Movie beginnings and problems
Maurice Sendak, the author of the the original childrens book Where The Wild Things Are, approached Spike Jonze to create a film adaptation of the book.
Filming for the movie began in 2005 and was originally scheduled to be released in May 2008, then October 2008 and the current release date is October 16th, 2009.
However early reports of the test screenings weren't postivie. Children were crying and the movie was considered too dark. Warner Brothers are reported as wanting to re-shoot the entire movie, instead more time and money was given to complete the project in a way that was more family friendly.

What is expected?
A sweet childrens movie?
The following was written before the movie came out in 2009. Read it and then answer the question below to see if my prediction was correct.
Although this book is a children's book, the story in 1963 was originally considered controversial. Max was not a well behaved little boy, he was mischievous, and parents at the time thought that he was not a good role model for children.
Maurice Sendak did not want to create a feel-good moral laden children's book when he wrote Where The Wild Things Are, and it appears that the movie isn't looking for that type of story line either.
The director and writers of the movie, Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers, kept in contact with the original author, Maurice Sendak, and it is reported that he is pleased with the direction the movie has taken. Combine that with reports of Warner Brothers being unhappy with the original movie, stating that it was not family friendly, dark, and too scary, and the possible outcome is a movie that could become more controversial than the book was in 1963.
My prediction? Don't expect syrup and sweetness.

Heads On and We Shoot: The Making of Where the Wild Things Are (Hardcover)
Great for Collectors
This film incorporates the most dynamic elements of voice performance, live-action puppetry, and computer animation into a live-action adventure story that captures the magic of the book-and takes it to a new dimension. In order to preserve the realistic nature of the film, the Wild Things are not created digitally. Instead, Spike Jonze brings these characters to life in the form of physical suits built by the Jim Henson Company. These creatures, operated by a suit performer, interact with the live actor playing Max on set in front of the camera. After principal photography is finished, CGI is being used to make the creatures completely lifelike and convincing.
HEADS ON AND WE SHOOT unveils the unique collaboration behind this highly anticipated film-the combined work of Maurice Sendak, Spike Jonze, Dave Eggers, and all the cast and crew. The book design is heavily image-based, a mix of early sketches, storyboards, character designs, and extensive behind-the-scenes photographs that show both incredible live-action puppetry and computer animation. The text includes forewords by Jonze and Eggers, interviews with the cast and crew, stories from on and off the set, and early drafts of the screenplay. The resulting book will be simultaneously a beautiful object for collectors, an insider%u2032s guide for devotees, and an intimate window into the creative process.

The Wild Things - based loosely on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay cowritten with Spike Jonze - is about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can't control. His father is gone, his mother is spending time with a younger boyfriend, his sister is becoming a teenager and no longer has interest in him. At the same time, Max finds himself capable of startling acts of wildness: he wears a wolf suit, bites his mom, and can't always control his outbursts. During a fight at home, Max flees and runs away into the woods. He finds a boat there, jumps in, and ends up on the open sea, destination unknown. He lands on the island of the Wild Things, and soon he becomes their king. But things get complicated when Max realizes that the Wild Things want as much from him as he wants from them. Funny, dark, and alive, The Wild Things is a timeless and time-tested tale for all ages.
