Help Lions in Africa/ Shop for Lion Gifts

Is the lion your favorite animal? Do you dream of going on an African safari? Sadly, the king of beasts' survival is threatened due to numerous complex factors on the great African continent, not the least of which is the Tanzanian government's proposal to build a highway in Serengeti National Park which would disrupt the migration of thousands of wildebeests thereby destroying the entire ecosystem! I recently attended a fundraiser in my hometown for White Lion Global Trust and learned that due to hunting, many lion prides in Botswana, Kenya and South Africa have lost their largest dominant males because they have been repeatedly targeted by trophy hunters. This creates a downward spiral for the lion prides who need the mature males to protect the females and cubs so that their valuable lineage is passed on to future generations. On this lens animal lovers can sign important petitions, stay informed on lion conservation, learn about the White Lions of Timbavati, read what lion researchers are doing via their blogs, and support LION AID in the UK. You can still search for for great lion gift ideas here- get informative and entertaining books about lions, great lion greeting cards, learn about the best Kenya safari tours and lodges, order Swahili language tapes and armchair traveler gifts like lion photo calendars, lion Christmas cards, lion ornaments and even souvenir bumper stickers. Remember, your donation to Save the Serengeti, Lion Aid, or The White Lion Global Trust would be a great conservation gift for any animal lover.

PETITION- REROUTE THE SERENGETI HIGHWAY

over 29,000 signatures

NOTE: The government of Tanzania has refused funding for a southern route, saying it will build the highway through the Serengeti. If the route for the highway is not changed in Serengeti National Park, it will destroy the Serengeti Eco-system including Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya as well as the greatest wildlife migration in Africa.

Lion Lover's Reading List

I hope you enjoy my brief summaries for these books

"ZAMBA, THE GREATEST LION THAT EVER LIVED" -A wonderful book about professional animal trainer Ralph Helfer and his long
relationship with his favorite lion, a wild orphaned lion cub. A great gift for any animal lover, especially those interested in African wildlife and anyone interested in wild animal training and the ethical treatment of animals.

"INTO AFRICA"- Ever wonder what it's really like to be a lion researcher? Read Craig Packer's funny but true book about his work in the Serengeti. The truth is, lion biologists spend a lot of time collecting lion poo and watching lions sleep. A good book to read before going on safari.

"THE RABBI'S CAT 2", Sequel to "The Rabbi's Cat", this illustrated book by french cartoonist Joann Sfar about the adventures of a talking cat and his friendship with a lion and a nomad named Malka will please lion lovers and cat lovers alike.

"WHAT EVER YOU DO, DON'T RUN" , Read about the real life adventures of Peter Allison, a safari guide in Botswana. Allison's tales of tangles with lions, elephants, baboons, petulant tourists and mice will have you grinning from ear to ear. A great gift idea for the safari enthusiast.

"GOLDEN SHADOWS, FLYING HOOVES", by celebrated lion researcher George Schaller will please true lion lovers and animal lovers alike. Although less technical than "The Serengeti Lion", you will still learn many interesting facts about lion society and behaviour. Readers will be delighted by stories about the special animals Schaller's family adopted during their stay in the Serengeti, like Giri the warthog and Fungus the banded mongoose. A most enjoyable book.

The lion is an apex predator

What does this mean? If the apex predator in an ecosystem goes extinct, the entire system will be out of balance, and the ecosystem will collapse. That is why we must save the lion!

STOP "CANNED" HUNTING NOW!

Sign the petition to stop canned hunting of lions:

What is "Canned" Hunting?

Animal lovers must help stop this cruel practice.

"Canned" hunting is a cruel and unsportsmanlike practice in which animals are trapped in enclosures with no chance of escape so that they may be easily slaughtered by so-called "hunters." Sadly, canned hunts are routine in South Africa, where thousands of lions are bred, reared, and held in captivity for this purpose.

    Thanks Tipi,
I had a dream the last night of my Tanzanian safari in July of 2009 in which I was visited by 3 white lion cubs, yet I had never heard of or read about the Timbavati white lions until recently. Were the white lions trying to send me a message, or was this just a bizarre coincidence? I will let the readers decide.
  • Tipi Oct 4, 2010 @ 5:12 pm | delete
Nice gifts, That video is really nice to see with the lion whisperer. I would love to be in there with the lions petting them, well maybe just the babies. That's just awesome!

Kenya Safari Lodges

Browse this link list of fine safari lodges in Kenya. I've stayed at all of them. Each lodge offers good food, comfortable accommodations, and unique wildlife viewing. You can often see beautiful birds and the comical Vervet monkeys right on the grounds of these lodges.
Keekerok Lodge
A fancy safari lodge close to all the wildlife migration action. Has the biggest gift shop of any of the lodges on this list.
Mara Serena
Another wonderful lodge, each room has a view of the Mara river. Warning- keep your balcony doors shut at night or you might find yourself face to face with a big toothy baboon!
Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge
A cozy lodge close to Lake Nakuru National Park and the famous flamingos. Look for white rhinos down by the beach. Colubus monkeys hang out in the tree tops. We saw our one and only leopard in a tree at Lake Nakuru .
Samburu Serena
I loved Samburu National Reserve. In this desert environment, the animals move at a slower pace to conserve energy. We saw beautiful birds, including Hornbills on the grounds of this lodge.
Holiday Inn, Nairobi
Although not inexpensive, you will feel safe and well taken care of by the knowledgeable staff. They can arrange day trips to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage , the Giraffe Center, and the Nairobi National Museum for you.

Learn to Speak Swahili

While on safari, show your respect for East African culture by learning the basics of Swahili, the National language of Kenya. Your efforts will be warmly received by appreciative lodge staff and safari drivers. By choosing the Pimsleur Language program you will be able to express your needs and desires in a clear and polite way. Personally I am delighted with this learning method. I recommend keeping the CD's in your car where you can listen to as much or little as you have time. It certainly makes for a more interesting commute! Be sure to start by listening to the intro CD. I also advise beginning your language program 6 to 8 months in advance of your safari, so that you can enjoy learning this beautiful melodic language at a relaxed pace.
