It's nice to know what owners of the Weber 841001 think before you spend your hard-earned dollars. Here's what they have to say.The Weber Performer Grill is a charcoal grill on steroids. Instead of using a charcoal chimney, you simply pile the coals in the middle, turn on the gas for about five minutes and then turn the gas off once the coals get going. It's really the best of both worlds and saves you from having to use lighter fluid and also lights the charcoal faster. It makes cooking for the family so much quicker and easier, and you still get that great taste of charcoal.
Pros: Great Weber quality. Easy to use gas ignition system, gets the charcoal burning and ready to cook on in only 15-18 minutes. Nice charcoal storage and useful side table. Detachable thermometer on dome lid is extremely useful. Lid holder is unbelievable convenient. Great one-touch removal for charcoal ash. Good customer service from Weber (side table arrived cracked--Weber is sending out another one via FedEx).
Cons: Still takes a bit more planning than gas.
Other Thoughts: I have always loved the taste of charcoal, but have cooked on gas for the last ten years because of its quick convenience. After work it just took too much time to fire up charcoal using a chimney, and I refuse to use lighter fluid for the bad taste and smells it can impart on food.
Weber has solve these problems and the Weber Performer has me back on a charcoal grill (and I couldn't be happier!). It has the great Weber quality that has become their trademark, and the extra features like the charcoal storage and one-touch ash removal really puts the Performer over the top.
Here's how it works: dump your charcoal in the Performer and turn on the gas and ignition. Time a 6-8 minute burn and then shut off the gas. Spread the charcoal out and let it burn for another 8-10 minutes. After that, you're ready to grill! Before I would have been looking at 45 minutes and a lot of hassle with a newspaper chimney.

Pros: I've had many grills (charcoal & gas) and this is by far the best charcoal grill I have owned. Using a chimney starter for lighting the coals is a easy and qucik as it gets. Big enough grate to have a hot and cool side. Most of the bells and whistles you can want. Replacement parts are easy to get (if you need any). This grill is so much fun I would grill out every night if I could.
Cons: Side work table needs to be bigger, but then I am a messy cook.
