "He had an extremely loose upbringing. Also he fell on his head as child. Very sad."; Clare, the sad and guilt ridden once-queen, her hands replaced by silver; the Boy, a mysterious and cheerful stalker questing after Princess November, and Prince Ricardo, the endlessly picky, who dashes in and out of the story rescuing and discarding princesses...

- NR is one of those rare webcomics that you can recommend without feeling like a loser whose tastes will be judged and found wanting. I want to eat the artist's brain and gain her skills.

Digger is a story about a wombat. More specifically, it is a story about a particularly no-nonsense wombat who finds herself stuck on the wrong end of a one-way tunnel in a strange land where nonsense seems to be the specialty. Now with the help of a talking statue of a god, an outcast hyena, a shadow-being of undeterminate origin, and an oracular slug, she seeks to find out where she is and how to go about getting back to her Warren.
Updates Tuesdays and Thursdays
This book mixes cuteness and cleverness, demons, forgiveness, cannibal rites, talking snails, morality, death, trust and geology. I recommend it. A lot.
A very strong flavour of Pratchett - that classic mixture of humour, sideways-ness and plainest of sense, as well as the odd direct reference ('don't eat anything that talks', messenger 'pigeons') underpins this webcomic. Add in an astonishing variety of obscure mythologies - vampire gourds, creation stories, and the elephant god (and its statue) Ghanesh, to name a few - and different cultures - villagers, hunter-gatherers, fanatics and more - all conveyed realistically, all fitting into the story.... and through it all trudges Digger, trying to find her way home, dismissing problems and Gods wih equal practicality.
Reminds me a lot of Vimes, actually ^_^
Also, one of the best summations of good verus evil that I've read in a long while...

The Digger webcomic is interesting, entertaining, and a darn good story. Reading the hardcopy turned out to give a much better "flow" to the story than sitting in front of the computer and waiting on the refreshes. If you like Digger, give the book a try.
A spectacular story, centering on these strange circumstance: a stolid wombat strays significantly far from the familiar, into a world wrought with wonders, worries, and weirdness. Possessed of persistently practical perceptions, our poor hero is harassed by heteroclite horrors, and it is hilarious.
Oracular slugs, orphaned daemon babies in the form of shadows, blood-sucking fruit, talking statues, and a heroine in the form of a wombat who maybe accidentally stumbles into (or rather climbs into) a world that reluctantly needs her help--Digger is a story for everyone (well, young adults and older)! Ursula Vernon is not your garden variety genius. Her artwork is usually accompanied by witticisms that will make you laugh, her blog is hilarious, and her comic, Digger, brilliantly fun and addictive. Perhaps it is the way she plays with stereotypical perceptions of characters--slugs are wise; daemons, innocent; fruit, dangerous; wombats, sarcastic (well, maybe they really are sarcastic--I don't know). My favorite character is shadow child! Whenever she/he/it pops up in the story, her questions and comments make me laugh and remind me of a two or three year old human child's fantastic insight. If you want to check out some of the story (before making the purchase) go to Graphic Smash where you can view pages from Digger. I also recommend her book It Made Sense at the Time.
(don't tell - but I intend to buy it for someone soon. Family, preferably, so I can 'borrow' it off them)

And drawn beautifully - yet another webcomic whose quality and layout that tricks you into thinking it's a book you grabbed off the new releases stand in the library before it disappeared forever (...graphic novels get stolen a lot from public libraries, for some reason).

This webcomic is *big*. Each page is in graphic novel format, and it's long enough to have six published books already. And therefore, much easier, and nicer, to read holding it in your hands.
Lora Innes writes and illustrates the tale of 17-year-old Beatrice "Bea" Whaley, a student who begins having vivid dreams about a brave and handsome soldier named Alan Warren... a member of an elite group known as Knowlton's Rangers that fought during the Revolutionary War. Prone to keeping her head in the clouds, Bea welcomes her nightly adventures in 1776; filled with danger and romance they give her much to muse about the next day. But it is not long before Beatrice questions whether her dreams are simply dreams or something more... each issue of this new historical action romance features a full 25 pages of story and art.

Prices seem to be showing inconsistently, but - depending on the publisher - it seems to be $3.99-$5.95 for each graphic novel.

- I hadn't heard of these before (I haven't seen a comic since I sold off a giant box load of ones I'd had forever last year) but I do appreciate and admire the art work on this one in particular. Nice write up!

I actually picked up the book in the library a few months ago and was very impressed. (Well, actually, I was more impressed by it being something I'd seen online, actually making it into my library, but!) the art is lovely, every character is completely unique by definition (one single representative of each species across the universe). It combines superhero comics (they all have magic powers or special abilities) with fantasy manga.

Earthsong Vol 1
Amazon Price: $0.06 (as of 05/28/2012)
There are so many reasons why Earthsong is worth buying. Number one has to be the art though, it's one gorgeous page after the other. The colors are jaw dropping, the characters are extremely well designed, and overall if for nothing else you'll want to buy it just to be able look at something this gorgeous.
But you'll want to buy it for more then that. Because the storyline is as good as the artwork. It's engaging and unique, but has a lot of very familiar tones to it that will entertain sci-fi, fantasy, and even action/adventure fans alike. In my opinion, it's one of the best on-line to print comics since megatokyo.

Flaky Pastry takes place in an undefined world. Take elements of Fantasy and Science fiction, sprinkle a dash of the real world, mix thoroughly, beat it into submission with a rolling pin, and bake for thirty minutes.
The stories feature prominently: silliness and situational comedy, with a healthy dose of adventure, action, romance and outright craziness. It may also include the occasional spoof, obscure pop culture reference or social commentary. But not so much of that last one."

Starts out as DnD-type humour... in a more modern world. Nitrine, the goblin girl, and studious Marelle -who-is-NOT-a-catgirl need extra rent money, or their landlord will eat them... so they end up with Zintiel the completely insane, chaotic evil (was it evil? or neutral, I forget) high elf... it degenerates

Heliothaumic has a slightly odd, but engaging art style, which certainly grows on you. I'll warn right now for nudity, and sex, but it's handled in a 'this is part of our lives' way, and a natural result of the characters' interactions.
A futuristic, not-quite-Earth-as-we-know-it, story, with desert 'Deadlands' destroying arable farmland, cities, and feuding nations, technology, University students and elves. Swings from dying Elvish nation, to best friends feuding on a road trip, to getting a job, to sex, to Thaumaturgy, to politics...

An Electric Manga
"In this story, our protagonist Kano finds himself in a strange and fantastical place known as Gray World. As one would expect in such a situation, he is revealed to be a Chosen Hero charged with an Epic Quest to rescue a captured princess. But as it turns out, Kano has more than one person living in his head -- and at least one of these is a dangerous psychopath."

I LOVE this webcomic. Kagerou is japanese for dragonfly, and Luka Delaney's art is splendid, evolving and fantastic.
So, how do you tell if you're dreaming or possessed, if you're a magical Champion, with a penchant for suicide and multiple personalities?
The art is constantly improving, the characters are varied and believable, the main character has a very good reason to believe he's hallucinating - and somehow, he has to figure out the whole 'Champion' business. Parts of this are somewhat mature, due to zombies, selfharm, violence, insanity and various, but it's a very, very, good read, and the grittiness makes it more real.
I would point out that this is after reading,a nd rereading Kagerou for a long time. It's quite complicated, and the beginning doesn't explain much. But it all builds on itself, so it IS worth it.

I adore LinT - the art is lovely and constantly improving, the humour is oddball and never sacrificed, sacrfices are made and are always touching, people change and grow and fall in love, relationships are refused and stereotypes inverted. It begins as a fantasy romp of elf prince gathering his loyal band of ... people, and grows into a more epic 'save the kingdom and overthrow the usurper' story.
Having been rereading the comic from the beginning, the initial impressions:
First 2-3 pages are terrible. Drawing is poor and scratchy pencil or ink, dialogue is forced, and basically it's 'obvious scene setting'. (Actually, the first page is a much more recent painting of Zedwig, so loook forward to more of that later).
But then! It switches suddenly to well drawn pencil, dialogue improves and the storyline, while making little sense, flows more naturally. The quest begins!
Somewhere between 50-100 pages later, digital colour kicks in. While initially sorry to see the lovely pencil drawing disappear, the underlying grace of the art was still there and the colour lent a vibrancy of life to the scenes and people. This only improves.

About Red String
The very popular, sweet and romantic manga Red String follows Miharu and her school friends through life, love,a arranged marriages; covering boys, girls, school troubles, work, business, cooking and family. Sweet, but not simple, the characters are original and engaging. This comic is well written and drawn so nicely that I kept forgetting it was a webcomic and not a published manga I'd pick up in the library!
It's been picked up by Dark Horse Comics and the fourth volume is hopefully out in May.

The year is 2426. Earth is a patchwork quilt of restive, squabbling Domains, loosely joined under the mantle of the Empire, which fights to present a strong, united front to the dozens of technologically advanced, land-hungry, and not particularly moral alien races. The Empire also controls the Sol weftgate, humanity's connection to the galaxy at large: through it goes a steady stream of cheap labor, gone to build, clean, or kill for the wealthier races, and through it comes the money and alien technology that fuels much of Earth's economy.
None of which matters particularly to the patrons of the Sunset Grill, a bar on the shady side of town in the run-down and corrupt city of Kieselburg. They're too busy staying alive. Because no matter what the year, there will always be those who struggle to survive. And no matter how distant, how strange, or how advanced the place, there will always be someone to ask that all-important question: "Hey, is there anywhere in this dump I can get a decent beer?"

YAFGC immediately became one of my favourites on discovery, for the humour, storylines, incredibly amusing characters, gratuitous nudity, clever writing, interesting and often hilarious takes on classic DnD fantasy gaming conventions and the really, really well drawn figures.
It's almost all sketched out in pencil , which can be a little faint occasionally and looks a bit unfinished but I got used to it very quickly. I swear, simply reading this comic has improved my ability to draw people (YAFGC! Improve Your Art In Days! Take in Doses of One Strip A Day, Once A Day).
(Sadly, the flat colouring... well, I'm not a fan, and I don't care for the occasional colour splash pages. Maybe if it was always coloured, it would work, but it's too big a switch from welldrawn and delicate pencil sketch to flat cartoonish colour). Sadly, most of what they have for sale plays on the 'finished' and humourous side of the art. I'd LOVE to get my hands on a a sketchbook.
*please note, when I say 'gratuitous nudity', I mean 'do not read this at work, unless you are a) the boss or b) very lucky in your job. Or c) don't like your job.

But it's all in bullet points, so much less pretentiousness than my description XD
I have been doing webcomics for a little over six years now, which is not as long as some but is long enough to have made some observations about how things have changed over the years. This was originally gonna be really long and prose-y but I think I have chopped it down sufficiently to get my observations across!
ANYWAY TL;DR- SOME THINGS HAVE CHANGED AND SOME THINGS HAVE NOT AND I AM AN OLD FOGEY

First Edition: Just because webcomics live on the internet, doesn't mean you're required to be an asshole. In fact, dozens of people on the internet are actually rather nice people! You can be one, too. Just follow this nifty, easy-to-do guide, and become one of the elite, non-assholes on the web!
The points:
Webcomics artists are not robots.
Which means: AI development needs to get a move on
You're not as important as you think you are.
Unless you're me, of course
The webcomickers need to eat, and most of them enjoy living indoors.
I Another point for robots. And the outdoors is good for you. Oh wait, internet connections to upload comics... we'll let this one pass
Don't bitch about missed updates.
But they might not have noticed! (Although there are very good profit/readership reasons to not miss updates, that is on the artist's head. They are strong. Let them bear up alone with their suffering.)
What the characters say is not necessarily what the writer thinks.
Ah, but is what they said what the writer *thinks* they said? Is what you think they said, *what* they said? Is aaaaargh the same thing in all languages? Not according to Pratchett.
Don't pimp your own stuff in the comments section.

Read some of the other comments. So you can point out their typoes.
It's okay to say something positive.

I'm updating these as I find them, and I tag them by update day, so if you're looking for something to read, and today is Monday... then click through and use that tag to find something that catches your fancy!
This bookmarks list includes all the webcomics I read, as well as all the artists who ddon't have DeviantART galleries to link to on this lens.

'catchup' means I haven't finished reading it, so it might not stay on the list, but will be updated in the future. Surprisingly, there are no 'sunday' updates, apart from the daily ones.

Praising the artists!
Do they deserve it? WHO deserves it?
To quote from the above blog entry
"You might read a comic and think to yourself, "Boy, this sure is an excellent comic! But I'm sure the writer hears that all the time. I don't need to write and tell them about it." You would be wrong there.
People are much more likely to write in with something negative than something positive. People love to complain. But nothing motivates a webcomicker more than someone taking the time to tell them "Good job! Keep it up!""
