Is a 10 gallon fish tank really the best choice for beginners?

Lately, there has been a lot of arguing about the best size of fish tank and most of people suggest that you need to get a 10 gallon fish tank if you just started out. While others suggest that you should get a bigger fish tank I personally believe that you really need to take into consideration few really important things before you actually buy one.

Before we rush into details, let's take a look of some advantages and disadvantages together.

PROS

If you just started out with fish keeping hobby and you're a bit on a budget than a 10 gallon fish tank would be a perfect choice. Expect to pay around $20 - $30 depending on the type of material the fish tank is made of. Acrylic fish tanks cost more, but are also better quality!

The standard size of such fish tank is usually at 24"x12"x12" although it can vary for few inches in any direction. As you can see they don't require much space so they can fit almost in any room of your house or apartment.

Considering the size of a 10 gallon fish tank you can expect to weight around 120lbs once it is filled with water, gravel, rocks and other decorations.

Did you know that a 10 gallon fish tank can provide a perfectly thriving environment for up to 12 kinds of small fish?

Apart from a standard rectangle shape a 10 gallon fish tanks come in many different sizes and shapes such as cubes, hexagons, flat back hexagons, cylindrical or even bow front. Just remember that it's better to have a fish tank with the surface as bigger as possible for easier maintenance and aeration.

If you are scared of doing something wrong as a beginner you don't need to keep too many fish in your 10 gallon fish tank. You can just have few expensive or exotic fish which is way better than having schools of common fish in a large fish tank.

CONS

Contrary to what we just said about amount of fish, a smaller fish tank can't provide enough space if you really wish to have a lot of fish. Then it's obviously better to get a bigger tank.

It's almost the same if we think about decorations for your fish tank: a 10 gallon fish tank maybe won't give you enough freedom while decorating it.

Before deciding for a 10 gallon fish tank you should also know some things about Ammonia and Nitrite levels. In smaller tanks (10 gallons or less), where you are limited with space available for waste dispersion those levels could present a serious problem as they can build up very quickly.

Another problem with small fish tanks is that they are more easily affected by ambient temperature and its variations. Quick changes in temperature level could have a negative effect on health of your fish and in severe circumstances this could cause your fish to die - something you don't want to happen at all !

Ahh, now I'm even more confused....

Don't be! Bottom line is that a 10 gallon fish tank seems to be kind of a "breaking point". At this capacity or above, fish tanks seem to stabilize and cycle, and with proper care they can provide an environment for keeping your fish healthy. Well, at least as long as you keep up with the regular maintenance and maintain a reasonable population of fish. Yes, that's right: REASONABLE.

Interesting shapes of your new 10 gallon fish tank

A 10 gallon fish tank sounds like the perfect size to begin with. Not too small and not too big. One can always get a larger one as the hobby grows. :)

We had a tank of that size for 3 Map Turtles for a few months, but within a year we had upgraded to the largest plastic tub you could get, they just grew so fast.
