What is Gerd? - Wikipedia
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, or acid reflux disease is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux in
the oesophagus.
This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the oesophagus and the stomach. This can be due to incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter, transient lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the oesophagus, or a hiatal hernia.
Respiratory and laryngeal manifestations of GERD are commonly referred to as extraesophageal reflux disease (EERD).
What is Gerd? How it's Diagnosed
Tests to determine a GERD diagnosis may include x-rays after the patient drinks a solution of barium and lies down with the head lower than the feet.
In addition an esophagoscopy may be ordered. An Esophagoscopy is a test where a flexible tube is inserted so the gastroenterologist can have a better view of the esophagus to determine the best course of action.
