Impressionist Art of Nicole Whittaker

Welcome to my lens on Impressionist art. I'm the artist, Nicole Whittaker.
A dress, only seemingly green, gliding at the bend of a garden path: a zebra pattern of sunlight on the couples stretched out on the grass. A heightening of colors, almost of the very odors, in the sap-filled orchards. The noonday sun reigns over the summer, and the leaves are thick behind the table cleared of dishes.
Nudes with opalescent flesh before the boundless sea. Couples dancing, the close of a meal, streets decked with flags, boulevards swarming with carriages and pedestrians, ballerinas in the glare of theatre spotlights, Sunday promenades on the islands of Seine - such are the themes of Impressionist art.

I work intuitively, spontaneously, and symbolically with the elements of time and space. Strong colours, gestures and brushwork all come together in dramatic and energetic compositions of my own particular iconography. I am fundamentally interested in conveying all the trials and tribulations of life, love and the beauty that can be found in it all. The warm happy colours I choose often contradict the underlying fierce emotions I wish to convey.
Throughout my life I have lived all over Australia and have seen many different places before moving to where I currently live in Bundaberg Queensland.
An award winning Artist, I paint using whichever tools feel right to portray the emotion of the piece and my art is shown in many Queensland and Melbourne homes.
The inspiration for my art comes from many sources, such as nature, dreams, my own imagination and the life I have lived.
Passing of the Turtle

The first in the Passing of the Turtle series.
A baby Turtle on his long journey towards the safety of the sea.
Stormy Night
A storm disturbs the bay, just as day gives way to night.
Tropical Dream

Do you dream of lying on a sun kissed beach in a tropical paradise?

Art in Progress (Painting Demostration)
A painting from start to finish.

I got the idea for this painting from a beautiful photo on the front cover of a greyhound travel magazine. I haven't named it yet, that usually doesn't happen until the painting is finished but it's a woman sitting on a beach meditating.
I started by drawing my design on the canvas with a stick of charcoal. why charcoal? It's easy to rub out without leaving any visible lines.
second step was to cover the canvas in my chosen background colour. I use orange because it gives a nice boost to my colours and makes the whole painting look more alive.
Although you can use oil paint for the background colour and many do, I use acrylic because it dries in a few minutes instead of hours or days (depending on how thin you put it on). Don't worry about mixing the two types of paint, once it's dry you can easily paint the oils over the acrylic.
Just remember that you can't paint acrylic over oil.
Art in Progress (Painting Demostration) 2
A painting from start to finish

I have painted the figure in Windsor & newton flesh tint mixed with a bit of white, this is then rubbed into the charcoal areas the emphasize the shape. The figure's pants are painted in pure white and the beach is painted with a mixture of naples yellow, yellow ocher and white. Less white is added to the mixture to make it progressively darker the closer the beach gets towards the water. The oil colour on the beach is then fanned to create a progressive tone.
