The inventors of the soap, the Phoenicians and later the Spanish olive oil added to give a softer smell the soap, the soap name was given by the French.
The soap was invented by the Phoenicians, six hundred years before Christ. They boiled water with goat fat and wood ashes, obtaining a pasty soap. The solid soap only appeared in the seventh century, when Arabs discovered the process of saponification - a mixture of natural oils, animal fat and lye, which hardens after boiled. The Spanish, having learned its lesson from the Arabs, it added olive oil to give the soap a milder scent. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and finally several European cities became centers of soap producers - among them, Marseille, France, and Savona, Italy. It was the city of Savona that the French took the word Savon soap, and the diminutive Savonnette, soap.
