This printer comes with 36 MB of RAM which can be increased up to 160 MB. It also features a 266 MHz processor. Printing speed can be as high as 25 pages every minute and the first page comes out in under 12 seconds. As with any printer, these specifications will vary depending upon the actual document, but it definitely produces at a fast rate.

It comes standard with one 500 sheet paper tray and one 100 sheet paper tray. There is also a feeder you can opt for that holds an additional 500 sheets. All of this enables you to wait longer before you have to get up to add paper. Feeder and trays can all handle letter-sized paper, legal paper, bond, light card stock and transparencies. The paper trays can also work with labels and envelopes.

By upgrading to the D or DN model of the Phaser 3450, you will be able to print two-sided documents automatically. This feature is available with bond and light card stock, as well as letter and legal sized paper. With the DN version of the printer you also get built-in Ethernet connectivity so setting the printer up for a workgroup is easy. Additional features with this model include the ability to monitor both printer and job status.

You can replace the toner cartridge easily and you have the option of one that is either standard or high output. With the standard toner cartridge you can print about 5,000 pages. The high output version will double that productivity, to around 10,000 total. By using the toner cartridge with higher output, you will also pay less for each page that is printed.

There are a variety of print quality modes which can also save you money and Xerox compatible toner. Choose between the standard mode of 600 dpi and the high quality mode of 1,200 dpi. Or, you can choose the toner saver mode which outputs at 300 dpi. This is a great option when you are testing or proofing documents and you know you are not ready for the final print.

The Phaser 3450 has a compact design, if not lightweight. You can move it fairly easily from one place to another if you need to do so. If you do not have the network ready model, this may end up being an added benefit.

The printer is probably not the best choice for large workgroups. The output, though fast, is not as fast as some other models. For workgroups that are smaller or for home use, it is a great way to get quality that competes with the printers that larger offices use for a more reasonable price.
