West Richland is a 22 square mile city in Benton County, Washington, United States, served by two elementary schools, with an annual budget of about 30 million dollars. The population was 8,385 at the 2000 census, however in 2006 Washington Office of Financial Management estimated that the population had grown to 10,520. The city is generally included in the Tri-Cities (for purposes of counting population, etc.), even though that technically makes four cities (along with Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco).

West Richland was officially incorporated on June 17, 1955. At the time the city was founded, Richland, Washington was owned by the U.S. Government by virtue of the Manhattan Project. A number of residents had chaffed at the government's regulations, and as a result many of them had moved across the Yakima River, where it was possible to purchase land and own (rather than rent) a house.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 8,385 people, 2,937 households, and 2,305 families residing in the city. The population density was 386.1/mi² (149.1/km²). There were 3,092 housing units at an average density of 142.4/mi² (55.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.18% White, 0.56% African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. Lewis and Clark landed on Blalock Island in the Columbia River near the modern location of Richland in 1805, and found Indian villages dating back to prehistoric times.  For the next half a century fur trade kept the locals busy, with canoes from the Hudson Bay Company travelling up and down the Columbia River.  The extensive grasslands of the area were cut for hay by the men of Fort Walla Walla (now known as Wallula), and the hay was used to feed their growing herds of livestock.
