Planning Now for the Life You Want

I thought retirement meant you stopped working one day, and did not work again.

You were now free to live a life of leisure, sort of like Senior Skip Day in high school, except it went on for awhile.

I remember Senior Skip Day in high school.  There were a bunch of kids who were told by the administration that they must attend on this very unofficial holiday, or face dire consequences for their graduation.

Those of us who were not given that ultimatum set up lawn chairs across the street from the high school where all of our - still-attending-class mates could see us and knash their teeth.

We were bored with that arrangement rather quickly.

And I imagine I would be rather bored with retirement that did not involve some challenge too.

Which is part of the point that Bolles and Nelson make in their book, What Color is Your Parachute for Retirement.

They suggest that we can plan for a retirement that includes engagement,  challenge, and service.  Plan for it?  Yeah, that is cool.

So what are the talents that I want to engage in my transition?

Well,   I have small children,  one 9, one 3, and she is a ball of fire.  (Being a Leo, she needs no sleep).  I am a small business owner,  I am a husband, I am a budding web entrepreneur,  and I love to read.

I think that what intrigues me the most is the online business aspect of my life.  Making money building Squidoo lenses?  That is so cool.  Now to figure out what it means to optimize a web page.

Incredibly Gracious Gift

I received an unexpected package today at my office, from Madison, Wi. sent by a Mr. John Nelson.
I did not recognize the name immediately, but the package felt like it contained a book, and I thought to mayself, must be one of those Amazon purchases that I make and forget about until the book arrives, and then I opened the package to find an autographed copy of "What Color is Your Parachute for Retirement" by Richard N. Bolles and John Nelson, and then I remembered who John Nelson was. And I was incredibly touched and honored that you, Mr. Nelson, would take the time to acknowledge my Squidoo lens. Although I am sure when you first came across it on Google, you might have been worried that someone was stealing your copyright.
I am very touched. Thankyou. Mike Logan

Too Many Retirement Options...?

Organize With Free Mind

I had never heard of Free Mind until Bob Jenkins, aka Bob the Teacher, did a tutorial on Free Mind.

And now I have done the tutorial and recognize that at least some of what I have whirling around in my ADD head could be committed to an online format that would keep my chores from being forgotten.

For example, I donated to Arbor Day not too long ago, and received 10 little trees in return, which have been planted, and are now fully exposed to the tree eating rabbits in our neighborhood.

I have been trying to remember to get some kind of fencing to protect them, and have forgotten for the last eight days.

With Free Mind, I can look at my to-do list while online, and I am routinely reminded of the poor, unprotected trees.

And I can begin to schedule for my summer pick-up and drop-off schedule for my kids, so neither of them are left somewhere inadvertantly, and maybe I can begin to create an online vision of retirement on my Free Mind, so I can enjoy a moment or two without having to schedule anything.

Well, if you need a tool like this, then click here for Bob's Discover Free Mind tutorial.
