Do you remember the following quote made by a little man in his battle fatigues?

BAGHDAD BOB'S CRUISE MISSILE QUOTE

The Cruise missiles do not frighten anyone. We are catching them like fish in a river!

WHAT IF BAGHDAD BOB WAS RIGHT?

Surely Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf AKA BAGHDAD BOB could not possibly have been correct with his rhetorical flourishes?

BAGHDAD BOB QUOTES CREDIBLE OR NOT?

"How can you lay siege to a whole country? Who is really under siege now? Baghdad cannot be besieged. Al-Nasiriyah cannot be besieged. Basra cannot be besieged."

"They are shocked because of what they have seen. No one received them with roses. They were received with bombs, shoes and bullets. Now the game has been exposed."

BAGHDAD BOB WHERE ARE YOU NOW ?

Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf AKA "Baghdad Bob" left Iraq in the chaotic months after Saddam's fall in 2003 and emerged in the UAE.

Was he questioned and released by coalition forces or did he leave without much notice from troops?

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

BAGHDAD BOB: The chicken never crossed the road! He is safe in Baghdad, miles from the marauding vehicles of the infidel! THERE IS NO ROAD!

While we're on the subject of Bob here's a joke about another Bob

Miss Jones gave her class an assignment:-Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day the kids came back and one by one began to tell their stories.

Susan said, "My dad's a farmer and we have a lot of egg-laying hens. One day we were taking our eggs to market in a basket on the front seat of the pickup when we hit a bump in the road and all the eggs went flying and broke making a right mess"

"And what's the moral of the story?" asked Miss Jones

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket!" said Susan

"Very good," said the teacher. "Now, Claire?"

"My family are farmers too. But we raise chickens for the meat. We had a 40 eggs one time, but when they hatched we only got 12 live chicks.

And the moral to my story is,don't count your chickens until they're hatched Miss." said Claire

"That was a fine story Claire. Kyle do you have a story to share with the class?"

"Yes, Miss, my daddy told me this story about my Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob was a Green Beret in Iraq and his Blackhawk Helicopter got hit. He had to crash land in enemy territory and all he had was a bottle of whiskey, a machine gun and a machete.

He drank the whiskey on the way down so it wouldn't break and then he landed right in the middle of 100 enemy troops. He killed 80 of them with the machine gun until he ran out of bullets, then he killed 15 more with the machete till the blade broke and then he killed the last 5 with his bare hands."

"Good heavens," said the horrified Miss Jones, " What kind of moral did your daddy tell you comes from that amazing story?"

"Don't f*ck with Uncle Bob when he's been drinking."

VALENTINE'S JOKE

Little Stephen comes home from school and tells his father that they learned about the history of Valentine's Day. "Since Valentine's day is for a Christian saint and we're Jewish," he asks, "will God get mad at me for giving someone a Valentine Card?"

Stephen's father thinks a bit, then says "No, I don't think God would get mad at all. Who do you want to give a Valentine Card to?"

"Osama Bin Laden," Stephen says.

"Why Osama Bin Laden?" his father asks in total shock.

"Well," Stephen says, "I thought that if a little American Jewish boy could have enough love in his heart to give Osama a Valentine Card, he might start to think that maybe we're not all bad, and maybe start loving people a little bit.

Also,if other kids saw what I did and they sent Valentine's Cards to Osama, he'd love everyone a lot;then he'd start going all over the place to tell everyone how much he loved them and how he didn't hate anyone anymore."

His father's heart swells and with a tear in his eye he looks at his boy with newfound pride. "Stephen, that's the most wonderful thing I've ever heard."

"I know," Stephen says, "and once that gets him out in the open, the Marines could blow the crap out of him."

COUPLE OF MILITARY QUOTES

They say "those uniforms make you look fat and your arses look huge."

IED'S,A TRUE STORY OF HEROISM IN THE LINE OFF FIRE

HABBANIYAH,IRAQ

Marines of Combat Team 6,2nd Marine Division,II Marine Expeditionary Force (Foward) & Explosive Ordnance Disposal Security Detachment team examine an area after an IED attack destroyed the Humvee shown on April 13.Cpl.Randall Sevene,Humvee driver,Headquarters Company,RCT-6, II MEF (Fwd),saved 2 Marines during the attack & received a Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C.,Oct.18.

STORY
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.(Oct.24,2007)

"It literally felt like one of those war scenes out of a movie," said Cpl. Randall Sevene, who served as a Humvee driver for Headquarters Company, Regimental Combat Team 6, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq,Dec 2006-April 2007.

"The scariest part was when the fire started cooking grenades & about 1,000 .50 caliber rounds in the Humvee," Sevene said."You see those war movies on TV,that's what it felt like for me.It was unreal."

Despite the surreal circumstances,Sevene displayed bravery & a willingness to risk his life to protect his comrades. The risk was so great it earned him a Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device Oct.18.

Sevene performed heroic feats as a Lance Cpl driving during a mounted patrol with the regiment's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Security Detachment in Habbaniyah, Iraq,on Fri April 13.

"We were clearing a route with the Iraqi Army bringing EOD to support (3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II MEF (Fwd))," Sevene said. "There were 4 Humvees and a Cougar (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle) in the mounted patrol. I was in the second Humvee, providing security."

The entire detachment was sitting in a potential kill-zone with 15-20 IEDs planted in the area. EOD located the detonation wires between two buildings and quickly began disarming them. The wires led out to the roadside where the mounted patrol was parked.

"The security element cleared the buildings,& EOD stopped two IEDs from detonating," Sevene said. "The IED on the corner went off and blew the Humvee in front of me up in the air."

According to the award citation, the vehicle was thrown 45 feet away from the resulting crater. The driver,Lance Cpl.Anson L.Roberts,& the machine gunner,Lance Cpl.Yadiel Sanchez, both assigned to the EOD Security Detachment, were in the vehicle when the IED exploded. While Sanchez was thrown 15 meters away, Roberts was still trapped in the flame-engulfed Humvee.

"I was knocked out for a few seconds, when I came to,I remember hearing on the radio,'I'm on fire, I'm on fire,'" Sevene said."I saw Sanchez on the ground and thought,'Well, it can't be him, 'cause he's not on fire.'"

The citation also states Sevene immediately located Roberts and assisted him by opening the driver's door so Roberts could escape the burning vehicle. While ammunition in the Humvee ignited, Sevene ran to aid Sanchez, who was severely injured with a broken leg, elbow, spine and two broken ribs.

"It really hurt at first," Sanchez said. "I was trying to take my (flak jacket) off because it felt like something was stuck in my back."

An insurgent on the rooftop of the closest building began firing erratically at the patrol with an AK-47 rifle, sending rounds all around them, Sevene recalled.

"I closed Sanchez' flak and dragged him over behind a wooden fence to conceal us," Sevene said. "The rounds were landing close to us, so I shielded his body with as much of my flak as I could."

Sgt.Douglas Van Norden,EOD technician with the detachment, then ran to Sevene and helped drag Sanchez into the second building.

"While we were in the second building, the rest of the team engaged the first building with the MK-19 40mm machine gun,& M2 .50 caliber machine gun," Sevene said. "I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the insurgents didn't get away, because they destroyed that building."

Sevene & 3other Marines knocked down a door in the building and used it as a stretcher to transport Sanchez back to the Humvees, where they waited for a CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter to evacuate the 2 severely injured Marines.

After the evacuation,Sevene went back into action and manned his M240G medium machine gun on his disabled Humvee, guarding the EOD technicians while they discovered the remaining IEDs.

Ten days after the episode,Sevene was medically evacuated from Habbaniyah due to the injuries he sustained from the blast.

Brig. Gen. David H. Berger, assistant division commander,2nd Marine Division, awarded Sevene the Bronze Star Medal with combat "V" during the ceremony in front of approximately 30 Marines from the battalion's remain behind element.

The Bronze Star Medal is the 4th highest military decoration awarded for an act of bravery or heroism. Though Sevene accepted the medal, he said he'd prefer to tell a different story.

"I'd rather give it back and not have had the (incident) happen," Sevene said. "I'd give it all back for Roberts' injuries," Sevene added about Roberts, who is recovering from third degree burns and hand injuries at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Additionally, Roberts & Sanchez received the Purple Heart Medal for the sacrifices they made while serving in Iraq.

IED's:-THE MILITARY RESPONSE TO THE THREAT

Powerful IEDs - set off by cellphones, doorbells, toy remotes and tripwires - are now the leading cause of death among US troops in Iraq & Afghanistan. The US military is responding to the IED threat through improvements in personal body armor, improved vehicle armoring, electronic counter-measures, greater situational awareness and improved training and operational focus.

New vehicles, specially designed for the roles currently undertaken by the less well armoured Humvee's, will soon be making their presence felt
in these countries.

One such vehicle is the The Cougar H series. This is a medium-sized blast-protected vehicle and is produced in both 4 and 6 wheel configurations.

Customized for multiple tasks, the Cougar H series is ideally suited to urban patrol, route clearance support, mine and explosive ordnance disposal, troop transport, reconnaissance, command & control, aswell as a the role of lead convoy vehicle. Relatively few Cougars have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan

The US Marine Corps' requirement for mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles ( MRAP's )would drop from the planned 3,700 to about 2,400...

Marine Commandant Gen.T.James Conway has signaled the possibility of examining the commitment to the MRAP vehicles. He's on record as saying his Marine force was getting too heavy. "I'm a little bit concerned about us keeping our expeditionary flavor," he said.

At the same time, an independent study questioned whether the Pentagon was buying too many of the pricey vehicles, which can cost as much as $1 million each. The study found that in some cases, the heavily armored MRAP vehicles , with their bomb-deflecting V-shaped hulls, might not be the answer that many believe they are.

However,if you look at this maybe you'll think they are the answer. All crew walked away from this IED Attack on a US Marine MRAP COUGAR and the engine ended up 100 yrds away!!!

MRAP MK2 THE GRIZZLY

Blackwater USA has unveiled the latest version of its Grizzly mine resistant, ambush protected (MRAP) at DSEi. The company says that Grizzly will be a competitor for US Army and Marine Corps MRAP II purchases and for the British Army's Medium Protected Patrol Vehicle contract.

A distinctive feature of the Grizzly is a diamond-cross-section armored hull. Blackwater says that the design responds to the fact that IED blasts hit from the side of the road - not from underneath like a classic mine. The diamond shape, says Blackwater, is better protected from the side than the classic South African model with a v-shaped bottom and vertical sides.

Blackwater is refining the vehicle's armor design, combining steel, air gaps and composites. The company says that tests are showing that it may be possible to remove the interior steel shell, allowing the composite layer to act as its own spall shield.

Grizzly runs on a Seagrave chassis (the Wisconsin-based company has a long history of building fire trucks) and is propelled by a 330 hp Caterpillar C7 turbo-diesel.

5000 MRAP'S DELIVERED TO IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN

MRAP's SUPPORT OUR TROOPS,DO YOU SUPPORT OUR TROOPS?

As of April 5, more than 5,000 mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles have been delivered to the U.S. Central Command area of operations. The milestone of 5,000 occurs a little more than three months after the Defense Department kept its promise of 1,500 of the vehicles in theater before the end of 2007. In fact, as of today, the total already has climbed to more than 5,200, officials with U.S. Transportation Command, at Scott Air Force Bawe, Ill., said.

An earlier turning point occurred in late March, when the number of vehicles delivered by sea exceeded the number airlifted to the area of operations. TransCom officials project that, by the end of June, all MRAP vehicles will be shipped by sea.

Marine Corps Systems Command, in Quantico, Va., assigned as the joint program executive office, manages the overall MRAP program for DoD. Prior to shipment, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command center at Charleston, S.C., integrates and installs government-furnished equipment into the vehicles.

"The many successes of the joint MRAP vehicle program are the result of an overwhelming team effort by the many players in this program," said Brig. Gen. Michael Brogan, commander of Marine Corps Systems Command. "From production to integration, from transportation to fielding, a number of commands and organizations have played major roles in this program."

TransCom professionals "exhibited flexibility and resourcefulness to accomplish the movement mission," the general added.

The command's MRAP end-to-end distribution team has been monitoring the pipeline from production through to arrival in theater and delivery to final destination. "Our success is definitely a team effort," said Army Lt. Col. John Hanson, who leads the team.

TransCom officials noted that the command's MRAP success has come even as it has supported humanitarian relief operations around the world, and other commitments made to CentCom and other combatant commands.

The transportation team included members of the command's components to ensure visibility throughout the system, officials said. Air Force Air Mobility Command C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III and contracted AN-124 Condor aircraft delivered the majority of MRAPs until this week. The Army's Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command scheduled ocean carrier deliveries by sea and handled port operations. The Navy's Military Sealift Command delivered vehicles with its fast sealift ships and large, medium-speed, roll-on, roll-off vessels as well as chartered commercial ships.

"This is truly an achievement of all the military and commercial partners in this venture," Air Force Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, TransCom commander, said. "These lifesaving vehicles are proving their value every day in protecting our warfighters and keeping them safe while in harm's way."

12/2009: Doc, I gotta tell you, these new pads are the best thing since sliced bread! My Soldiers are now finding it comfortable and bearable, compared to the pads we were issued. No more headaches, no more sweaty smell, gotta love it. Finally, these really make the ACH feel more stable and a more natural feeling on your head, the best you can get while wearing a helmet. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to Soldiers and their well being. Bottom line, these are definately a 10 out of 10!

1/09/2009: Being a Paratrooper, I have seen my share of concussions with the pads that come with the ACH helmet. A few guys I know have jumped from an airplane and landed hard enough to knock themselves out cause the pads are so hard and stiff. Now that we are back in Iraq, I am more worried about TBI from IED strikes while inside the new MRAP vehicles. Thanks for what you are doing. I think what you are doing is very relevant but I believe the word needs to get out to more soldiers. I have been here in Iraq three times and this is the first I have heard of your program. Thanks again!!

12/31/08: Doc,these pads are the best......this was the best gift the guys have received so far! We still need some more pads if you can send them.....we have someone with a large head and the size 6 pads didn't fit but if you could get size 4 that would be awesome. total number of pads still needed are about 45. 1st and 2nd Platoon guys are really whining about not getting any....thanks for all you are doing!!!!

The old gent admitted that he had indeed been to France previously.

ANTI-FRENCH JOKE

There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and Halle Berry sitting together in a train carriage going through Provence.

Suddenly the train went through a tunnel and as it was an old style train with no lights in the carriages it went completely dark. Then there was a kissing noise and the sound of a really loud slap.

When the train came out of the tunnel, Halle Berry and the Englishman were sitting as if nothing had happened and the Frenchman had his hand against his face as if he had been slapped there.

The Frenchman was thinking: "The English fella must have kissed Halle Berry and she missed him and slapped me instead."

Halle Berry was thinking: "The French chap must have tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Englishman who has then slapped him"

And the Englishman was thinking: "This is great.
The next time the train goes through a tunnel I'll make another kissing noise and slap that French bastard again "

FRENCH PUTDOWN,A TRUE STORY

A while ago, whilst attending a conference that included admirals in both the US and the French navies the following occurred.

At a cocktail reception, an officer himself in a small group that included an admiral from each of the two navies.

The French admiral started complaining that whereas Europeans learned many languages,Americans only learned English.

He then asked. "Why is it that we have to speak English in these conferences rather than you having to speak French?"

Without even hesitating, the American admiral replied.

"Maybe it is because we arranged it so that you did not have to learn to speak German."

There's a story about the military pilot calling for a priority landing, because his single-engine jet fighter was running "a bit peaked".

Air Traffic Control told the fighter chappie that he was number two, behind a B-52 Stratofortress that had 1 engine shut down.

"Ah," the fighter pilot remarked, "The dreaded Seven-Engine approach".

In addition to the dismissals, the 5th Bomb Wing has been decertified from handling Advanced Cruise Missiles or nuclear warheads and suspended from any tactical ferry movement operations

The B-52 was loaded with Advanced Cruise Missiles, part of a Defense Department effort to decommission 400 of the ACMs so as to fall in line with the 2002 disarmament treaty with Russia.

The nuclear warheads, however, should have been removed at MINOT AFB before being transported to BARKSDALE AFB,the officers said. The missiles were mounted onto the pylons of the B-52 bomber's wings.OOOPS

5 CHANCES TO PREVENT THE BENT SPEAR INCIDENT

1: Aug 29TH 2007 (AM),airmen assigned to the Minot weapons storage area were supposed to pick up and transport 2 pylons to a B-52 assigned to Barksdale AFB. Each pylon is a self-contained package of 6 cruise missiles that can be quickly mounted to the wing of a B-52.The airmen, however, failed to examine all the warheads on the missiles mounted to the pylons.

Cruise Missiles armed with nuclear warheads are not stored with Cruise Missiles armed with conventional warheads. In laymans terms, certain pylons of Cruise Missiles have nuclear warheads, while others have dummy warheads that are essentially dead weight.

2: The second error occurred when aircrews operating the trailer tasked with moving the pylons to the B-52 began hooking up while the required wing pylon inspection was still underway

3: Then the airmen failed to verify the payload, nuclear or otherwise,of the missiles mounted on the pylon that they hooked up to be transported to the B-52

4: Then, before the Cruise Missiles should have been moved to the aircraft, munitions control failed to assess a munitions database,as required. This would have alerted them that one of the pylons was not properly prepared for transfer to Barksdale AFB

5: As a result of the first 4 mistakes, the nuclear warheads were unknowingly towed out to the flight line at 9:44 a.m. on Aug 29th 2007 without any of the increased security measures being used when nuclear warheads leave a storage facility.

The nuclear warheads were loaded onto the B-52 and sat on the flight line, which officials assured was secure.

Airmen did have one last chance to catch their mistake before the B-52 took offfor Barksdale AFB.However, the Barksdale-assigned B-52 radar navigator failed to check all missiles loaded for transport as required.

The instructor radar navigator performed only a "spot check" and only on 1 of the right pylons, the one that had been properly prepared for transport! ( COVER UP THEORY'S ABOUND ) This marked the 5th and final error, according to the USAF report.

At 08:40 hrs on Aug 30th 2007, the B-52 left Minot AFB on its 1,100-mile flight to Louisiana. The B-52 landing there at 11:23 hrs.It remained on the flight line with the nuclear warheads still on its left wing for more than 8 hours before munitions personnel, who followed correct procedures, unloaded the weapons and discovered the enormous mistake.

B-52 BOMBER BOOKS,SCALE MODELS,TOYS AND DVD'S

STRATOFORTRESS: The Story of the B-52

Boeing's mighty B-52 Stratofortress has seen continuous operational service with the United States Air Force since the type was introduced in 1957. The aircraft has been upgraded several times and has assumed many different new roles since it was originally conceived and then provided the key airborne platform for America's strategic nuclear force. It is predicted that it will serve as a front-line aircraft until 2040.

Apart from the formidable threat it provided during the long years of the 'Cold War', the aircraft has played a significant part in all US overseas operations since Vietnam. The more recent include Desert Storm in 1991, the Balkan conflict, Afghanistan and the liberation of Iraq. Over 700 were built and around 80 remain in service.

This book includes chapters on Concept Requirement, Design and Development, Production, Evolution and Variant Models, Operational Tasking, Operational History (with first-hand accounts from crews), Weapons and Equipment Carried, Flying the Aircraft and Current Service Operations.

t will be highly illustrated with many original shots taken aboard B-52s, together with archive material and also color profiles.

B-52 Stratofortress Units In Operation Desert Storm (Combat Aircraft 50)

With the ending of the Cold War, the B-52's traditional combat role became redundant, and the USAF looked for new ways to use the machine. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in August 1990 gave the B-52 the chance to prove its worth in the new world order, and Stratofortress crews flying the B-52G seized the opportunity with both hands. This book explains how, flying from bases in the Indian Ocean, Britain, Spain and Saudi Arabia, the B-52G was at the forefront of the campaign to free Kuwait of Saddam's forces and dropped the first bombs of Operation Desert Storm.

APACHE AH-64 HELICOPTER SUPPORTING THE TROOPS

Longbow Apache AH-64 D Helicopters

The AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with reverse-tricycle landing gear, and tandem cockpit for a crew of two. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. First flown on 1 October 1975, the AH-64 features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems. The Apache is armed with a 30 mm M230 Chain Gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's belly. The AH-64 also carries a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rocket pods on four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons. The AH-64 also features double- and triple-redundant aircraft systems to improve survivability for the aircraft and crew in combat, as well as improved crash survivability for the pilots.

The U.S. Army selected the AH-64 over the Bell YAH-63 in 1976, awarding Hughes Helicopters a pre-production contract for two more aircraft. In 1982, the Army approved full production. McDonnell Douglas continued production and development after purchasing Hughes Helicopters from Summa Corporation in 1984. The first production AH-64D Apache Longbow was delivered to the Army in March 1997. In August 1997, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas merged to become The Boeing Company. Today, AH-64 production is continued by the Boeing Integrated Defense Systems division.

History Channel Presents: Operation Desert Storm (2-DVDs Set)

It was the first test for the remade American military, and it was an extraordinary success. In large part, this was due to the effective use of new battlefield technologies. OPERATION DESERT STORM concentrates on this aspect of the conflict while telling the overall story Iraq's expulsion from Kuwait. The Air Campaign chronicles the beginning of the coalition assault and the Tomahawk missies, Stealth bombers, traditional F111 and F5 bombers and Apache and Cobra helicopters which cleared the way for the war on the ground. The Ground War shows how a new generation of tanks, global positioning systems and the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) let the coalition carry out General Schwarzkopf's bold plan in only four days. The Final Showdown revisits the last, desperate efforts by the Republican Guard to stop the coalition advance and the Iraqi destruction of Kuwait's infrastructure and industry.

CH-47 CHINOOK HELICOPTER

CHINOOK HELICOPTERS SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS SINCE 1962

The iconic CH-47 Chinook Helicopter has been supporting the armed forces of many nations since the early 1960's from Afghanistan to Vietnam.

MILITARY HELICOPTER T-SHIRTS-THIS IS HOW I ROLL

The Boeing-Vertol CH-47 Chinook is a versatile, twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) was faster than utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s and even many of today. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks.

The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s. The helicopter is now produced by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Chinooks have been sold to 16 nations; the largest users are the U.S. Army and the Royal Air Force, see Boeing Chinook (UK variants).

M1 ABRAMS MBT

THE M1 ABRAMS AND M1A2 ABRAMS,THE TANKS TO BE SEEN IN

The M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank is the named after the late Gen.Creighton W. Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the 37th Armored Battalion. It is the backbone of the US Army, and several US allies aswell.

The purpose of this MBT is to provide mobile firepower for armies to successfully engage and destroy any opposing armored fighting vehicle in the world, while providing protection for it's crew in any conceivable combat environment. The Abrams is capable of engaging the enemy in any weather, day or night on the battlefield using its firepower, speed and shock effect.

The US Army made the decision for a new tank series in 1972 and awarded developmental contracts in 1973.The first prototypes of the M1 reached the testing stage in 1976, and the tank began to arrive in battalions in February 1980.The M1 enjoyed a low silhouette and a very high speed, thanks to a rather voracious gas turbine engine.Chobham spaced armor resolved the problem of protection versus mobility. A sophisticated fire control system provided main gun stabilization for shooting on the move and a precise laser range finder,thermal-imaging night sights, and a digital ballistic computer solved the gunnery problem, thus maximizing the utility of the 105mm main gun.

The M1 Abrams has a crew of 4,the driver sits centered in the hull and forward of the turret, while the loader, gunner and tank commander occupy the turret, with the loader situated to the left of the main gun and the gunner and tank commander sitting in tandem on the right side.A three periscope vision block provides for forward vision and the center block can be removed and replaced with an AN/TVS-2 low-light periscope.

The turret is also angular in appearance, with the main gun mounted in an exposed mantlet in the center of the turret face. The M68 rifled cannon is accompanied by the M240 coaxial (COAX) machine gun which is located to the right of the main gun.
The M1 Abrams has two turret access hatches, mounted side by side, in the middle of the turret roof. The loader's hatch, located on the left side,is equipped with a pintle mounted M240 7.62mm machine gun.The hatch itself is equipped with a single vision periscope on a rotating base. When not in use, the drivers AN/TVS-2 sight may be used in the loader's hatch vision block. The tank commander's hatch is ringed by vision periscopes and the Commander's Weapon Station cupola is equipped with an M2 HB caliber .50 machine gun.

The Gunner's Primary Sight (GPS) is located forward of the commander's cupola. The GPS is housed in an armored box with hinged doors shielding the optics when not in use. The GPS is divided into two halves; a clear glass window for normal daylight viewing and an IR transparent Germanium coated window for the thermal imaging sight. The Laser Range Finder (LRF) is fired through the daylight window.

Assembly plants had manufactured more than 2,300 of the 62-ton M1 tank by January 1985, when the new version, the MlA1, was approved for full production. The MlA1 had improved armor and a 120mm. main gun that had increased range and kill probability. By the summer of 1990 several variations of the M1 had replaced the M60 in the active force and in a number of Army Reserve and National Guard battalions. Many believed the Abarms to be the first American tank since World War II that was qualitatively superior to Soviet models.

Production of M1A1 tanks for the US Army is complete. Over 8,800 M1 and M1A1 tanks have been produced for the US Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Production of new M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks is in its final phase for Foreign Military Sales. Egypt has purchased 777 M1A1 tank kits. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia purchased and fielded 315 M1A2 Abrams tanks in the Royal Saudi Land Forces. The Government of Kuwait purchased and fielded 218 M1A2 Abrams tanks in the Kuwaiti Land Forces. All of these nations are considering additional orders or configuration upgrades.

In lieu of new production, the Army is upgrading approximately 1,000 older M1 tanks to the M1A2 configuration. The Army also initiated a modification program for the M1A2 to enhance its digital command and control capabilities and to add the second generation forward looking infrared (FLIR) sights to improve the tank's fightability and lethality during limited visibility. This system enhancement program will be fielded in the 2000 time frame concurrently with the M2A3 Bradley and other advanced digital systems. The initial M1A2 fielding to the First Calvary Division, Ft. Hood, TX, is underway. The Army will continue to field M1A2s to the CONUS contingency corps and other first to fight units.

Although fielded in 1980, the Abrams remained untested for over 10 years. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, there were concerns that the Abrams would fall victim to the sand and long months of continuous operation without the luxury of peacetime maintenance facilities. There were also doubts about the combat survivability of the extensive turret electronics. Immediately following President Bush's decision to commit US forces to the Gulf region in defense of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, American armored units began the difficult process of relocating to the threatened area. Due to the shear size and weight of the Abrams, the C-5 Galaxy, the largest cargo aircraft in the US Air Force inventory, was only able to handle one tank at a time. This meant that nearly all of the Abrams tanks deployed in the Gulf War were shipped by cargo ship. Although slow in coming, the arrival of the Abrams was much welcomed by Allied forces, as it is capable of defeating any tank in the Iraqi inventory.

The Iraqi Army had a considerable array of tanks, mostly purchased from the former Soviet Union. The backbone of the Iraqi divisions were about 500 T-72's, these modern Soviet tanks were armed with an excellent 125mm smoothbore weapon and had many of the same advanced features found on the Abrams. Despite it's advanced design, the T-72 proved to be inferior to the M1A1's deployed during the Gulf War, and compared more closely with the older M60A3 tanks used there by the US Marine Corps.

In his book "Desert Victory - The War for Kuwait", author Norman Friedman writes that "The U.S. Army in Saudi Arabia probably had about 1,900 M1A1 tanks. Its ability to fire reliably when moving at speed over rough ground (because of the stabilized gun mount) gave it a capability that proved valuable in the Gulf. The Abrams tank also has%u2026 vision devices that proved effective not only at night, but also in the dust and smoke of Kuwaiti daytime. On average, an Abrams outranged an Iraqi tank by about 1,000 meters." The actual numbers of Abrams M1 and M1A1 tanks deployed to the Gulf War (according to official DOD sources) are as follows: A total of 1,848 M1A1 and M1A1 "Heavy Armor" (or HA) tanks were deployed between the US Army and Marine Corp (who fielded 16 M1A1's and 60 M1A1(HA) tanks).

As the Gulf War shifted pace from Operation Desert Shield to Operation Desert Storm, and the preparatory bombardment lifted, U.S. Abrams tanks spearheaded the attack on Iraqi fortifications and engaged enemy tanks whenever and wherever possible. Just as they had done in the Iran-Iraq War, the Iraqi Army used it's tanks as fixed anti-tank and artillery pieces, digging them into the ground to reduce target signature. However, this also prevented their quick movement and Allied air power smashed nearly 50% of Iraq's tank threat before Allied armor had moved across the border. After that the Abrams tanks quickly destroyed a number of Iraqi tanks that did manage to go mobile.

The Abrams' thermal sights were unhampered by the clouds of thick black smoke over the battlefield that were the result of burning Kuwaiti oil wells. In fact many Gunners relied on their "night" sights in full daylight. Such was not the case with the sights in the Iraqi tanks, which were being hit from units they could not even see. Concerns about the M1A1's range were eliminated by a massive resupply operation that will be studied for years as a model of tactical efficiency.

During the Gulf War only 18 Abrams tanks were taken out of service due to battle damage: nine were permanent losses, and another nine suffered repairable damage, mostly from mines. Not a single Abrams crewman was lost in the conflict. There were few reports of mechanical failure. US armor commanders maintained an unprecedented 90% operational readiness for their Abrams Main Battle Tanks.

Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War (Potomac Books' The Warriors series)

A tribute for one of the ugliest, albeit most lethally effective, warplanes ever built, the A-10 Warthog - as well as for the men who flew A-10 Warthogs during the Operation Desert Storm campaign. Using the interviews of over 100 A-10 pilots who served in the Persian Gulf during the 1990-91 hostilities, Smallwood (himself an aviator and Korean War vet) offers riveting perspectives on aerial combat. The heart of his narrative, however, are vivid accounts of how A-10's devastated Iraqi forces and installations.

A-10 Warthog ShirtsA-10 Warthog Shirts

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is an American single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic for the United States Air Force to provide close air support (CAS) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with a limited air interdiction capability. It is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support.

The A-10's official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a fighter that was particularly effective at close air support. The A-10 is more commonly known by its nickname "Warthog" or simply "Hog".Jenkins 1998, pp. 4, backcover. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control, guiding other aircraft against ground targets. A-10s used primarily in this role are designated OA-10.Jenkins 1998, p. 63. The A-10 is expected to be replaced by the F-35 in 2028 or later.

WORD HAS IT IT'S A THESAURUS OR IS IT A DICTIONARY?

WORDSMITH'S PARADISE

A THESAURUS is similar to a DICTIONARY, but instead of definitions and pronunciations, it contains synonyms and sometimes antonyms.

The first example of this genre, ROGET'S THESAURUS, was compiled in 1805 by Peter Roget, and published in 1852. Entries in ROGET'S THESAURUS are listed conceptually rather than alphabetically.

Although including synonyms and antonyms, entries in a thesaurus should not be taken as a list of them. The entries are also designed for drawing distinctions between similar words and assisting in choosing exactly the right word. Unlike a DICTIONARY, a THESAURUS entry does not define words.

Barrett sniper rifles a masterpiece of engineering from Ronnie Barrett

Barrett 50 cal sniper rifle info from Wikipedia

Sniper shirt for Barrett sniper rifle fans

The M82 (also sometimes designated by the military as the M107) is a recoil-operated, semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle developed by the American Barrett Firearms Manufacturing. A heavy SASR (Special Application Scoped Rifle), it is used by many units and armies around the world. It is also called the "Light Fifty" for its .50 caliber BMG (12.7 mm) chambering. The weapon is found in two variants ? the original M82A1 (and A3) and the bullpup M82A2. The M82A2 is no longer manufactured, though the XM500 can be seen as its successor, in that it also employs a bullpup configuration.
