Facebook, Twitter, Blogging Introduction for the Rest of US!
I am 60 years old this year, and many like me are just starting to learn what the whole
internet has going for it. Maybe a few years ago it was just a choice to be buying
selling or connecting with others on the world super highway of information. But no
more! We, I believe, we are in this huge world adjustment to a new age. The change
has burst forth like a earthquake, where the earth adjusts its plates to survive planet
structure. Change is not always a smooth transition and can cause pain, or melt downs.
Like our economy, a change has to occur. We can not just sit by, we must move on
with the new ways. Of course I am talking to those of us born a while ago. Our children
are born into the computer age, and all that goes with it. Ipods, not vinyl records,
Newspapers are out and reading headlines on line is in, buying even their couches
online for the 20-30 year olds is the norm.
I have been attempting to learn as much as I can this whole past year. Why? Because I
am a artist and I want to sell my products I create online. I know this is the future. And,
although I have been selling my art for over 35 years, it is way different now.
In the past, I would rent booths, or put my things on consignment, or approach places to
sell my work. Personally I never liked doing that. It took away time to actually be
making things. But , that was how I approached things.
Now, I see this fantastic market place, Internet. Reaching thousands of people. Ah, But
the catch! Millions of people are also vying to be on here. How do you get noticed
when you are lost in the billions and billions of people from all over the world??
Yes, I know IF you have lots of money you can buy adds. I do not have that. Most do
not.
So, This is what I am learning. Twittering, squidooing, blogging, web sites, google
searches, facebook, etc etc etc.
This is not a page for the already in the know but for
those newbies who are just learning.
I will update this page as I learn. IF you are just starting out like me, you can follow
along. I will be sharing links to all sorts of things I found useful.
And PLEASE, if you are already one of the tekkie wise people doing these things
already, leave us a comment here with your notes of wisdom to help us catch up!!

Year End 2011 Update
Woa, the year is done already? My year flew by! I am doing way better now on my Etsy store than previous years. I am blogging on three blogs, twitter, Facebook and Facebook pages, have a team blog and a team Facebook site, flicker, squid (I have neglected but will improve this year). I have some new tutorials on Utube. Which I put on my "adapting today blog" that is one for DIY people. I have a blog for all handmade and handcrafted artists. I feature the best of the things I find on Etsy and the web there. Even with the major downturn in economy I and my husband have made it through without too much hardship. We have our home, pay our bills. thanks to selling online and be innovatiive.I only have one major thing to add to my list, and that is Pinterest! You see the button on the top here. It is like a wall in my home where I have different pin boards up. I label each board as I want too. This then becomes a awesome tool for collecting fav. recipes or a place to keep a visual of your favorite ideas for gift giving, home decor ideas, you name it you can organize it all there. The networking thing is, it is another link to and from my Etsy shop for buyers to find me! Make more friends and see some incredible things! Hope you check it out, and Happy 2012!!
February 2010 Update
Update on the $$$$
Good News! Last year is showing my first real PROFIT! Yah! The Art/Jewelry income is a NET of $3200.00 estimated right now. Final tax's still being done, but I am breaking over the hill. It took me 2 yrs to do it. I am happy to say the three blogs are doing well, Etsy Shop, Flicker, and twitter/facebook all play a part. Sept 14th 2009
New Sculpted Pendant
UPDATE:Lots of things are happening! The Etsy site, now has new tools to instantly connect with facebook, and twitter as well as other pages. If you sell you can tell your followers instantly what is just listed in your shop, or if you are a buyer and want to tell others what you found, it is as easy as one click!
Also,
Since joining Facebook, I have not only found some lost high school friends but a long lost DAUGHTER!! who would have thought! Have not heard from her since she was small. Plus, Facebook has some fun games that OLD people like me actually like to play, Farmtown, restaurant city, pet society are my only three. But, when you consider I NEVER have played games before this is something.
Nothing in that for making a living but it is fun.
I have actually grossed 2300.00 dollars this year on my art/and Jewelry, but most of that is from Kiosk sales in Las vegas, and my husband selling at shows. So far, my income on the internet is still not anywhere near where I want to be, in order to make a part time living. However, My photography is 100 percent better now. My blogging is greatly improved, and most important, I am Having GREAT fun!
June 14, 2009 UPDATE
Art work is by Prof. Artist Tirzah Bauer all rights reserved@
I have really been learning! AND my little drawing on Networking below is out of date. I have added so much more now! I promise to get that drawing updated soon!for now, let me say, this takes a lot of time, and it is fun! I love writing lots of articles, as squidoo now has a lot more of my stories here. And all this is doing is keeping me in touch with old friends and making many many more friends. We share what we learn, and in turn this helps us buy from each other when we need something. When I need a hand knitted cap I go to Yolonda and when Sue wants a recycled Re Created Choker she comes to me! Cool!
as for money from blogging here, Ihave made, drum roll............. this month....
$2.83 ;-) not getting rich yet!
Networking

I just started this site few months ago. It is a worldwide network of constant chatter.
Like a phone line open to all. You set up your account and start what they call following
others. They in return, if they find you interesting, will follow you back. When you follow
someone you will see all their comments for whatever 5 minute period you are logged in
or you can see all their comments by going to there profile page. They will NOT see
your comments unless they follow you.
You are given a small box with limited spaces
to leave comments. Now realize, all the world can see these comments. It will go out
on the "all" page for a few seconds. It stays in your profile page. You can direct
message someone and that is private. This is a open forum. Not a private email type
way of communicating to the world. Esp to those who follow you.
Right now I am up to about 300 followers. I am meeting some great contacts.
One lady, On Twitter, is where I learned to check out squidoo.
Some on my follow list, bought some of my art already! There are some social rules to abide by.
Kinda just common sense politeness.
1. Follow those who follow you unless they are someone that spams all the time, or if
they are just some company that is not at all interesting to you. I don't follow some
who I find questionable. Like some who have 20000 people they follow but only 3
follow them? I wonder what that is all about.
2. Don't be always trying to get people to buy your stuff. They can go to your link to see
your art, your business or whatever. However, It is my passion, my art, so I will
occasionally be really excited about something and mention it there. I also, will post if
I have updated a blog or Utube video that I think they may find interesting.
3. Share your tips and helpful insights, do not get into arguments over small things. The
goal is to connect with others of all walks of life and learn from each other.
This is my fav. networking site. But you don't stop there.

August 2011 Update:
Facebook is evolving. I not only have my regular "friend' page but added a business page. This is under the heading of "pages". On this site I keep all my new creation updates, sales, and business information. I am gathering a nice group of followers who like my art. This is where I offer secret discounts to those followers. I also have teams some private some public in facebook. I find facebook a great internet link to your blogs , store front and a great place to meet new friends and keep in touch with old friends.
Remember! Security is a must on the internet. Do not leave messages about when you are home or not, or give out private information you do not want the world to know! use it wisely, never say things you do not want printed to everyone or used against you later. Keep it uplifting, useful and productive.
_____________________________________________________
Another new thing I am learning. I just started on there, as I had tried myspace and
that was not working for me. My husband still has an account on myspace as it allows
musicians to have a clip of their work.
Facebook, is a room where you can again, register and have links to all your blogs ,
sites etc. But it is even better now as it has "pages" to actually link to the Etsy site or
your .com web address with photos of your products.
Facebook, quickly finds people you may already know too. I found some people I went
to school with!! WHO KNEW!!
They have fun things to waste time on, like adopting a animated pet, or you can help in
a good thig by joining causes, groups.
But for me it is for two reasons.
1.to network in that site so they can find my store
2.to keep in contact with family and friends
Networking
Sketch of what My current Networking Accounts Are

I have been Blogging now for three years.
I have at least four blogs. Why blog?
Depends on what you like. I blogged at first to
share my thoughts on art, faith, John's music and a blog on tips for saving money.
All to inform, and help others. Now I have definite goals for each blog.
One to showcase hand crafted products from around the world who sell on Etsy, My art blog.
One to help people get by in hard times. A do it yourself blog with tips, how too's etc , called "adapting in todays economy"
One blog is for my musician husband to showcase his resume, his videos, and bands he plays with. Johnny Salzano Blog
One blog is my walking in faith blog, a christian journey of what I learn as a follower of the ways of Jesus Christ.
Each blog has been a work in process. I have found I can add music, videos, links to
other sites, share favorite books I read, or movies I have seen.
I found free, yes FREE gorgeous back grounds available to put on my blogs and now they are
all dressed up gorgeous! I have again met new friends and we share links to
each others blogs.
Now, are you starting to see why all this important??
For every site you maintain, and upkeep you are driving traffic to to let others know you
better and thus traffic to your store, where you want to sell your products. I drew up a
rough draft of what my networking looks like visually. I have hand written out where I am so far. The arrows in black point to areas that are linked, the blank arrows or white ones point in areas that I need to link back too. Since I am a visual person, this helps me in my planning and future efforts of networking.
(photo above)
there are lots more reasons to use these tools and many many more tools coming on
board every week.
ETSY
My Favorite Place to Sell Hand Made.
This site is for artists and for those selling supplies or vintage items. I love this site.I started one year ago, and found it easy to use, maintain and I have even made sales on there! That is always a good thing!
I love Etsy for the all the things it has on there too. It has a great front page treasury
where twelve products from different artist are featured every day. It has tons of
information on helping us improve, and a community site to talk with others about anything. Even
the administration is always there to talk too. They have online craft nights, and so
much more.
I have gotten totally addicted to a thing they call "treasuries". I don't enjoy games, but
this was and is my fav. thing to do! Anyone registered on Etsy, buyer or seller can put
up a treasury. You choose 12 items from any ones shop but your own. You can save
these on the Etsy Poster Sketch. A temporary holding spot to rearrange your picks.
I love it for these reasons:
1. I love the creative aspect of picking themes, colors, textures for a real pleasing set of
products.
2. I love the fact you are promoting someone else's art! Maybe they are new with no
sales, or have things you just have to share with others.
3. It also can help people know YOU. The more they know you, the more likely you will
be getting traffic to your own store. You can also add a little link to some interesting
web sites in a tiny little area at the top of the site.
4.It is a great area to buy a gift for someone if you do not know what to get by going to
treasuries to see what the artists themselves are choosing.
5.I have found some great friendships on there too!
To learn how to make a treasury you can go to my blog listed below in links.
So in a nut shell, for me, this is my main site to sell my products. Now How to get
people to my store? After one year, I see that I must network to get more traffic. It
takes work, and time.
THIS IS WHY if YOU are trying to sell, you need to network.
Must Read Links! Or listen to:
- Handmadeology
- I learned a ton from this site on selling on the net, and how to sell on Etsy.
- Do You know what is a SEO? If not you NEED too!
- Click here and learn vital information to getting noticed on the web.
- What is Page Rank?
- This is the actual computations, math, hard core figure of it all, but in a nut shell to me, it means that if you link from a Hot spot on the internet you will get more notice from search engines than if you link with lower ranking or esp. from non relevant sites.
Interlinking, and how it all works to get your page on the top page ranking is what this page discusses in detail!
FLICKR
Your Own Site for lots of photos!

This site is for uploading, for free, tons of your photos. In return these pics can be
automatically linked to your web sites, blogs! I have already had one of my photos
chosen to represent Portland Oregon's Japanese Garden area! I was so excited.
I am told that major publishers and advertising companies now look on flicker to choose
photos they may need. With your permission and/ or pay of course!
You can use the site for photos of "how to do this or that" or it can be private for family
members, whatever you need.
Its the interlinking aspect that I love. This is the goal, to interlink for more traffic to my
works of art. For I would truly love to make my living on line. I love creating unique and
special things for people to buy. I love that something I made , in return make someone else
happy.
Update August 2011
Join lots of "groups". For my hand crafted sculpted buttons, I joined some ceramic groups, for my jewelry I join hand made jewelry groups with large following. This is helping my views and possible buyers as well. I upgraded to premium and pay 35.00 yr for unlimited photos. this keeps a nice vault of my fav photos, and a look of my artistic endeavors.
Update May, 2010.
increase traffic
and meet some great people! Many are more than ready to help out with advice and share ideas.
Our Etsy team has a site on Flicker too, and we attached it to our street team information on Etsy. More of those "arrows" for my
circle of networking!!
I have gotten one publisher from Portland Oregon that used one of my photos in their yearly tourist map!
That was a no pay but my name and link was in all those brochures!! More networking!
This is my small little office/studio
Working Space with Unlimited Potential

It may be small be we can all find some nook or cranny of our homes to work out of . Be creative, build up for storage. Keep it neat as you can. Which for most of us is a challenge.
CafePress & Imagekind
More places to make Money

Cafe Press is a site where you can register for free. They have all types of products available for you to put your designs on. It is all done by them, you just upload your designs and they produce the items and ship them out. You even set your percentage or markup. You can design a simple word set on t-shirts. Or upload a great photo and have it put on cups, computer mouse pads or calenders. If you get really into it, they have upgrade accounts for small monthly fees. They even have the tools to put your own music CD's on there. Your own produced Cds.
Now, Image kind is new to me. They are a site from Cafe Press. They offer the customized wall art. I am still learning about this site. Again it works like Cafe press in that you upload your art/photography and buyers can order their own frames, sizes etc.
Photo here is a sample of a cup with my design at Cafe Press
My daily routine
Up at 6:30, let the dogs out to run, spend some time in meditations and prayer.7:30 I am at the computer checking all the emails. I make sure everyone gets a reply on my business or networking partners first thing each morning. Next, I do my photographing. This can take until noon. I have made my own light box, (a MUST HAVE) and simple to make. My photos have really improved since the light box.
I go right into designing all afternoon, eat around 1pm. I usually have three designs I am working on, and one that is ready for assembly.
For inspiration I will head out to the beach to sit in my car and draw ideas, or just breath the fresh air and people watch. Go for a walk and take lots of photos. This always helps me, renew my idea vault! ;-)
My tips for keeping a good work-life balance from home
I spend one day a week in relaxing thought. I may go to the beach, or go on a long hike. I may just read a book, or watch a good movie. I also like charles stanley on tv or internet feed. TD Jakes is also one I watch for encouragement and direction.I do not force myself to create, it must come from deep passion. Passion to create a piece of art to passion about a subject. I cannot make this happen. It comes, like breath when it is time. If i start to feel overwhelmed, i will spend time "out" somewhere. Go for a coffee break with friends or walk bare foot on the sand.
Might even watch a great movie. I get inspired by movies as well as quiet time!
Update! Feb. 26th 2009
Original Art Work by Artist Tirzah Bauer @2008
I took my sketch ( the networking sketch listed above of networking) to a meeting of fellow women that all are wanting to learn all these new ways to merchandise and network on the web. We have some who are great at photos, some are great in one area of computers, etc. Together we are brain storming of what is working for us and what is not.It was brought up at the meeting , how many hours a day is this all going to take?
I told them currently I was working at home apx 10 hours a day, five/six days a week, but most is because I am learning.
I also noted that you can break this all down to just a few hours a day by marking on a calender different jobs to be done each day of the week.
For instance. To network with lots of blogs, squiddo lens, so on, each site must be updated at least once a day or so many times a week to keep interest to followers. To do this you need a schedule. Mondays squidoo lens updates on three lens, tues. blog number 3 and 4 etc.
I currently set a goal for me to produce and list one new item on etsy four times a week.
I currently make it a goal to tweet on twitter once in the am and one in the afternoon for about 10 minutes each time.
I also have goals for each blog, lens etc.
This way we are producing and saving time. Spreading it all out over a month.
UPDATE AUG 2011
Our group is still meeting once a week. Our ladies discuss our current art projects and we encourage one another. Life cannot be just on the internet. We need to get out and bounce ideas from other POSITIVE people to overcome all obstacles that may arise. We have formed a life long bond and have helped each other in personal ways as well. A def. goal -=== Get involved with a real time group that are aiming to sell online like you are!

"Social Too" A Great NEW TOOL
Networking SurveysThis site lets you connect with your facebook, Twitter and other accounts to put up surveys. Surveys for me would be like asking how many people buy jewelry in todays economy?
