Causes of Weight Gain During Menopause
Why?
Some of the most common reasons for menopausal weight gain are:
- Increased stress levels. So many women lead extraordinarily stressful lives that this fact is often taken for granted.
However long-term elevated stress levels have an effect on the body, and this effect is often exacerbated at the onset of menopause.
Elevated stress levels led to an increase in cortisol. High cortisol levels can contribute to increased abdominal fat by interfering with the thyroid gland's normal function, which in turn, acts to slow down the metabolism - Hormonal shifts in your physiology during this time. For example, during menopause, the ovaries' production of estrogen falls. To compensate, the body creates more and larger fat cells, which in turn produce estrogen as the ovaries' production falls off, thus contributing to weight gain.
- Later in life our metabolism naturally tends to slow down by as much as 10%-20%
- Lack of physical activity. The fact of the matter is that we were not intended to sit at a desk, drive instead of walk, and become couch potatoes in front of our televisions all day.
Our increased sedentary lifestyles mean we exercise much less than in previous generations. Weight gain is one of the consequences of decreased levels of physical activity. - Our modern diet. Okay, most of us know that many of the foods we eat are not good for us. Convenience foods are typically overloaded with fat, preservatives, sodium, and refined carbohydrates, which turns to sugar in the body.
Other foods have been so overly processed that any nutrients they had are removed. Even many so called "low-fat" foods are loaded with empty calories that many of us do not burn off with enough physical activity

If you already exercise regularly, congratulations! However, you might want to try to increase the time you exercise (say maybe from 20 to 30 minutes a session), or pick a different activity altogether. Why?
