Women Painters of the American West
1890 - 1945
Years ago, I attended an exhibition at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage located in the foothills of the San Fernando Valley, titled: "Independent Spirits - Women Painters of the American West, 1890-1945." It was a stunning exhibit of work by women mostly viewed in the shadow of Georgia O'Keefe. Included in the exhibit, O'Keefe, by comparison, was second rate in skill and talent.
As time permits, I will be adding online information about many of these artists and their wonderful work..

- Uhler was in a minority of artists who painted abstracts in the 1930's. Often, the subjects of her work breathe a common spiritual energy.
- Henrietta Shore
- Of Shore, photographer Edward Weston said, "When she paints a flower she IS that flower."
Ellen Burpee Farr
Farr was one of the earliest female artists to paint Western subjects. Helen Forbes
1891 - 1945
Helen Lundeberg
1908 - 1999
Lundeberg's work evokes a spiritual mood, a peaceful mood through a 'Helen Lundeberg palette' of subtle color nuances and her intuitive form.

- Interesting subject. I never took art classes or art appreciation in school so I'm now learning about the artists. Thanks for helping me with this project.
