Rummy games

Rummy is a group of skill-based card games. These card games are best played with two to four players. Playing Rummy is fun and is considered the worlds' third most popular game.

The objective of Rummy games is to be the first to dispose of all the cards in your hand. This is done by picking up and discarding cards, while forming the cards in your hand into melds.

The winner of a tournament is the first player to accumulate the highest amount of points, or the last player to stay in the game without being eliminated by exceeding the elimination target score. Scoring charts exist for each of the Rummy card games available.

Rummy History - Rummy is a family of games that share a similar structure. All these games include a similar game play pattern that consists of drawing and discarding a card during each turn. This is done in order to help players meld the cards in their hands into sets and runs. A set is a three or four cards meld of the same rank. A Run is a three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.

The origins of the Rummy games go over a couple of centuries back. There are several versions that outline the development and beginning of the Rummy games. Some of them trace the origins of the Rummy phenomena back to the late 19th century, at New York. Other versions trace the origins of the game to the Orient. The Chinese Mahjong game is based on the same element of drawing and discarding cards as well as many other Chinese card games that go back to the 18th century.

Another version attributes the origins of Rummy games to Spanish comminutes who immigrated west. The Spanish card game bearing the name of Conquian strikes a great resemblance to the Gin Rummy game and is considered to be the ancestor of all the modern Rummy games. Gin Rummy itself is said to be invented at New York during the first decade of 20th century. The common assumption regarding the origin of the name for Gin Rummy is concerned with the alcoholic drink. The Gin Rummy game was quickly adopted by the Hollywood elite during the 30s and become most popular ever since.

Among the Rummy games one can find the following:

kalooki (Kaluki, Kalookie), Gin Rummy, Rummy 500, Oklahoma Gin, Hollywood Gin, Shanghai Rummy, Michigan rummy, Liverpool Rummy, Carioca Rummy, Crazy Rummy, Progressive Rummy, Contract Rummy, Rummicube, Ultimate Rummy, Russian Rummy. Krazy Bee 15 Rummy, Hungarian Rummy, Rummy O, Continental Rummy, Conquian, Frustration rummy, 12-Step Rummy, Tripoley Rummy, Construction Rummy, Bonanza Rummy, Robbers' Rummy, Rumino, Rummy Omar, Dummy Rummy and many more.

Rummy - Basic Rules

Play Rummy for Money

The Rummy card games are played by 2-4 players. Each player is dealt a set number of cards.
The objective of the game is to be the first to dispose of all the cards in your hand, by melding them all and laying them down on the table.

The play itself consists of the following elements:
A turn begins by drawing a card from either the stock or discards pile and must end by discarding a card onto the discard pile.

There are two types of melds:

A set consists of 3 or more cards of the same rank:

 7H, 7D, 7CorQC, QD, QS, QH

A run consists of 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit:

 3C, 4C, 5Cor7H, 8H, 9H, 10H

This play structures enables a variety of cards to circulate around the table, helping players to complete their melds.

Although varied among the many games, all of the Rummy card games contain a certain scoring chart. The winner of a single ring game is the first player to dispose of all his cards.

The winner of a tournament is the first player to accumulate the highest amount of points, or the last player to stay in the game without being eliminated by exceeding the elimination target score.

The Play
Each player is dealt 10 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down on the table, forming the stock pile (face down) and one card is placed next to the stock to form the discard pile (face up).

At the beginning of his turn a player must draw a card either from the stock pile (cards face down) or from the discard pile (cards face up) and add it to his hand.

In case a player has formed any melds (a matched set or a run), he may also lay them down on the table face up.

If the player does not wish to lay down a meld, he discards one card, face up, onto the discard pile.

If the stock runs out, the discard pile is shuffled and placed face down to form a new stock. The card discarded by the player who drew the last card of the old stock is placed face up beside the new stock to start the new discard pile.

During his turn, a player may add one or more cards from his hand to any meld already shown on the table. Thus, if threes are showing, he may add the fourth three;
if Eight of Hearts9HTen of Hearts are showing, he may add Jack of Hearts or Jack of HeartsQueen of Hearts , Seven of Hearts or Six of HeartsSeven of Hearts .

There are a couple of ways to win Rummy: going out and going Rummy.

Going out - the first player to discard his last card (go out) wins.

Going Rummy - A player goes "Rummy" when he gets rid of all the cards in his hand at once, without previously having put down or laid off any melds or cards.

The following set of tips was composed to provide you with guidelines to help you acquire a general perception of the game's strategy. We advise you bear these tips in mind and apply them according to your discretion, considering the specific situation you are confronted with. Please note the tips are ordered in an arbitrary manner.

Drawing - Drawing the right cards when playing online Traditional Rummy is the number one skill to affect the outcome of the game the most. When drawing a card at the beginning of the game, it is advisable that you pick a card from the stock pile rather then the discard pile. This way, your online Rummy opponents will find it difficult to keep track of the cards in your hand. Keeping your hand a secret as long possible will be worth your while down the road. In addition, since the cards on top of the discard pile are cards that your online Rummy opponents do not need, when drawing a card from the stock pile, you might be preventing them from forming melds.

Discard - Discarding the right cards is not a matter to be taken lightly also. When throwing away cards your first priority is to get rid of cards that are of no use to you. Secondly, you want to throw away cards that are of no use to your online Rummy opponent. To do so, simply note which cards your opponents discard.

Pay Attention To - One of the keynotes in online Traditional Rummy is constant vigilance. Be alert to the cards your online Traditional Rummy opponents discard and pick. This gives you the benefit of knowing which cards their hands consist of.

Melding - Try to draw and discard cards in a manner that will provide you with a lot of opportunities to complete pairs into melds. For example: the unmelded cards in your hand are: Seven of Spades , Seven of Clubs , Eight of Clubs , Four of Hearts . Discarding the Four of Hearts will leave you with more opportunities to meld the rest of cards.

Going Rummy - You need to pay attention to your opponents' moves, the cards they are drawing and discarding. Make your decision to Go Rummy based on the information you can get during the first couple of turns.

Going down - If all players have already laid down melds at the "Meld Area", waiting to Go Rummy is too risky - go down as soon as you can.

Gin Rummy

The goal is to arrange as many of the cards in your hand as possible into runs or sets of cards:

Another objective is to reduce the total count of the unmatched cards in a player's hand (deadwood) to less than the count of his opponents.
There are three ways to score points toward winning a Gin ring game: ginning, knocking, and undercutting.

The Play
In a 2 player game each player is dealt 10 cards. In a 3-4 player game, each player is dealt 7 cards.
The remaining cards are placed face down on the table, forming the stock pile (face down) and one card is placed next to the stock to form the discard pile (face up).

A standard turn consists of two parts:
The Draw - A turn begins by drawing a card from the top of the discard pile (face up) or from the top of the stock pile (face down) and adding it to your hand.
The Discard - To complete your turn, one card must be discarded from your hand and placed on top of the discard pile face up.

If the stock runs out, the discard pile is shuffled and placed face down to form a new stock. The card discarded by the player who drew the last card of the old stock is placed face up beside the new stock to start the new discard pile.

Gin
A player who "Gins" disposes of all the cards in his hand at once, without any "deadwood" (unmatched cards).

Knock
Instead of going for Gin, a player can win a game by "Knocking". To do that, player's deadwood count must not exceed 10 points.

The other players may lay off cards only on the knocker's hand, and only on the original matched sets.

For example: The knocker has Seven of HeartsEight of HeartsNine of HeartsTen of Hearts and one opponent lays off Six of Hearts on it, the next opponent may not lay off the Five of Hearts.

Knocker has:First opponent lays off on it:Next opponent may not lay off on it:

The following set of tips was composed to provide you with guidelines to help you acquire a general perception of the game's strategy. We advise you bear these tips in mind and apply them according to your discretion, considering the specific situation you are confronted with. Please note the tips are ordered in an arbitrary manner.

Deck - in Gin Rummy there is a single deck of cards. This means that if a player picked up a card you need or discard it while you cannot pick it up, you will not be able to get it anytime soon. Therefore, in cases such as this one, you want to reconsider the melds in your hand and maybe pass on some options. This way, you will not be waiting for a card that might not show again.

Drawing - Drawing the right cards when playing online Gin Rummy is the number one skill to affect the outcome of the game the most.

When drawing a card at the beginning of the game, it is advisable that you pick a card from the stock pile rather then the discard pile. This way, your online Rummy opponents will find it difficult to keep track of the cards in your hand. Keeping your hand a secret as long as possible will be worth your while later on. In addition, since the cards on top of the discard pile are cards that your online Rummy opponents do not need, when drawing a card from the stock pile, you might be preventing them from forming melds.

Discard - Discarding the right cards is not a matter to be taken lightly also. When throwing away cards, your first priority is to get rid of cards that are of no use to you. Moreover, you want to throw away cards that are of no use to your online Rummy opponent. To do so, simply note which cards your opponents discard.

Most of the players tend to get rid of high-value cards in their hand to reduce their deadwood count. You might want to take advantage of that, forming melds of higher cards, having an easy time picking them up from the discard pile.

Pay Attention To - One of the keynotes in online Gin Rummy is constant vigilance. Be alert to the cards your online Gin Rummy opponents discard and pick. This gives you the benefit of knowing which cards their hands consist of.

High\Low Draws - Since a standard Gin Rummy game ends at about half way through the deck, it is best to draw high-value cards at the beginning of the game, in hopes to obtain the matching ones during the game. When approaching this point, you are advised to throw away the high-value cards assembling your deadwood, by either replacing them with low-value cards from the discard pile or taking your chances with the stock pile. *note, in case you suspect that your online Rummy opponent is about to knock or gin, you want to pick up a low-value from the discard pile and discard a high-value card, to reduce the total count of your deadwood.

Knock - During a tournament, it is best to catch your online Rummy opponents off guard and accumulate points by knocking, rather than waiting for a Gin. In ring games and tournaments alike, it is best to knock early during the game, to avoid the risk of undercut.

Having achieved a significant advantage over your opponents in previous rounds of a multi-round tournament, you do not want to take any risks. Calculate your moves in a manner that will help to maintain the current status quo.

Forming Melds - Another great Gin tip concerns the melds. When forming your melds you want to emphasis the four-card sets, rather than consecutive meld, and this way you are preventing your online Rummy opponents from laying off their deadwood attaching it to your meld.

Try to draw and discard cards in a manner that will provide you with a lot of opportunities to complete pairs into melds. For example: the unmelded cards in your hand are:
Seven of Spades , Seven of Clubs , Eight of Clubs , Four of Hearts . Discarding the Four of Hearts will leave you with more opportunities to meld the rest of the cards.

Ring Games - In ring games the players do not accumulate points. You might want to wait for a Gin in these games, for this move rewards you with more money.
