Shower or Bath? Which is Better?

You often hear the debate of which is greener a bath or a shower. Before I cast my vote, I'd like to mention that there are a lot of variables to this. Do you have a low-flow shower head? How much water do you use to take a bath?

Water Conservation in the Good Old Days

Which Is Better, Bath or Shower?

which uses more bath or shower?

When I think of conservation, I think of the way my grandparents lived. They survived the great depression and had amazing conservation skills. They often bathed in a few inches of water and then reused this water for plants, the garden, etc. In the summer time, I also reuse my greywater for the garden. In the winter, I often leave a little hot water in the bath tub to help humidify the dry air in the house.

I have to admit, I've always been partial to baths, but let's not lose focus. There is a quick and easy way to KNOW which is better, a bath or a shower:

The Test: Which is Better for YOU, Bath or Shower?

How do you conserve more water?

Place the plug in the drain before you begin showering, see if the tub fills up more from taking a shower than you would use to take a bath. It's largely dependent on your habits and the bottom line is that using less water is always better, bath or shower.

YOUR TURN!

Join the debate and take a side! Which do you think is better a bath or a shower?

Duh, a bath!

I much prefer baths, so - if it were legal in my area to use gray water! - I'd vote for baths. Plumbing codes need to be brought up to date. Otherwise, showers generally use less water... But, as you say, it depends on personal habits. Low-flow shower heads can help you use less.

Abigail says:

Our country has a real fresh water problem, in many areas the water shortage is critical. A low flush toilets will save 20 gallons of water per day, 7,000 gallons of water year for one person, 9000 gallons in the average home.

I'm able to conserve more water taking a bath and I enjoy them!

Showers are ALWAY better!

HSSchulte says:

Thanks for commenting. I've heard this theory. I think the key is that the water is soapy. Essentially, the same could be said of dish water since it is soapy water in a sink used for dishes.

Suze05 says:

Baths are nice to relax.. And I'm all for water conservation, but I don't take long showers anyway.. But baths are disgusting in terms of cleanliness! Take the dirtiest parts you own, submerge them in warm water, and stir...Body funk soup.. No thanks!
