Project Natal - the evolution of the console.
This is the first thing you see when you visit the Project Natal website on Microsoft.com. Investigating further you begin to see the future of console gaming; one in which you can interact with the 'console' world without using a controller, but simply by moving, or reaching or jumping or throwing etc.
Getting the picture yet? Well the Xbox 360 is, and it's via a unique and extraordinary piece of technology and software that the Xbox 360, via Project Natal is using a camera to sense your movements and allow you to interact with characters in a virtual world.
So far Microsoft are keeping quiet on price and a release date, but as soon as there is one, I will post it here!

What is Project Natal?
So what can Project Natal do that the Wii can't? Meet Milo...
Project Natal is Microsoft's answer to the Wii. It's essentially a system that detects body movement and applies this to video games; it's similar to the Wii, but requires no hand help controller.
So what's different about Project Natal? Well for one thing the range of motions you can do isn't restricted to the movements you can do with a controller; the camera sense your body and thus can sense the movement of the whole of your body, or multiple bodies for that matter!
Project Natal features a RGB camera, a multi-array microphone, a depth sensor and a highly customized computer processor that uses innovative software to track full body movement; not only does it track movement, but it interprets movement and performs actions based on these movements.
Project Natal uses advanced techniques to recognize voice, but more profoundly it can recognize moods - this is a step into the future.
However, some may say that this isn't particularly revolutionary, there are some children's game consoles that already have this capability. What is innovative is how Project Natal melds software and hardware to loosen the bounds of playing a video game and takes you into a whole new reality. Take a look at the video of Milo:

The XBOX360 was the first next generation console player. It features HD graphics and is a very powerful piece of hardware. Microsoft scored big with the Online side of the console business, and games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have helped to reinforce Microsoft's early domination of the online side of the business.
Microsoft lost a little ground when their chosen format for HD failed but this has not been a major setback. They have struggled a little against the technically challenged, but more family oriented Nintendo Wii.
**Rumor: if you search Amazon.com for Project Natal you will see a release date of November 1st, 2010 - this was brought to my attention by Austin Pritchard (see Guest Book) and seems to be the current buzz on the web! Microsoft have confirmed Project Natal will be out for the Holiday season in 2010 but not confirmed the November 1st date.**
So far there is no official release date for Project Natal. Some suspect it will be out before Christmas as it is already with developers and from the Demos looks pretty advanced, however if you search the web most people point to a late 2010 release date - September 14, 2010 is one date, as it is also the release date from Halo - Reach with is supposed to be 'Natal enabled'.
I'm hoping for a pre-Christmas launch, but feel that the earliest we will see it is June 2010, to coincide with Sony's launch of their new hardware.
(Project Natal being released to the public. (My Guess) is November 1, 2010)
The Latest Buzz about Project Natal.

Still no release date, but in a recent interview Bill Gates said that Project Natal would also work with the Home PC and Windows. This is interesting, especially as the PC begins to break into the living room - it opens up a whole new set of things that can be done with Natal - control the house, the media center etc.
Project Natal will be backwards compatible - thus any games that exist on the XBOX 360 could be updated to work with Project Natal - this is huge for XBOX 360 fans.
"The next step in interactive entertainment is to make the controller disappear ... With Project Natal, we'll see games that bring everyone together through technology that actually recognizes us" Stephen Spielberg

What does Wikipedia say?
Category: File - :Project Natal Camera.jpg|thumb|300px|The Project Natal sensor device
Project Natal(, ) is the code name for a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. Based on an add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands, or presented objects and images. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typically hardcore base.
Project Natal was first announced on June 1, 2009 at E3 2009. Microsoft said that over a thousand software development kits began shipping to game developers that same day. It is scheduled to be released during the fourth quarter of 2010 .
Pricing for Project Natal has not been announced. Project Natal will reportedly also serve as the basis for a "new" Xbox 360. Though it is rumored that the launch of Project Natal will be accompanied with the release of a new Xbox 360 console (as either a new retail configuration, a significant design revision, and/or a modest hardware upgrade), Microsoft has dismissed the reports in public, and has repeatedly emphasized that Project Natal will be fully compatible with all Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft indicates that it considers Project Natal to be a significant initiative, as fundamental to the Xbox brand as Xbox Live, and with a launch akin to that of a new Xbox console platform. Project Natal was even mistakenly referred to as a "new Xbox" by Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer at speech for the Executives' Club of Chicago. When asked if the introduction of Project Natal will extend the time before the next-generation console platform is launched (historically about 5 years between platforms), Microsoft corporate vice president Shane Kim reaffirmed that the company believes that the life cycle of the Xbox 360 will last through 2015 (10 years).

Things you might not now about Project Natal
Fact #1: "Project Natal' is the current name for the innovative new 'controller-less' way to control the XBOX 360.
Fact #2: 'Natal' is pronounced 'nuh-tall' - I thought it was natal as in pre-natal! DOH!
Fact #3: 'Project Natal' takes the 'controller' to a whole new level allowing for 360 degrees of control, using your body as the 'key' to the virtual world.
Fact #4: Project Natal allows you to kick, punch, headbutt, throw, touch, pass and interact with different items without any gadgets. You can even use your body as a shadow!
Fact #5: The name 'Project Natal' originates from a city (Natal) in Brazil - Alex Kipman who is a primary figure involved in the project is from Brazil. Also, Natal in Latin means 'to be born' and as this product opens up a whole new world of control then the name seems appropriate (perhaps I was right with my 'pre-natal' pronunciation after all!
Fact #6: Not only does 'Project Natal' track your body but it can also recognize face changes, and also hear changes in your voice - this allows for an even more deep and immersed link to the virtual world.
Fact #7: "Project Natal" recognizes you - not only is this an innovative way to increase security, and allow for quicker log-ons, it's also pretty darned cool!
Fact #8: "Project Natal" combines a RGB camera, multi-array microphone, depth sensor and also uses a custom processor running its own specialized software. To the lay person that means it's pretty cool - the innovation is spectacular, but the fact it has a separate processor also means that the XBOX 360 can still be used to the fullest to produce truly amazing games.
Fact #9: With the RGB camera, you get full face recognition. This really opens up a whole lot of implications, including more secure computers for the future; Microsoft have stated that they have a lot more to 'announce' but are keeping this under wraps for now - watch this space!
Fact #10: The technology behind the depth sensor includes an infrared projector and a CMOS sensor - Ok in layman's terms this means that 'Project Natal' can understand true '3-d' despite differing lighting conditions.

So? The Wii has being doing this for ages hasn't it?

I've been playing video games for over 20 years and it's always been a 'geek' thing to do. Nintendo began the process of making the video game a family pastime with the introduction of the Wii, and this console has become the bestseller both in the USA and the rest of the world.
It's innovative approach of using a motion sensor in the controller changed the way people interacted and played video games. Now you could seemingly roll a bowling ball, or swing a sword to hack away the latest monster; the Wii controller became a hundred different tools, from a fishing rod, to an assault rifle; it revolutionized the gaming industry and gave Microsoft a royal kick up the Keizer.
I just bought Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii and it is pretty fun to play and almost feel like you are playng a real game of golf - imagine what this will be like when you can actually use your own golf clubs on the XBOX 360 version.
Wii
Amazon Price: (as of 02/10/2010)![]()
The Wii was the first major console to feature motion controlled games; using a controller to interact with games boosted the sales of the Wii and made it one of the top selling consoles ever; while the graphics are not as good as the XBOX360 or the PS3, the Wii became popular because the game play was so good.
Wii MotionPlus
Amazon Price: $17.96 (as of 02/10/2010)![]()
Rather than join the band wagon with their own 'Natal' project, Nintendo continue to improve their existing motion sensoring technology. This neat little device fits on the standard Wii controller and adds an extra level of control (only to games designed for it!).
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Wii Motion Plus Bundle
Amazon Price: (as of 02/10/2010)![]()
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 is one of the first games to use the enhanced 'Wii MotionPlus'. It does seem to give a noticeable 'touch' especially when putting. The game overall is very good, not much different than previous versions, but definantely improved by inclusion of the new controller.
What about the Sony, what are they doing?

Sony are always close on the heals of Nintendo and Microsoft, so it's no surprise that they are introducing their own motion sensing device that also uses the PS3 eye. From the demonstrations I've seen so far it does seem impressive.
It looks very responsive and there's no doubt that it is as good as anything Microsoft or Nintendo has; however, where Microsoft really scores big in my book is in the use of the interaction that blurs the real and the virtual world. Sony and Nintendo have really missed the boat on this one, and potentially this could catapult the XBOX360 into orbit.
**UPDATE**
Sony will never go down without a fight - they have announced that their motion-capture peripheral, the PSEye will feature face recognition capabilities. So it looks like both major console manufacturers will have a similar product - who will get it to the market first?
PlayStation 3 80 GB
Amazon Price: (as of 02/10/2010)![]()
Sony introduced their next generation console a year after Microsoft introduced their XBOX360. While the two machines are very similar, both having HD graphic capabilities and an immense amount of power for a little box, the PS3 achieved a small advantage when the Blue Ray DVD became the industry standard for HD DVD; the PS3 has an inbuilt Blue Ray player that makes this a very cheap way of getting an exceptional console as well as a great HD DVD player.
PlayStation 3 Eye
Amazon Price: $32.82 (as of 02/10/2010)![]()
Playstation have announced improvements (including face recognition) to the PSEye that are going to heat up the battle.
A character that talks to me? That's not new!
Ahh but I had a program that did that on my PC ten years ago - I think he was called Dr Floyd. It kind of talked to me, although it didn't make sense at times? Isn't this just a glorified form of that program?
Well in a way yes, but this takes it to a whole new level. For one, Milo can sense your expressions and react to them. Secondly, the conversation and interaction with Milo is astonishingly real; in the video above, Milo pouts when he realizes you know about his homework problem. From what I have seen so far, the character doesn't simply read from a list of probable answers buy seems to interact with the main character. Just look at the way the character takes the picture from the woman.
What do you think this will do for the XBOX 360?
