Are All Women Really At Risk To Spread A Yeast Infection To Their Partner?

As a rule women don't usually get a yeast infection from intercourse. However women with weakened immune systems either from cancer treatments, organ transplant anti-rejection medicines or HIV have a higher than average risk.

Yeast infections can be caused by other factors which predispose the body to developing an overgrowth of yeast leading to a yeast infection. Some of these factors include:
  • Taking antibiotics for infections

  • Pregnancy, menstrual cycles or birth control pills which can change the hormone levels

  • Diabetes which can encourage the yeast to overgrow

  • Feminine hygiene products such as deodorant sprays, douches, and wearing panty liners outside the days of your period

  • Use a condom for all intercourse if you or your partner have a yeast infection, especially if you have a weakened immune system. Remember condoms only work if they are used.

Thrush, yeast infection of the mouth can be spread with oral sex.

Whether your risk is high or not getting a yeast infection is no fun. In fact the itching and burning can really interfere with intercourse.

Other Conditions Which Can Mimic The Symptoms of Yeast Infection

Not all itching and burning is due to yeast infections. Bacteria can also cause an infection which creates itching and burning called bacterial vaginosis. Some women are also sensitive and have vaginal irritation, burning and even itching with condoms and some spermicides.

The spermicide N-9 (nonoxynol-9) is an irritant to many women and can even cause allergic reactions. Try changing condoms, spermicides and lubricants to see if the burning, irritation and itching decreases. If it doesn't you should promptly see your health care provider as the symptoms could be part of an infection which needs to be treated.
