What's a Woods Lamp?

A Woods Lamp is a tool that is used by a dermatologist or skin care specialist that allows them to see your skin in another manner, showing things you may not see without the lamp.

Robert Williams Wood developed the Woods Lamp.

The Woods Lamp is a special black light, and it can highlight pigmentation problems and other things like bacterial problems.

Woods Lamp Colors

Woods Lamp Colors

When a dermatologist or skin care specialist(esthetician) looks through a woods lamp, different colors mean different things. Here are a list of colors and what they mean.

Woods Lamp Colors
White = thick cornea layer
White Spots = dead cells, and a random horny layer of skin
Blue/White = normal healthy skin
Purple = thin skin, lacking moisture
Light Violet = dehydrated skin
Brown = sun damage
Pink/orange = oiliness
Bright fluorescent = hydrated skin
yellow/orange = comedones

Remember, you can sometimes see things that aren't visible to the naked eye yet. It's an amazing thing to see your skin under a Woods Lamp. I was blown away by how much sun damage I had, that I can't see when I look into a mirror.

Looking Through a Woods Lamp

Tbe first time I looked through a Woods lamp was such an incredible experience. Suddenly, I was seeing things that I hadn't seen with my own eyes! When looking through the Wood's lamp, you must be in a completely dark room.

It can be confusing at first to learn to differentiate what color means what under the Woods Lamp, but once you get used to looking through one, it will become easier.

I think the biggest eye-opener for me, was seeing I had an entire face of freckles, top to bottom, that I can't see without it. That's sun damage, plain and simple. With the Woods Lamp, it becomes very obvious that just because we can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there!
