Winter Olympics and its Events

Ranked #12,156 in Sports & Recreation, #292,639 overall

Fifteen events are held at the Winter Olympics

The Winter Games began in 1924 and has been massively growing since that time. In the vein of the Summer Olympics, there are some events that ignite sports fans' imagination more than others. These events draw the largest spectator crowds and get the most airtime on television.

Figure-Skating
Forever the fans' favorite, figure skating has several categories for which viewers impatiently examine every twist on the ice. The categories are:
-Singles (Men's and Ladies): Athletes execute lovely twirls and jumps in rhythm to songs.
-Ice Dancing: mixed couples perform to music. One central aspect of this discipline is that the male must not lift his colleague above shoulder-level.
-Pairs: Resembling Ice Dancing in that it involves couples.
In the mens' sport, the USA has time after time done well, winning more first place medals than all other nations. The outfits are just as much a part of the allure of this event as the grace shown by the figure-skaters.

Alpine-Skiing(Slalom)
Made a part of the Winter Olympics in 1936 in Germany, this sport has a number of categories that are easy to grasp by viewers. Its hair-raising turns and ultra fast speeds have turned it into one of the more popular games at the Winter Olympic Games. Skiers often reach speeds of just about eighty one MPH.
One of the elements that make this event so popular is that skiers, despite their speed have to go through several gates during their descent down what is referred to as a vertical drop. If a gate is missed, the participant has to go back up and pass through the gate or be disqualified. This event is definitely not for the weak-minded.
Alpine skiing involves:
-Giant Slalom
-Slalom
-Super G (also called Super Giant Slalom)
-Downhill
-Super-Combined
Both the men and women's games have the same appeal for spectators. Not astoundingly, the top three countries over the years have been Austria, Switzerland and France.

Skiing (Freestyle)
The dizzying jumps and twists keep audience enthralled as they observe skiers carry out almost astonishing feats. Apart from the splendor of the exhibition of male against nature, audience hold their breath at the inexpressible spills that are an expected consequence of freestyle skiing.

Men's Ice Hockey
This event might well be the most well-liked of the Winter Olympics. It hasn't decreased in popularity since the early inauguration of the sport. Truthfully, this is only one of six original sports that began the Winter Olympics.

Curling
This game was made an endorsed game in the Winter Olympics in 1998. Prior to this it was a demonstration game, also referred to as Chess on ice due to its use of approach. There are 2 events, mens' & womens', although a failed bid was made to put in a diverse doubles category for the impending 2010 Games in Vancouver, Canada.

Bobsled/Bobsleigh
Popular and always draws a significant audience. It has been a part of the Winter Olympics since the opening. The 3 events are the 2-male, 2-woman and four-man races, and the 4-guy sport is typicall the most well-liked.

In general, the admiration for winning the biggest amount of gold medals in the Winter Games goes to Norway and then the USA. The Winter Olympics, while not as well-liked as the Summer Olympics has progressively expanded over the years to take over a substantial audience.
