William Henry Jackson - outstanding photographs of the breathtaking scenery

Ranked #8,729 in Arts & Design, #153,515 overall

Most dramatic photograph of all, Old Faithful

William Henry Jackson devoted most of his long life to the pursuit of his first love, photography. When he died in 1942 at the age of ninety-nine, he was mourned as the last of the great frontier photographers.

In 1870, Dr. Ferdinand V. Hayden of the U.S. Geological Survey hired Jackson as photographer for a three-month expedition in the American West. Jackson enjoyed the work, took some outstanding photographs of the breathtaking scenery, and had a dry gorge on the North Platte River named Jackson Canyon in his honor.

His goal was to protect America's wilderness

The following year, in 1871, Dr. Hayden persuaded Jackson to join his team on an expedition to the Yellowstone area of Wyoming. Jackson packed an eight- by ten-inch camera, a stereo camera (stereo views were becoming extremely popular), and two hundred pounds of additional photographic equipment. Fortunately, he was accompanied on the trek by a very trustworthy and tireless mule. On a later trip, in 1875, he carried a twenty- by twenty-four-inch camera - the largest plates ever used on a field trip in North America. He felt the extra burden was worth it to demonstrate to his fellow Americans the extraordinary grandeur of the mountains and wilderness scenery - grandeur which, he believed, smaller cameras "cannot possibly impart."

Jackson's employer, Dr. Hayden, was a man of great vision and determination, and he possessed an acute appreciation of the power of photography. His goal was to protect America's wilderness from commercial exploitation and private gain by preserving its fragile beauty for all Americans, including future generations.

Yellowstone National Park, the foundation of the National Park System,

Realizing that cold geological reports filled with endless statistics and charts might not have the desired effect on the federal government, Hayden decided to produce a photographic album of nine of Jackson's powerful images, including the most dramatic photograph of all, "Old Faithful." Every member of the House and Senate received a beautifully bound, gold-embossed volume. Needless to say, the bill to create Yellowstone National Park, the foundation of the National Park System, passed by a good margin. President Ulysses S. Grant signed it into law on March 1,1872.
America's awareness of its priceless wilderness heritage was aroused, and the attractions of the national parks created in the years following became central features of the country's travel and holiday plans.
Millions of photographs of Old Faithful have since been taken (the great master Ansel Adams photographed it on three different occasions), but none were more influential than Jackson's 1871 picture and, some would claim, none more beautiful.
