Webkinz Price Guide

If you've never heard of Webkinz, they are plush animals toys developed by  a company called Ganz 2005. Since there introduction, they have grown steadily in popularity, with retired toys now reaching astronomical prices.

The toy itself is similar to many other small soft toys, however they come with a special code in their label allowing the owner access to the Webkinz World website to "adopt" a virtual version of their pet to interact with.

They are essentially combining the popularity of two former toys, Beanie Babies and Neopets. Due to the limited edition aspect, they become very popular in the secondary market, creating additional "Buzz" around the Toy.

How popular have they become? Well the regular Webkinz sell for a Manufactures suggested retail of roughly $10.00. These are consistently selling for an average of $40.00 on eBay, with several editions that have now been retired selling for hundreds of dollars.

Why are they selling for so much?

Several reasons have contributed to the popularity and prices of Webkinz. After their introduction in 2005 and into 2006 they were well received, but not a hot item as such. Then their collectibility was perceived and their value continued to climb on auction sites such as eBay. odds are, the majority of those who first jumped on the bandwagon were smaller independent toy retailers who remember the craze (and the money they made) of Bennie Babies. Webkinz haven't even remotely reached the popularity of that toy, but they're well on their way.

Secondly, Ganz (Webkinz parent company) is based in Canada. As of today (April 15th, 2007)  there is still a CNN railway strike, which has ongoing for some time. This has interfeared with the logistics of the comany, forcing delays in the arrival of a majority of the Webkinz and Lil Kinz shipments.

Lastly, Ganz was not prepared to handle the sudden increased demand which essentially appeared overnight. All new shipments to retailers have been delayed until July. This is making Webkinz and Lil Kinz harder than ever to find. That will increase the demand, increase the price and encourage resellers to be even more determined than ever to buy up all they can find.

Theoretically, Ganz can flood the market with Webkinz products. That *could* kill the high price and restore Webkinz to its intended place as a nice toy for children. However, this is most likely not going to happen. The fact they are retiring products means that they want a perceived scarcity. Also, as long as resellers are buying everything that hits the shelves, they are guaranteed sales. Expect Ganz to ride this wave to the end.

When will it end?

Expect Webkinz to follow the life cycle of Beanie Babies. The prices will rise and rise until suddenly people collectively realize that that are paying way too much for a simple, newly manufactured, children's toy. Just don't be caught holding inventory when the end eventually hits. If you're following prices closely, you'll see it coming. However, I don't expect an end to the insanity for at least a year, so enjoy it while you can.
