Kids Love Bugs! Why not have a bug themed birthday party?

Kids are fascinated with bugs. It's so easy to make a bug themed birthday party for your kids. We had a bug birthday party when my son turned four, and it was a hit. I think we started a trend, since he attended several other bug parties that next year. Read on to find easy games and activities, fun party favors, and a great "bug mountain" cake. (Other cake ideas included too!)

Games to play at your bug party

  • Bug Toss: Draw a big flower on a piece of posterboard and cut the middle out of it. Mount it on cardboard. The kids throw bean bags or beanie baby bugs and try to get them into the flower.
  • Pin the spider on the web: Draw a large web on posterboard. Cut spiders from construction paper (or use large spider stickers). Kids wear a blindfold and try to pin the spiders on the web.
  • Bug Bowling: Use empty water bottles and lids. Cut simple large bugs from craft foam. Hot glue them onto the front of the water bottles. You can make them all the same (like all ants) or all different. Fill the water bottles 1/2 full so that they will stand. Line them up like bowling pins. The kids roll a ball to knock over the bug pins!
  • Bug hunt: You can give each kid a small container and a butterfly or bug net and set them loose to find bugs in the yard!
  • Bug Hunt 2: Indoor party? Get plastic bugs and hide them around the party room. The kids go on an indoor bug hunt.
  • Caterpillar crawl: Using 2 sleeping bags and 2 teams. Each kid gets in the sleeping bag and wiggles from the start line to the end line, then the next kid gets in and wiggles. Run this one like a relay race. Great fun!
  • Keep the Ladybug in the air: blow up one red balloon for each party guest. Draw black dots on the balloon w/ a marker. Give each child a balloon and have a contest to see who can keep their balloon in the air the longest.
  • A pinata! (There's a great one available below!)

Turn those party guests into little grasshoppers!

This makes a great photo to include with your thank-you cards

I used 2 pieces of cardboard taped together. I drew a simple grasshopper picture across the posterboard and cut out the face. As each child arrived at the party, I took his or her picture as a grasshopper. The kids loved this!
