Young Greylag Geese - Just a few of Fred's Friends
These Greylag geese are friends with Fred, the Egyptian Goose, and they live at a nearby river park. There are nine of them!
We watched some of them grow from little yellow puff balls, to these pretty birds!
George is a Girl!!!!
he is now a she..."Georgette"
For some reason we named one of the Greylags "George". We know him by his limp (he has a broken toe)A few weeks ago when the geese were getting "frisky", we figured it was mating season. Little did we know....
Last week, my husband and I were at the park feeding our friends. We were discussing how some of the geese's "fat pockets" on their belly weren't the same.
We just thought they were probably the females with eggs!
And then we noticed George.....his "fat pockets" were not the "normal" either, and we thought maybe he was a "Georgette".
End of that story!
Until today! George is "Georgette"!
I went to the park later than usual as I had not felt well earlier. Now I know why!
After I fed the geese and ducks, I hung out on the boardwalk while they did their "after dinner" bath and nap.
Eventually, they woke when George gave a "holler". Next thing you know, Plop, out came the egg! Right on the beach!
At first I wasn't sure which Goose it was, so I ran over to see, and sure enough...it was George!
One problem, they all left George and the Egg. Second problem, George left too!
So where is the egg?
In a pair of my winter gloves, wrapped in a blanket, in the office, with the heater on!
Tomorrow I go have a talk with "Georgette"!
The Goose Egg Adventure
continues
So I had a talk with "George". There is no way to get the egg to her nest....it's across the river! So, the only alternative.....we will keep her egg and attempt to hatch it!
We have a makeshift nest in the office, keeping it very warm and cozy. Turning it three times a day, and just loving the little (actually big) darling.
The Egg was "born" on March 10th, so it is only 4 days old. At the age of 28 days, we should have a little gosling!
I will keep you posted! More Photos soon!

Reflecting!
Even tho Fred has gone south for the winter, his friends are still here. These beautiful Canadian Geese were very co-operative this chilly day, in posing for me.
This warmer day had the ice and snow melting just perfectly for this photo. Enjoy!

More about the Greylag!
The Greylag Goose (also spelled Graylag in the United States), Anser anser, is a bird with a wide range in the Old World. It is the type species of the genus Anser.
It was in pre-Linnean times known as the Wild Goose ("Anser ferus"). This species is the ancestor of domesticated geese in Europe and North America. Flocks of feral birds derived from domesticated birds are widespread.
The Greylag Goose is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
I have the life!!!
This is one of the nine Greylag Geese that are still at the River Park in our town.We visit them and "Fred" almost every morning.
It's not like they need fed, but we take some bread down and have a blast.
Some even eat from our hands or shall I say "GRAB"!
This was taken in early October after the leaves started falling.
Babies!!!
These were the only two baby Greylag Geese we ever saw. They grew up so fast, but and now they are all "willing" subjects of "the crazy camera lady"!
Two little additions to the Goose's family
The babies just walked around eating, unaware that I was there! (Maybe they liked getting their picture taken!)
The adults were very, very cautious, and made sure I KNEW not to get too close!

More about Canadian Geese
The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a wild goose belonging to the genus Branta, which is native to Arctic and temperate regions of North America, having a black head and neck, white patches on the face, and a brownish-gray body. It is often called the Canadian Goose, but that name is not the ornithological standard, or the most common name.

Fred's latest Friends - Ralph & Alice
aka Mr & Mrs Muscovy
Recently this Muscovy Duck couple showed up!Now they are part of "Fred's Group" of friends!
She's a bit shy, so I had to hide behind a tree to get this shot.
I wonder what people think when they see "The Crazy Camera Lady"!
The Muscovy Duck Story
The Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata) is a large duck which is native to Mexico and Central and South America. A small wild population reaches into the United States in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. There also are feral breeding populations in North America in and around public parks in nearly every state of the USA and in the Canadian provinces; feral populations also exist in Europe. Although the Muscovy Duck is a tropical bird, it adapts to icy and snowy conditions down to ?12°C (10°F) and below without ill effects.Holderread (2001): p.17http://nis.gsmfc.org/nis_factsheet.php?toc_id=210
