Yes, Women can Game!
Ranked #25,456 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #520,875 overall
Female gamers are not a myth, and they are awesome!
I have been playing tabletop RPGs since I was nine years old (that is more than 20 years ago). I have many female friends who are avid gamers... And yet, there still persists a strange idea among some gaming geek subsets that women cannot (or will not, or should not, etc.) game!
I am sure that most of my sister gamers out there have experienced this firsthand, especially at conventions! If you are an experienced female gamer, if you are relatively new to gaming, or even if you have never gamed at all, I have some useful ideas for you from my many years of experience.
If you are a male gamer who welcomes female gamers into your group - you rock! If you are a male gamer who believes there are no female gamers, or who would really like to meet some - hey, this lens could be very helpful for you as well!

Some Things to Know About Female Gamers
(Look Beyond the Breasts!)
It seems that a percentage of men who game believe women are nothing more than sexual objects. In actuality, women bring a lot to gaming, and can make the game more enriching for the entire group! Here are some reasons why:
- Female gamers bring more depth to a game/campaign because it makes the character dynamic more realistic.
- Women often come up with ideas that the rest of the group might not have considered - and often, there is a way past a challenge that would not have otherwise been discovered.
- We are usually more likely to remember things like birthdays and anniversaries, which can be a great boon to the group.
- Having a more diverse group is enriching to everyone and helps to make the group more socially and culturally enlightened.
We are not the enemy.
Female gamers are human, too! Treat us with respect!
Show me a female gamer and, eighty percent of the time, you will be showing me a woman who has joined a game with trusted male friends only to have their characters turn on her and rape her character. This is extremely uncool. So many guys at conventions have come up to me in awe because they do not see many female gamers, and I get asked again and again "Why aren't there more like you?"You see, there is a stereotype about women who game just because they have a boyfriend or husband who games, and there is also a stereotype about wives and girlfriends who hate gaming on principle. The thing that many people don't seem to know is that many wives and girlfriends who hate gaming tried it once or twice and experienced character rape.
Now, consider: when you have spent hours developing a character, and you have just gotten that coveted item, and you are about to try out that new feat for the first time - and you fail and your character gets killed? You feel genuinely upset. You feel almost like this has really just happened to YOU. Imagine how a woman feels when she has put so much into making a character, and her character is raped.Especially since, as most gamers know, people describe what they are doing as "I do this to you" not "My [character name] does X to [other character]" it is very frightening and hurtful to go through.
Another problem women who are just getting into gaming can is animosity from the rules lawyers. For some reason, there is much less patience afforded a female gamer who has never seen a rulebook before than there is to a male gamer. Some people actually get hostile and nasty, and treat the female gamer as if she is stupid or insignificant. Try to remember the first time you picked up a game manual, guys! Sure, you were probably a kid, but you had to spend a little time getting to understand the concept. Don't be hostile to other people who are just starting out. You are the reason there are not more female gamers!

Now, when a female gamer is cohabitating with one of the male members of the group, she will likely be playing hostess as well. This is not a reason to take advantage of her! Many male gamers seem to have been raised in an environment where a woman picked up all of their messes and never asked them to take care of their own space. Try being polite to your hostess and not treating her as if she were your personal servant. Throw away your own garbage, and if you would like something, ask nicely. Don't demand.
Lastly on this subject, if a woman is joining your group, don't assume she won't want to get in on the adventure! Just because I have boobs, doesn't mean I won't make a character who can kick someone's ass! Keep that in mind.
The Do and Don't list for Women who game
- DO: Try to familiarize yourself with the game to be played - at least the concept/setting.
- DO: Try to bring your own supplies - dice, paper, writing utensil.
- DO: actively participate in the creation of your character
- Do:Create a character that you like and will enjoy playing.
- DO: Stick up for yourself if other members of the group are giving you trouble.
- DON'T: Pretend to be helpless or stupid to get the attention of male players. (They won't respect you!)
- DON'T: Make a character that the other members of the group tell you to make because it will suit them.
- DON'T: Put up with sexist remarks or "jokes" about rape.
- DON'T: Create a character based solely on what you think the male players will find attractive - often times, if you play a stripper, some of the others could end up seeing you that way.
- DON'T: Expect the other members of your group to buy your food/beer/candy! You want to be treated like an equal, not a pet.
- DON'T: Assume that all male gamers are assholes and jerks. There are plenty of civilized, intelligent, fun guys out there.

Women Can Run an RPG, too!
Women make excellent game masters!
That's right, everyone! Most women I know make wonderful game masters - because of the attention to detail, social situations, etc. Personally, I have written and run several campaigns and scenarios - both with a regular group and for conventions. It's great! When I was running the Amber Diceless RPG for my group, i put together "travel brochure" CDs for them - complete with pictures of every suite and room in Castle Amber, along with a map, descriptions, and basic material on important NPCs. I also had everything statted out ahead of time and was ready for whatever challenges my players threw my way! It was excellent fun!
Believe it or not, we women are pretty good at world building. In fact, if you think about it, with the way that many of us were raised, the girls had more opportunity to build up this skill. You see, playing with dolls? That's like role playing. Many of us used to build up entire complex worlds and social structures and situations with our dolls. We have experience setting up what is going to happen and a contingency for everything - because what if Sally down the street brought her doll over for some serious drama one day? We had to be prepared.
Not trying to stereotype here, but those of us who played with dolls make excellent game masters - so this is something that people should consider before gawking and saying "Why would a GIRL run a game?!?"

- I have not participated in gaming but I have seen some in action and women are important and worthwhile gamers so any guys who don't think so, you are not real gamers IMO.

- I found this after your lens about Aaron Rosenberg. This is just what we gals need to show guys in the gaming world that we're not a bunch of vapid little chippies! Thank you for this.

- Rock on 'lil Sister! Testitfy! Tell it like it be - dammit! I'm a guy (and yes people, that actually is my name) who's had a variety of women play in my games. Guys - do not look down on the women! Having them involved makes the game better! And if you can't handle female gamers then get out of the hobby ya weasley little bastards!! One of the most enjoyable games I played in was run by a woman - she took a non-traditional slant on the genre (urban fantasy) and it was a damn hoot.
Awright, nuff said. I'm out.
