Why I Homeschooled My Children

The reasons why I chose to homeschool my children were planted in me when I was around twelve or thirteen years old. After my parents divorce my mom started hanging out with a group of hippies, and they had started what they called a Free School. I never attended the school, but thought the concept of hands on learning was much better than the traditional class room, textbook type learning. When I had my own child and started to learn more about homeschooling, the reasons multiplied.

Why I Chose Homeschooling

These are just a few of the reasons, and not necessarily in this order.

I felt that hands on learning was better than just book learning.

I felt it was my responsibility to raise my children and I need more than just 4-5 years to do it.

I became concerned with the things they'd be exposed to at an early age in the public system.

I wanted to give them a Biblical foundation and world view.

I wanted to teach them how to learn, not just memorize facts.

I wanted them to be able to learn about things that interested them.

LEARNING By Playing With LEGOS

Just by looking at this photo, I'm going to guess at some of the things these boys are learning.

Cooperation, planning, design, architecture to name a few. Had I been there when they were doing this, I could probably add a few more.

For young children much can be learned through play and imagination is nurtured through it. It grieves me that this is quenched in so many especially since many schools put such a heavy emphasis on academics at an early age. Also, budget cuts often cut things like art, music, PE etc. These are all just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic.

Legos on Amazon

This set would be great if your were studying the Medieval time period. I can just here them now acting out what you read from a historical fiction book.

Considering Homeschooling?

These resources may help.

Not everyone should homeschool. However, a lot more people could homeschool, but don't believe they can. Ask any homeschool parent and they will assure you they're nothing special. We all have weakness and faults just as classroom teachers do. It comes with the territory of being human.

Twenty-five to thirty years ago, when the current homeschooling movement was getting started there wasn't a lot of resources out there. The early pioneers forged a trail for us and now there is a plethora of resources, maybe even to many. Below are some books you may find helpful has you contemplate going down the homeschool path.
