With Wenders - to far away places & within
Thematically the films of Wenders often deal with the innermost, states of consciousness, while exploring the ambivalent impact of American culture on the post-WWII Europe. Stylistically his films compose Hollywood forms and genres with elements of both American and European independent cinema.
Wim Wenders has been making films since 1967. I have collected some of the favourites here and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have done and still do.
" I always enjoy being home wherever I am "

in motion - on time
on the road again

One of the recurring themes in the films of Wenders is wandering, in time and space. The motion in his films never stops. The road continues forward, as the sound lingers on, forever.
My father, a great cinephile, introduced me to Wim Wenders through Paris, Texas. Back then I was still quite young and I found the film rather weird, albeit intriguing. In 1991 I saw the Notebook on Cities and Clothes in an old, classical theatre, with once luxurious deep red velvet seats and the scent of the past century mixed with hot celluloid and a lot of dust in the air. This setting, together with this brilliant film is still one of my most memorable experiences with cinema. The road folding with the material in the hands of Yohji Yamamoto. The road and Yohji Yamamoto signing his name over and over again. The presence of Wenders in this film. All in motion - on time.
A fissured, empty, almost lunar landscape - seen from a bird's-eye view. The camera
hovers over it. In the distance, a lone man appears; he is crossing this desert.
A hawk lands on a boulder.
The man stops, looks at the bird.
Then he drinks the last drops of water from a large plastic bottle.
He is wearing a cheap Mexican suit, a red baseball cap and sandals
with bandages wrapped around them. His clothes are covered with dust
and soaked with sweat. He has been walking for a long time.
This is Travis.

the screenplay, the study & the film
"Filmmaking... should just remain a way of life sometimes,
like taking a walk, reading a newspaper, eating, writing
notes, driving a car or shooting this film here, for instance,
made from day to day, carried along by nothing other
than its curiosity - a notebook on cities and clothes."

"Until The End of the World is a tale
of love and hope - a metaphor for
the journey we must
all take toward our future ...
the ultimate road movie."

"When he disappears, in a way this is when his true self appears, this is when he all
of a sudden sees things about the city, about his own life, about his feelings that he
hasn't seen before. So, in a way, another person appears, a much more sincere
person than the power player he was before. I think disappearing is always just a
metaphor for something else that appears."

I want to make a film that'll just float on
this river - not interfering with it,
just drifting along."

I took some liberties, I did not exaggerate."
