At the start of this wood carving I had to try out my shiny new chisels. I soon found out that a rotary tool is much quicker, particularly when there are large amounts of wood to be removed. Remember the 1st rule of wood carving or wood cutting: You can always take some more off-but you can never put more back on! So, I mark the high areas off in pencil and carefully work around them. On your first wood carving you are learning the basics, you should experiment! Sure you want it to look nice, but you probably won't be taking it to the fair. Have fun, create! I carved this chess set out of oak and walnut. I took the wood from an old kitchen knife holder I found at a rummage sale for $.25 cents. I sold the set for $150.00. Nice profit. This was only the third wood carving project in my life. Often times, when you create a unique wood carving, people want to buy it from you.
