The Zoom H2 Recorder is a great piece of any musician's kit. I was so pleased with my purchase that I've written this short Zoom H2 Review.
The Zoom H2 Handy Recorder measures 4.2 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches (a cigarette packet) and easily fits into a pocket. With stylish retro designed microphone grilles encasing two pairs of microphones it is one of the smallest high-quality mobile recorders available. The H2 comes with earbuds, 1/8 inch stereo to RCA cable, mic clip adapter, desktop tripod stand, wind screen, USB cable, AC adapter and a 512MB SD card.
The Zoom 2 Recorder itself includes separate microphone and line-input jacks, a headphone output, microphone gain control, volume control, USB jack and a power adapter port.

Zoom H2 Recording Modes
The Zoom Handy Recorder offers both left/right stereo recording and a perceived four-channel surround with a second pair of microphones on the rear of the device offering a wider response pattern. The four microphones allow the Zoom H2 Handy Recorder to selectively record from the front or rear of the recorder, to record a stereo mix using all four mics, or to record a four-channel mix using all the mics (recorded as two separate stereo WAV files). Recordings can be made in 16-bit/44kHz up to 24-bit/96kHz (WAV) or 64kbps up to 320 kbps (MP3). The device supports SD cards up to 16Gb although it can only record 2Gb at a time. This is equivalent to 23 hours of MP3 or 3 hours of WAV. Battery life is surprisingly good giving 4 hours of continuous use with a pair of standard AA batteries.
The Zoom H 2 Digital Recorder features settings for automatic microphone gain control, sound-activated recording, low-cut filter, track splitting, a two-second prerecording buffer, compression presets, an instrument tuner , A-B audio looping, and a metronome.
The analog stereo connector or USB port are great alternatives for recording musical instruments or live performances. The USB connection turns the Zoom H2 Handy Recorder into a microphone. This gives a high quality input for voiceovers or podcasts. The USB port also allows you to transfer files to your computer for post-editing. The adjustable slider for input gain works well with levels up to 105dB without much distortion.

Zoom H2 Recording Test
We tested the Zoom Handy Recorder by recording a few numbers from a school production of Oliver using various positionings. Placing the H2 on a mike stand center stage gave a rounded clear sound to the choir. Positioning it behind the piano gave a crisp sharp sound with no distortion. We also plugged the Zoom 2 Recorder through the guitar amplifier with positive results.
For similar quality sound and ease of use you would be hard pushed to find an alternative, especially with the Zoom 2 Recorder price tag. In my opinion the Zoom H2 Handy Recorder is excellent value and an ideal choice.
