This merger has been quite successful.
The colours of the Magpies - black and white, and the Tigers - black and orange have also been merged.

Balmain had won eleven premierships in their history and Western Suburbs had won four premierships.

ARL, NRL, Super League
In 1995, The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) became the Australian Rugby League (ARL). This was due to the expansion of rugby league into other states. In 1996 the war with Super League broke out. Eight ARL teams left to join the Super League competition for the 1997 season. The Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies stayed loyal to the ARL.
In 1998 the ARL and Super League united to form the National Rugby League (NRL). The officials decided to reduce the competition to 14 teams down from the 22 teams that formed both competitions. One extra club was joining in 1998, so nine teams had to be scrapped.
The NRL offered extra funding and guarantees of a spot in the new competition if teams merged.
Balmain considered merging with Parramatta but thought that they might be swallowed up in a takeover rather than a merger.
Wests considered merging with Penrith and the Bulldogs but also feared a 'takeover'.
By June 1999, the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies decided that they would merge together to form a competitive club.
Each took a 50% share in the club.
The first squad of 25 players was made up of only 6 Wests players (Wests had a poor 1999 season) and most of the other players came from Balmain.
The Board was made up of two members from each club and the chairman was rotated between the clubs.
The CEO came from Wests.
The first coach was Balmain coach Wayne Pearce.
The first captain was Jarrod McCracken.
Name and Logo is a combination of both teams.
Colours also combined.
