Willow Tree Nativities: A new Christmas tradition.

 

For many of us, as children, a highlight of decorating for Christmas was setting up the family nativity set under the tree.  Even though they may have been the standard sets our parents bought at their favorite department store, they were our tradition and we loved them.  Now that we have families of our own, we want the feel of a traditional Christmas, but we want to create our own traditions for our own family and our children.  We want something that feels new, but something that will become a tradition for our own children.  The Willow Tree Nativity Set and the Willow Tree Christmas Story Set provide excellent alternatives t the traditional sets.  Both sets have the look and feel of American folk art.  At the same time they are elegant, peaceful and serene. They are a combination of the modern and traditional, without a loss of the true meaning of Christmas.

Willow Tree Nativity Set versus Willow Tree Christmas Story 

Both nativity sets convey all the qualities of the Willow Tree line. The Willow Tree Christmas Story Set is the larger (in figure size) and more colorful. It has a more finished feel to it, while still conveying a folk art simplicity. The Willow Tree Nativity Set is smaller and the coloring is more subdued with a more roughly carved appearance. Both sets are available with varying numbers of pieces and prices. You can start small and add to the sets as fast (or slowly) as you choose. Both sets have their own backdrops and accessories.

Susan Lordi, Willow Tree Artist 

Susan Lordi creates each sculpture. The sculpture is cast in resin from the original carving, and then individually painted by hand. Family and friends are used as models for the artist. According to the Willow Treewebsite, "Softly washed colors, carved and metal accents, and representative icons of nature mark Susan's work." Shapes and postures are used to express the feeling of each piece. Faces are left unfinished, allowing the viewer to make their own interpretation.
