What Is 3D TV? A Look Inside 3D Television Technology
What is 3D TV? How does the 3D TV work? How do you watch 3D TV? What makes a TV 3D ready? These are some of the questions that have been popping up since the announcement that the 3D TV is the new HDTV and it is finally making its appearance to the masses.
What Is 3D TV?
In a nutshell, 3D TV gives the viewer an illusion of a real-world scenario by introducing two sets of pictures that are slightly different from each other; one picture for each eye.
When opened, our eyes see images that are minutely different from each other. If you were to close one eye and try to grab something, it wouldn't be that easy because your depth-perception is off.
3D TV is designed to deliver differing images that our brains see as one which gives us magnified sense of presence and depth.

3D TV Lingo
With any new product release, there will be new product lingo to learn. Below you will find some common terms used when discussing 3D TVs:3D Anaglyph
A method that uses a pair of superimposed pictures to create an encoded three-demensional image.
Autostereoscopic
A method used to display three-demensional images that a person can see without using special glasses or headgear.
3D Lenticular
An adjective that means pertaining to or shaped like a lens. 3D Television technology uses lenticular software so that different images are magnified when viewed from different angles.
Polarized Glasses
3D glasses that restrict the light that reaches the eye allowing the eye the illusion of seeing in 3D.
Shutter Glasses
3D viewing glasses that contain liquid crystal that is transparent and is controlled by a radio frequency, kind of like Bluetooth.
3D Goggles
Another word for Shutter Glasses or Polarized Glasses.
2D to 3D
A phrase used when discussing the conversion of 2D images to 3D images.
How Do You Watch 3D TV?
There is no simple way around this. You have to have wireless 3D Shutter Glasses or Polarized Glasses, an emitter, a fast computer, and software like TriDef or Stereoscopic Player (all of these things were mentioned in the video above).Unfortunately, none or almost none of these things come with the actual 3D TV. The manufacturers are currently playing around with the idea of bundling all of these goodies into a package deal (NOT the computer, of course!).
Oh well, until that happens, the glasses will have to purchased separately.
