Wait for the iPad!

craigmckay888 says:

Well, it all depends on what you want to use it for. Clearly the iPad has many more features than the Kindle, however for travelling and just for reading, the Kindle all the way... and it has a lower price tag. In any case, I entered a comp to win an ipad - give it a go if you like.

Lee says:

I've been itching for a notebook and a Kindle, but now I must rethink my desire for a new phone/book/computer toy. Maybe an iPad, or a non-apple device that I'm sure will pop up later this year? If I had to choose right now, I'd go for the iPad.

Now I want an iPad! But if anyone still wants to buy me a Kindle I'll take one : )

No way! Kindle is better!

Mahogany says:

It feels like the backlit display on the iPad may be a barrier for it overtaking the Kindle as people's main e-reader

Susan52 says:

I'm not a techie person, but a reader. I spend most of my time at home and have a computer. I don't need an iPad, no matter how gorgeous that color screen is. Kindle has no monthly fee, plus a simple Kindle 2 is only $259 while the iPad starts - starts - at $499. Like the big screen? Kindle DX is $489. I'll take an iPad if someone gives me one and pays that monthly fee, but in the meantime I'm very happy with my Kindle.

I now have been using my iPad for two days. It has gone through a full day workout with my kids (who are enthralled by it) and a full day of work as an itinerant professional in the public schools, using apps that I had purchased for my iPod Touch and using the Netflix app. It has been used as a remote desktop for work; a note taking device; a book reader; a word processing device; and a music player. The only thing it has not yet been used for is games. Movies look impressive on Netflix. As a remote desktop, it runs fairly zippy on a local network, but a tad slow over the Internet. All of my iPod Touch apps run fast, although half of them look somewhat granular in 2X mode. Pages runs really well and opens all of my templates. Someone had commented that it messes up formatting when transferring between files, although this has not been the case with me. Regarding weight, it is lighter than I thought. I can easily whip it out of my carrying case and jot a quick note in the hall. The wifi reception rivals my MacBook. I have yet to drain the battery to check battery life. Overall, it has performed impressively. The only negative thing right now is the fingerprints when the iPad is off. It can look really dirty and I find myself cleaning it often.

I watched the entire 1 1/2-hour iPad presentation online yesterday and, I'll admit, I panicked a bit when they said it starts at $499, but I found my head and got the rest of the story (monthly fee, extra for 3G). I don't think iPad will be a Kindle killer, just an alternative for those who have the need for something with more functions and have money to spend on those things. Great topic!
